Dundee United's Scottish League Cup misery continued with defeat by Falkirk in the season opening Group B meeting of champions.
After a fairly even first half, the hosts took control after midfielder Dylan Tait smashed in following a corner to give the League 1 winners the lead in the early stages of the second half.
Forward Ross MacIver headed home Falkirk's second to pile on the misery for Jim Goodwin, whose side failed to progress from the groups last term before going on to secure the Championship title and promotion back to the top flight.
In the other group game along the road in Larbert, League 2 winners Stenhousemuir thumped Highland League champions Buckie Thistle 4-0.
