  1. Villarreal hope for 12th time unlucky for Haalandpublished at 19:16 BST 21 October

Villarreal v Man City (20:00 BST)

A positive result for Villarreal tonight probably requires the Spanish side being able to keep Erling Haaland quiet.

The striker has scored in his last 11 consecutive matches.

"Hopefully it won't be a 12th game in a row [for Haaland]," said boss Marcelino. "If I say he is the best number nine in the world, I won't be saying anything somebody hasn't said before.

"We want to play against players like this. We would rather be playing them than sat at home. We want to live this atmosphere, but to do this we need to play against the best. It helps us grow. That's the excitement we want.

"For Haaland, we will try to make sure he receives the ball as little as possible – although he can score with hardly any touches. I hope the 12th game is the one where he won't be able to score."

    ...Erling Haaland's delight?

It's a picturesque setting above Estadio de la Ceramica tonight with Premier League side Manchester City in town for the Champions League.

You can see why Villarreal are nicknamed the Yellow Submarine, there's no other colour to be seen inside this delightful stadium.

Locals and travelling supporters were both enjoying themselves in the bars outside the ground in the build-up to this game.

City are on a run of eight games unbeaten in all competitions while Villarreal are yet to taste victory in Europe this season - it's going to be a tough ask for Marcelino's side, especially with the form that Haaland is in.

Mark: Love Simeone, real character & the game needs that. Isn’t it funny though, Atletico (& Juve also) make games awful to watch & it’s a defensive masterclass. Others do it & they’re anti-football.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he "looks up to" Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone before their teams meet in the Champions League - and he believes the Argentine would be a success if he wanted to work in England.

Simeone has been in charge of the La Liga side since December 2011 - approaching 14 years. That is a longer reign than any current Premier League boss.

Arteta is the second longest-serving manager working in the English top flight, having joined Arsenal in December 2019.

The Gunners boss was asked if Simeone's time in charge of the Spanish club was an inspiration to him.

"Well, obviously there is someone that I look up to and learn from him in many situations and what is for me outstanding is his passion," Arteta said before tonight's game.

"I don't know [him] personally but everything I heard about him is that he's so good at doing that. That's one of the reasons why you are able to sustain at that level."

  9. Man City's poor away formpublished at 19:03 BST 21 October

Villarreal v Man City (20:00 BST)

Villarreal are still looking for their first win in the Champions League this season but Manchester City's record away from home in Europe has been poor by their own standards.

They have not won a Champions League match away from home since 1 October last year against Slovan Bratislava.

Since then they have suffered away defeats by Sporting, Juventus, PSG and Real Madrid with their only away result this season a draw against Monaco.

A blow for Olympiacos just as they'd got the momentum.

Olympiacos are down to 10 men.

  11. Why did Olympiacos have goal ruled out and penalty given?published at 19:01 BST 21 October

    Barcelona 2-1 Olympiacos

Ah OK. We've had the proper explanation about what happened here and it makes sense.

So Daniel Podence was offside as he crossed for Ayoub El Kaabi to score, meaning the goal would have been disallowed.

Instead, however, VAR spotted a handball by Barcelona's Eric García inside the box before then, so went back to award a penalty.

    Hopefully I've explained that clearly.

  12. Help for Haalandpublished at 19:01 BST 21 October

Villarreal v Man City (20:00 BST)

Manchester City's 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League on Saturday saw Erling Haaland once again on the scoresheet.

The Norwegian scored twice in five second-half minutes to make it 14 goals in 10 appearances for Pep Guardiola's side.

But while we run out of things to say about the striker, Guardiola was quick to point out that more of his players need to start scoring if City are to achieve what they want to this season.

Haaland has scored 13 of their 17 league goals this season with Phil Foden, Matheus Nunes, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki each scoring one goal apiece.

"We need other players [to score]. Wingers, attacking midfielders," said Guardiola.

"They have to make a step up and score goals. We play to provide Erling with quality and passing but other players have to step up. At this level they have to demand themselves."

Nunes was the last player other than Haaland to score for City, against Burnley on 27 September.
