Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on the impact Jose Mourinho has had on his managerial career: "He is someone I hugely admire, having come up against him before in the Premier League. As a younger coach, I really admired the teams he built at Chelsea, in particular.

"He is definitely a visionary - someone that broke the mould in terms of how you manage and the different ways to do things, and then following his success through different clubs, leagues. Incredible, really, what he's achieved in his career.

"It's always a great opportunity for any club to go up against one of his teams. I'm looking forward to the challenge immensely and I think it's going to be a great game."

It was 8.25pm by the time Jose Mourinho finished up on Monday evening. The Benfica manager had just spent the best part of half an hour answering questions in both Portuguese and English ahead of tonight's game against Newcastle.

Yet Mourinho looked like he could have talked for another while longer in the media suite at St James' Park. It is hard to think of an opposition manager who has such an affection for another club without ever taking charge of them.

But that was the profound impact mentor Sir Bobby Robson left on his former assistant during their time together at Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.

Mourinho, a two-time winner of the competition, could not have been more complimentary about Newcastle.

He predicted Newcastle are "closer to bigger things". He spoke about how "happy" he was after opposite number Eddie Howe ended the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy last season. He even revealed he told his players that the atmosphere at St James' was "beautiful".

Arsenal have apologised to Atletico Madrid after a hot water failure at Emirates Stadium left the Spanish side heading to their hotel for showers following a training session.

Uefa rules allow visiting teams to train in the home stadium the night before Champions League matches.

Diego Simeone's side were training before the two sides meet tonight.

The Atletico Madrid staff alerted Arsenal that there was no hot water in their dressing room at 18:45 BST, with the Gunners realising there was a similar issue in the home dressing room too.

The team were due to finish training at 19:30 but finished 15 minutes early and decided to travel back to their team hotel instead.

Spanish newspaper Marca, external, external reported the Atletico squad were 'angry' with the situation.

Arsenal apologised to the Atletico Madrid staff for the inconvenience caused, with the issue eventually resolved at 19:25.

In the aftermath of Arsenal's 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday, there was a picture doing the rounds on social media.

It was not of the goal or of any of the celebrations. Instead, it was an image of defender William Saliba watching Atletico Madrid, the Gunners' opponents in the Champions League, on the team bus leaving Craven Cottage.

There was a quick turnaround between the games with just two days of preparation before Diego Simeone brought his Atletico side to north London.

The Gunners have only conceded three goals this season, keeping eight clean sheets and boss Mikel Arteta says he was happy to see the dedication from members of his squad.

"Very pleased because I didn't encourage it - that came from them. Arteta said.

"We know this will be a tough one, so the earlier we think about it the better. I love that initiative from the players."

Just like that, Barcelona are 2-0 up.

They've not had many chances but they've certainly made the most of the limited ones they have had as Fermin Lopez gets his second.

It is 17-year-old Dro Fernandez with the assist, passing to Lopez just outside the box and forward is ice cool as he avoids a couple of tackles before firing in.

Manchester City arrived in Spain on Monday evening for their Champions League tie against Villarreal and Rodri tagged along with the travelling party.

The midfielder will miss tonight's game because of a hamstring injury and is also expected to be out of Sunday's Premier League match at Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old misses out on featuring against his former club but has been honoured by the Yellows by being inducted into their hall of fame.

Rodri unveiled a ceramic plaque of himself outside the ground alongside other club legends including Santi Cazorla and Bruno Soriano.

Rodri said: “I feel honoured to have received this special recognition from my former club.

"I enjoyed my time with Villarreal immensely. I was a young boy, still learning and still developing and they helped me start on a good path which has led to many, many proud moments in my career so far.

“I would like to thank the club for this inclusion on their Walk of Stars. I really appreciate and it means a lot to me and my family.”

    Quote Message

Even when I was the manager of other English clubs, I've never hidden how dear Newcastle is to me because of the influence of a legendary person at this club. I worked with Sir Bobby [Robson] for two, four, six years and there was not a single day he did not show his passion for Newcastle, the city, the region and the football club, the pride and the passion he felt for it. He loved this club, he gave everything to this club.

Whats all the fuss about: No idea why people are getting so worked up about these group stages. It’s essentially a money maker for the organisers and clubs, similar to the Club World Cup. The real tournament starts in the knockout phase.
