Match Facts
Sporting CP and Club Brugge will meet for the fourth time in European competition – the Portuguese side went unbeaten over two legs against them in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup first round in 1967-68 (W1 D1), but lost their most recent meeting in the UEFA Champions League last season (1-2 in December 2024).
Sporting CP were beaten 2-1 by Club Brugge in their UEFA Champions League meeting last term, despite taking a third minute lead through Geny Catamo. This remains the second earliest they have taken the lead in a match and then gone on to lose in the competition, after a 4-1 defeat to Marseille in October 2022 (scored in the first minute).
The last 12 games between Portuguese and Belgian sides in the UEFA Champions League have produced 10 victories for the Portuguese (L2), although the most recent one was a victory for Club Brugge against Sporting CP in December 2024 (2-1).
Club Brugge have lost each of their last three away games in the UEFA Champions League (0-3 v Aston Villa, 1-2 v Atalanta and 0-4 v Bayern Munich), and have only had a longer run in the competition on one previous occasion, losing five in a row between November 2005 and October 2018.
With victories in their first two home matches of this UEFA Champions League campaign (4-1 v Kairat and 2-1 v Marseille), Sporting CP will be looking to win their first three at home in a single edition for the first time.
Club Brugge have gone nine games without a clean sheet in the UEFA Champions League (21 goals conceded), and only once previously have conceded in 10+ consecutive matches in the competition (a run of 12 between November 2005 and October 2018).
The ball has been in play for 63.9% of Club Brugge’s total match time in the UEFA Champions League this season, which was the highest percentage by any side across the opening four matchdays. Sporting CP, meanwhile, also ranked within the top 10 sides through their first four matches (59.4% - 10th).
As a team, Sporting CP have completed 48 dribbles in four games in the UEFA Champions League this season; more than any other side across the first four matchdays. Half of those came in a single match against Kairat (24), which was also the most by a team in any game through the first four rounds.
Club Brugge’s Nordin Jackers led all goalkeepers for line-breaking passes across the first four matchdays in the UEFA Champions League this season (34). Indeed, he also made the most breaking the opposition’s attacking line (27) of any goalkeeper.
Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inácio has made 36 line-breaking passes from the defensive half in the UEFA Champions League this season; the joint-most by any player through the opening four matchdays (also 36 by Josko Gvardiol).
