Have a hunch Brentford will do alright, Frank's disciple seems to be doing okay. Early on, granted. But I think they'll stay up.

  6. 'Glad to get the three points'published at 17:17 British Summer Time

    FT: Bournemouth 1-0 Wolves

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth midfielder Marcus Tavernier: "We knew after last week that we needed to get our first win and it had to be today. It was against a tough opposition but I feel like we played with the intensity we did in the second half against Liverpool. You could see that at times. We should have shut the game out a bit quicker and scored another goal but credit to Wolves but glad to get the three points."

On his goal: "That's Ant [Semenyo] working his magic. Last week he dribbled with the ball and didn't pass to me, I didn't think he was going to do the same thing again today. He got me the ball and it took a lucky deflection but they all count."

On Wolves having a man sent off: "It doesn't get any easier playing against 10 men, even though it looks like that. It just makes everyone focus to get that clean sheet."

On facing Tottenham next: "The intensity and the way we play everyone knows how we play. Hopefully we can take that, play our best and get something positive from the game."

Burnley are going to make it difficult for teams at Turf Moor.

They got away with it a bit in the first half, but in the second half they really deserved it.

Josh Cullen was at the heart of everything and Burnley had to use all of Kyle Walkers' experience with his pace when Sunderland were pushing them on the break.

  8. 'I've missed the Premier League'published at 17:15 British Summer Time

    FT: Brentford 1-0 Aston Villa

    Brentford

Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm delighted with the result. I thought the lads gave everything. It's a great day for us and I'm delighted for Dango [Ouattara] to get a goal on his debut.

"It's nice to be back. I've missed the Premier League the last few years. It's the best league in the world. I enjoyed every minute of it out there.

"I know it's not going to be easy but there are so many good people at the club. With performances like that and the passion we have shown for each other, we can move in the right direction."

Andy: Might want to calm down Uzair @ 17:05 I’m not saying they are all destined for the drop, but Sunderland beat a struggling West Ham, Burnley beat a promoted team today, and Leeds won because of a penalty called scandalous in some corners… A good start for them, but far too soon to draw any real conclusions.

The win should have been more comfortable for Bournemouth. They went ahead early through Tavernier and then Semenyo missed a couple of great chances.

Wolves went down to 10 men, so it was always going to be an uphill battle. They huffed and puffed in the second half but Bournemouth managed to see it out - it's a huge three points for Andoni Iraola.

  12. Arsenal v Leeds United: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 17:11 British Summer Time

    Jordan Butler
    BBC Sport journalist

The only two teams to register 1-0 wins on the opening Premier League weekend meet at the Emirates.

“One nil to the Arsenal” was the chant in the away end at Old Trafford last Sunday. All six of Arsenal’s Premier League wins at Manchester United have been by that scoreline, but they were far from their best and allowed 22 shots on their goal – the most they’ve faced in a Premier League clash against United since that famous 8-2 defeat 14 years ago.

Viktor Gyokeres’ hotly anticipated debut became a mere footnote in the match and he had 22 touches and lasted an hour before he was withdrawn. He also failed to have a shot for the first time since April 2023, ending a run of 69 consecutive league appearances in which he registered at least one attempt at goal.

Much more will be expected of the 27-year-old Swede in the coming months and he will be required to step things up immediately after Kai Havertz suffered a knee injury this week.

Arsenal drew a whopping 14 matches in last season’s top flight – a number only surpassed by Everton with 15 and a total which ultimately cost them the title. Six of those league draws came at home, with points dropped against the likes of Brentford and Crystal Palace. However, they did beat all three newly promoted sides at the Emirates in 2024-25 and the same will be expected this season.

The Gunners are flat-track bullies when it comes to hosting newly promoted sides and they are unbeaten in 42 Premier League home matches against such teams, winning 37 and drawing five. Avoid defeat here and they will equal Chelsea’s longstanding Premier League record.

Unbeaten home runs vs promoted opposition in the Premier League

Leeds United travel south seeking to win their opening two Premier League fixtures for the first time since 2002-03 under Terry Venables.

Last season it took until October for one of the promoted trio to register a win. This season – for just the third time – two from three did so on the opening weekend.

Daniel Farke’s side became the first Championship title-holders to take maximum points from their opening top-flight game for 17 years on Monday with a narrow victory over Everton.

The Toffees were toothless, but Farke’s men deserve credit as they limited their opponents to 14 touches in touches in the box and one shot on target – the fewest allowed by any side in the opening round.

  13. 'Tottenham were outstanding'published at 17:11 British Summer Time

    FT: Man City 0-2 Tottenham

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Tottenham were outstanding. There was so many good things about their game.

Really tough and aggressive in midfield and doing what they had to do when the chances came along.

Man City weren't allowed the same zip because of how aggressive Tottenham were.

The midfield three of Tottenham were outstanding - João Palhinha was at the heart of everything.

  14. 'Brentford playing for their manager'published at 17:10 British Summer Time

    FT: Brentford 1-0 Aston Villa

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on Final Score

There has been a lot of noise around the G-Tech and Keith Andrews. It was a game of two halves, they were good in the first and then the second they had to play it a bit ugly and they saw out the win.

What it showed me is that there is an inner belief and they are playing for their manager. People tipped them for relegation but I think they will be just fine.

  15. 'Big three points for Burnley'published at 17:09 British Summer Time

    FT: Burnley 2-0 Sunderland

    Charlie Adam
Former Scotland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Big three points from Burnley in terms of getting the first win on the board and it's whether they can build on that.

I believe that one of the three will stay up this season.

I thought Josh Cullen was excellent for them.

It's always nice to win your home games.

  17. 'Massive result for Keith Andrews'published at 17:07 British Summer Time

    FT: Brentford 1-0 Aston Villa

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Final Score

That is a massive result for Keith Andrews. Poor last week, first home game of the season this week and something to prove. They have lost their best two players, well almost in the case of Wissa.

They defended brilliantly and Outarra took his goal well. Three big points.

  18. Postpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time

    FT: Bournemouth 1-0 Wolves

    Chris Wise
BBC Final Score reporter at Vitality Stadium

Given the tempo of this game, I’m not sure how we’ve only ended up with a one goal game.

That’s actually Bournemouth’s first ever home Premier League win over Wolves.

Vitor Pereira’s side still without a point or a goal in this new season.

Quite a lot of eyes now will be on that Everton home game next week for Wolves.

I think Eberechi Eze is a brilliant signing for Arsenal and knowing that he rejected Tottenham will go down well with the fans. They are getting one hell of a player.

Arsenal are getting a player in his absolute prime. You look at them in those forward areas, Martinelli, Madueke, Saka, Trossard, Nwaneri, and they are adding Eze. That is the depth you need to compete across all competitions.
