Oxford United boss Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford:

“At the start of the game we didn’t play with enough composure, I thought we were a little bit wasteful with our possession and didn’t manage to break them down as much we’d like.

"Frustrating in some ways. They're a good team and we know how they set up. In some ways, they're just as comfortable in those deep, defensive positions.

"I thought we were very good. The red card kind of plays into their hands in some ways in terms of blocking the game up and making it difficult.

"When you go 1-0 up, you expect to control the rest of the game. We give one silly free-kick away which gives them one chance and you only need once chance to score and they hung on for 1-1."

Leeds had captains all across the pitch today. Goalscorers will take due credit but those who didn’t score - Tanaka, Firpo, Rothwell, Ampudu, Rodon were sublime. There was as much desire to keep a clean sheet as there was to score.

Bristol City boss Liam Manning said his players can be "proud" of earning a point with nine men at Oxford United.

"The second half epitomises what you want culturally," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I think the lads had desire to run, to compete, to stick together and defend the box like they did.

"To respond to going a goal behind like we did, I thought there were so many positives to take from it. The lads should be proud of coming away with something today."

On the Joe Williams red card for a foul on Will Vaulks after 31 minutes: "He's out of control a little bit, he's off the ground. There's minimal contact. A few years ago, it's not being given, now possibly.

"I think the ref had an extremely poor performance today. Purely for the fact of the inconsistency of the decisions.

"He was inconsistent for both sides which creates the frustration."

Further doom and despair for Derby. The supporters that remained until the end, and many didn’t bother, venting at manager Paul Warne as he trudged down the tunnel at full-time.

Seven league defeats in a row for the first time since the run that completed their historic, 11-point Premier League season of 2007/08. Fears of relegation loom again.

How they must envy Sheffield United at the other end of the table. The day after County sold defender Eiran Cashin to Brighton, the Blades were able to field four January signings.

Two of them produced the game’s only moment of quality, Tom Cannon setting up Ben Brereton Diaz for the goal.

West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio WM: "We found a way to lose a game we should never have lost. It is quite remarkable really. It's amazing we lost that game. We had such control. They didn't threaten that much and I couldn't see how they were going to score.

"But it was a really, really controversial decision. It was never a penalty kick, from someone who played the game for 20 years and has managed for 20 years.

"Referees don't have to come out and talk to people after games. No doubt he would defend the decision and say it was right but I would find difficult to understand how he would condone it.

"The ref's decision to give a pen I cannot understand. Even if it does hit his hand, he couldn't do anything about it. The boy is two yards away and smashes it straight at him."

Plymouth Argyle boss Miron Muslic told BBC Radio Devon: "I am very proud and very happy for the lads.

"Not being able to win a game in three months does something to your mind, to your heart, to your legs. Everything becomes heavy. More difficult.

"I said last week against Sunderland was proof of life and this was another step forward.

"Not only in terms of the new players, I spoke about having to change the mentality in the locker room. You can't change 15 players.

"It's about signing the right players. I was very pleased with our defensive structure. We need to stabilise the team and I think we did that."

We've criticised all these 0-0s, but that was a real scrap.

I used to play in games like this 20 years ago, I've not seen a team put that amount of crosses in all season like Portsmouth.

We could have lost it, we could have won it but in the end, a draw was probably fair.

They put us under pressure, Portsmouth, but when you talk about winning leagues and winning promotion, against a team battling relegation, you've got to win these games and get the job done.

    • Leeds fans: Where does that rank in terms of performances at Elland Road? And how good was Dan James today?
    • Sheffield United fans: How important is big Ben Brereton-Diaz going to be down the final straight?
    • Burnley fans: It's an obvious observation to make but yet another goalless draw as those above you win, is it justifiable reason for concern?
    • Plymouth supporters: If you're still here, is a fresh wave of optimism engulfing Home Park?
    • Derby fans: Come on, let it all out... how worried are you, and how much faith do you still have in Paul Warne?

Leeds were so ruthless and that's what I was impressed by. They were looking for more goals and determined to keep the clean sheet.

    It was really strong performance.

The supporters played their part and the team thrive off that. It was a mixture of both.

It's good to get goals from all over the pitch. They all wanted to score and they were celebrating together.

Championship bottom 10 after the games on February 1

The scrap for relegation tightened up with Plymouth's lunchtime win over West Brom as they move within four points of safety.

The bottom six are now separated by just six points.

Luton picked up just their second point in eight games away to Sheffield Wednesday to move closer to Derby and Hull who fell to home defeats to Sheffield United and Stoke, respectively.

The Potters were the other big winners in the lower reaches as their comeback victory puts a little daylight between themselves and the drop zone.

But it was sobering day for South Wales as Cardiff's emphatic defeat at Leeds was followed by Swansea's home defeat to Coventry.

Since Christmas, I've been grasping hold of the odd performance and I'm sure Paul (Warne) has, where there has been a bit of a glimmer of hope.

We've had backs against the walls in games where we've gone one down recently and we've seen a real rallying cry from the players and they've given everything. It just didn't feel like it was there today.

Apart from a couple of occasions, Sheffield United were fairly comfortable. It wasn't like a siege mentality going from us.

Would you take a look at that goal difference, Leeds United fans? A convincing 7-0 win over Cardiff means Daniel Farke's side remain two points ahead of Sheffield United, who won 1-0 at Derby.

But the Whites' goal difference is now 14 better than Burnley's +27 as the Clarets were held to a goalless draw at Portsmouth.

West Bromwich Albion missed the chance to strengthen their grip on the top six earlier today as they lost 2-1 at Plymouth, while Norwich moved to within two points of the play-offs with a 1-0 win over Watford.

Bristol City battled to a valuable point at Oxford with nine men and Sheffield Wednesday stay 10th after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Luton.

It was an all-round team performance of the highest magnitude.

It's a statement result to the rest of the league.

Everyone will be going what a result that is for Leeds.

It was a 7-0 performance of being ruthless of the highest order.

Daniel Farke and the supporters will be delighted but they won't be popping the champagne just yet with tough game at Coventry on Wednesday.

About as convincing as it gets.

Leeds United have absolutely torn Cardiff City to pieces at Elland Road this afternoon.

Dan James was magical with two assists and a goal, Junior Firpo accurate as he laid on three, Joel Piroe clinical with two - and not to mention the goals from Brenden Aaronson, Manor Solomon and Willy Gnonto.

Emphatic from Daniel Farke's side who have laid down a real marker and given their goal difference a nice boost indeed.

Cardiff can't get back to Wales quick enough. You feel their survival in the Championship will not hinge on days like today but it's still a big knock to the confidence as they lose for the first time in eight games.

But it is a thoroughly miserable seventh league defeat in a row for Derby and Paul Warne.

GOAL: Leeds 7-0 Cardiffpublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

    Joel Piroe (90+5 mins)

Crikey! Joel Piroe has made it SEVEN for Leeds right at the end.

The forward drives forward and slots one home to absolutely rub salt into the Cardiff wounds.

The Whites are rubber-stamping their position at the top of the Championship in some style.
