Stoke City had not won away in the league in almost three months

New Stoke City boss Mark Robins claimed his first league victory as Potters boss at the fifth attempt as his side came back from being an early goal down to win.

Hull's new Belgian signing Eliot Matazo, signed last week from Monaco scored just six minutes into his Tigers debut.

But Ali Al Hamadi, who swerved fellow suitors West Bromwich Albion to arrive at Stoke the same day, levelled on 43 minutes.

Then on-loan Brighton midfielder Andrew Moran, on as a 60th-minute substitute, struck a 74th-minute winner when he controlled smartly to divert home a misdirected shot from fellow loan man Lewis Koumas.

Stoke's first league win since 29 December lifts Robins' men a place to 18th in the Championship table, five points clear of the bottom three and three points above the Tigers, who drop to 21st - still with the worst home record in the Championship.

Stoke's away form makes similarly grim reading - having previously picked up only 10 points out of a possible 42 on the road this season.

And Robins may have feared the worst when Lynden Gooch was outmuscled by Sean McLoughlin at the back post from a well-worked Hull short corner taken by Matazo. The ball then skidded across the six-yard box, for Matazo to run in and score from a tight angle.

Matazo really ought to have scored a second after 20 minutes when a hopeful long ball was superbly controlled by Joao Pedro, who cut it back but the new man scuffed his effort into keeper Viktor Johansson's chest.

And instead Stoke equalised just before the break when Tatsuki Seko sent over a rather ambitious lofted cross from the right that required a routine clearance, but Cody Drameh got the ball tangled under his left boot, gifting Al-Hamadi an

The Liverpool-bred Iraq international also played a significant role in a glorious early second-half chance for Stoke when he ghosted past Matty Jacobs before squaring the ball to Josh Wilson-Esbrand, only for Drameh to atone for his earlier mistake with a brilliant goal-line clearance.

Moran then replaced Al-Hamadi on the hour, and scored with his first meaningful moment of the game when Koumas shot at the back post but the ball fizzed into the feet of Moran, who briskly controlled to score.

Hull, who brought on new loan signing Louie Barry for his debut just before the hour, could have equalised at the death when Johansson smothered McLoughlin's one-on-one effort just outside the six-yard box - but Robins' men held firm.

Who's next?

Stoke now host Cardiff City in the FA Cup fourth round next Saturday before returning to league action the following Wednesday night at Bristol City.

Hull, without a game next weekend, are back in action the same night (12 February) at Burnley.

'This gives us a bit of belief - Robins

Hull City head coach Ruben Selles told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I understand that fans will want to see more victories at home. It's frustrating for everyone. We are all in it together and if we were not getting the result we want I, and the team, need to do things better.

"We controlled for 42 minutes of the game and created enough situations to score a second goal. But that's the Championship - when you are in these situations you have to be ruthless and, unfortunately, we conceded a goal from one isolated action.

"Their two goals were disappointing so we need to speak to individuals and as a team about how we go through these moments.

"The second half was not as good as the first but we were still creating situations. "We did a lot of good things more than enough to get a result."

Stoke City boss Mark Robins told BBC Radio Stoke:

"We are in a situation where we've not won enough games so it's a bit of a confidence thing. This result gives us a bit of belief and showed what we can do.

"If you put that sort of effort in, the quality will come through. We have young players trying to find their way through but they've got the skill and got the ability.

"We didn't get going until they scored, which was too late. There is still loads to do and so much to get into but we are getting there.

"We passed the ball pretty well and defended pretty well when we needed to but I'm still looking for more."
