Asked about the prospect of facing Ruben Amorim's Manchester United in his post-match press conference, he said this: "We will face them two times in the Premier League and maybe the FA Cup.

"In the Champions League it is not possible."

The outstanding Nicolas Kuhn inspired Celtic as they came from behind against Germany's RB Leipzig to earn an exhilarating third Champions League victory in a row at an exuberant Celtic Park.

Following their six-goal League Cup thrashing of Aberdeen on Saturday, and a hard-fought point away to Atalanta in the previous matchday, hopes were high for this game despite Leipzig's status as top seeds.

Celtic lived up to expectations with a blistering start, but Leipzig – who are still searching for their first point in the competition – punctured their positivity with Christoph Baumgartner’s neat nod from a corner.

Celtic had lost in 27 of the 28 previous Champions League games in which they had gone behind, but they picked themselves up here.

Continuing his exceptional start to the season – 17 goal contributions in 15 games before this – Kuhn cut in from the right and curled an audacious strike in off a post.

The stadium was still bouncing when German winger Kuhn stroked in from just outside the six-yard box after Daizen Maeda’s fresh air swipe allowed Greg Taylor's cut back to reach him just before the break.

Brendan Rodgers’ side maintained their high levels after the break and were rewarded when the brilliant Reo Hatate lashed in a third and ensured Celtic's second victory of this campaign.

Incoming Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim saved one of his greatest Sporting victories for his last home game to condemn Manchester City to a third successive defeat for the first time since April 2018.

It was City’s heaviest defeat since September 2020 and only the second time in his trophy-ladened spell at City that Pep Guardiola has been beaten in three consecutive games in a single season.

To cap a thoroughly depressing night for City, star striker Erling Haaland blasted a second-half penalty against the crossbar.

Sporting's own Scandanavian superstar Viktor Gyokeres - formerly of Coventry City - did much of the damage with a superb hat-trick.

The Swede drove home a 38th-minute leveller to Phil Foden’s early opener and then kept his cool after the break to beat Ederson twice from the spot.

The first of those penalties came in a disastrous start to the second half for City as they went behind seconds after the restart as Maximiliano Araujo raced onto a through ball and fired into the corner.

Sporting regulars in the media tribune said the victory was the greatest single game of Amorim’s reign, which has one more match to go, at Braga on Sunday.

The fear in this part of Lisbon must be that momentum from seven successive victories in all competitions cannot be maintained. Not that it tempered the celebrations at the final whistle.

Xabi Alonso's emotional return to Anfield ended in heavy defeat with Luis Diaz scoring a hat-trick as Liverpool maintained their flawless Champions League record by overpowering Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso remains a hugely popular figure at Liverpool after winning the Champions League in 2005 and was heavily touted to succeed Jurgen Klopp this summer until he decided to stay in Germany.

Arne Slot was eventually appointed and his outstanding start continued as Liverpool once again recovered from a sluggish first half to overwhelm Leverkusen, who had controlled them comfortably before the break.

Luis Diaz broke the deadlock after 61 minutes with a deft lofted finish over keeper Lukas Hradecky from Curtis Jones' pass, Cody Gakpo adding the second two minutes later from Mohamed Salah's cross - the goal initially ruled out for offside before being given after a Video Assistant Referee review.

Diaz was on target again with a close-range finish seven minutes from time to give the scoreline an emphatic appearance that did not seem likely in the low-key, uneventful first period.

And there was still time for the Colombian to smash home a rebound to take home the matchball after substitute Darwin Nunez had his effort blocked.

The win means Liverpool stay at the top of the new Champions League format standings with a maximum 12 points from four games.

After the game, Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo said to Amazon Prime Sport: "I think it's a good result against a very good team, I don't know if it’s the best [result] but it’s a good one.

"They played a very good game, but we kept going, trying ,creating chances, defending well. The first goal won us the game."

On Curtis Jones' pass that set Luis Diaz up for Liverpool's opening goal: "Fantastic pass from Curt and an amazing amazon ginfihs by Lucho [Luis Diaz], it was very important to open the game, after that it was a little bit more easy."

On the noise generated by the Anfield crowd: "They did that last weekend as well, the part they play is very big, every game they are there for us, we try to show them what we've got."

  12. 'I want to fight and not give up. I like this challenge'published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Sporting 4-1 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: “Cannot say much when you lose 4-1. Congratulations to Sporting Lisbon for the game.

“We had a fantastic first half, now we are struggling to score. We create and concede when the opponents don’t do much.

“The first half was really good, we scored a goal, but every pass, the simple things we missed sometimes.

“It can happen. After the third and the fourth we have to avoid it. Emotionally we were not stable enough and in this competition you have to be stable. At 2-1, many things can happen. We have to be emotionally more stable.

“It was a very good action for them. They made a good moment, they were fast and scored."

Defensive changes a problem? “Maybe. I don’t know. When you play lots of games you cannot play the same line up and same back four. We have had these problems for day one but it is what it is.

"Now is the difficult moment in terms of results but I want to be here. I want to fight and not give up, I like this challenge as a manager I have ahead of me. Who wants to follow us will be there.

“It is football. Maybe what we lived in the past is the exception. Sometimes you can lose. We were in the position where they punished us for the few they do and we struggled for the chances we had.

“The first half was almost enough to finish the game and then we were losing 3-1."

Liverpool's hat-trick hero Luis Diaz speaking to Amazon Prime: "The most important thing is the three points in this edition of the Champions League so we can keep progressing in the competition.

"Things have gone so well with the new manager, it wasn't easy for him to come in and fill Jurgen Klopp's shoes. Hopefully, we'll have something to show for it at the end of the season.

"We have top-quality players all over the pitch and I really enjoyed playing in that position today. I'm just happy to be on the pitch.

"I need to go and find that ball now because I need to keep it somewhere special at home."

  14. 'Liverpool have a very good balance' - Alonsopublished at 22:33 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Liverpool 4-0 Bayer Leverkusen

    Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso speaking to Amazon Prime: "I think that in the first half, we were pretty good. Second half, they were not so good and we weren't able to keep the ball well or find the positions. Our intensity in the defence got lower and they weren't squeezing much. The second goal was hard for us. The result is painful, the performance is more painful.

"It can happen that you come to Anfield and lose. To lose 4-0 is not nice. They are a top, top team and they punished us. It was a pity we couldn't hold 1-0 for 15 to 20 minutes. They did it against Brighton, they did it against us.

"We were ready to come here and give our best. We did okay for some part but the game changed in 20 minutes. Liverpool are strong. We lacked some power and consistency. Defeat, accept it, congratulate Liverpool and move on.

"I will try to separate the game and the pain from the result to the feelings of coming back and having love. I'm really thankful to have that reception.

"It's early to tell but I can see that Liverpool have a very good balance, a very complete team. They work the 11 players and they have the power to hold a clean sheet which is important in the Champions League. In the Premier League, let's see. It's early to tell but it's looking good."

Lukas Lammie: It is unfortunate that some Liverpool fans can't see Klopp set all of this up so that Arne could run into this job rather than walk and fade slowly back to the dark days! Klopp may not have won as many trophies as he deserved, but my goodness he set us up for life!

    • Luis Diaz is only the second Colombian player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League, after Faustino Asprilla for Newcastle vs Barcelona in September 1997
    • Mohamed Salah has provided four assists in the Champions League this season – more than any other player. It’s also his joint-highest number of assists in a single Champions League campaign after just four games (also four in 2017/18 in 13 matches).
    • Liverpool have won all four of their Champions League games under Arne Slot. It’s only the second time that they have won all four opening games in a single season (also in 2021-22 under Jürgen Klopp when they won their first seven).
  17. 'One game at a time' - Slotpublished at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Liverpool 4-0 Bayer Leverkusen

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot speaking to Amazon Prime: "I don't know if it was that much to do with intensity but we took more risk. They overloaded the midfield a lot and we adjusted a half-tine and took the risk to play one v one all over. We had better chances in the first half and they weren't a goal threat.

"As much as this time, how good they are in Europe, sometimes a strong target man is better than someone a bit faster. Curtis Jones did an incredible pass and then you have someone with the pace of Lucho to finish it off. The pass was as good as the goal in my opinion.

"You don't look ahead as a manager at the next three months. You're always one game at a time. We've got Aston Villa on Saturday, another tough game."

On Van Dijk: "Virgil sometimes gets criticised about not stepping into the midfield. Now I would advise these people to watch this game today because he was constantly on the front foot."

On Kelleher future: "That's in the future. Jaros is doing well and we have another goalkeeper as well. What I like about today is we only needed him five minutes from the end. We're hard to play through but sometimes they play through the press. I like the work rate of the players."

Charlie: 2 things, firstly, United fans, please don’t get carried away. Amorim is going to be under enough pressure as it is. Secondly, those undermining Klopp’s time at Liverpool need to stop. He was phenomenal, and he’s the reason Slot has a great squad at his disposal.

Can’t believe Amorim is gonna destroy his legacy by going to Utd. Could have stayed at a decent club and competed he’ll be another one out of a Man Utd job in two seasons mark my words!

The system for City means we are exposed at the back as soon as we lose the ball. Been happening all season. Haven't replaced the tenacity and goals of Alvarez and players like Mahrez in the past.
