Both the Real Madrid and AC Milan teams are wearing white T-shirts reading "We are all Valencia" in Spanish and Italian respectively, in honour of the hundreds of people killed in floods in Spain in recent days.

There are also banners around the Bernabeu paying tribute to the victims of the flood, and as at grounds all around Europe this week there will be a minute of silence.

During the period of silence, a giant flag of the city of Valencia was held aloft in the grandstands.

The arrogance of a Liverpool fan. Adam, Slot inherited Klopp's squad which was among the top four teams in the last four years. As the previous post read, they have ridden their luck a few times this season, which they're perfectly entitled to do, but to suggest you're going to win 2 trophies and the league after 10 games is why Liverpool fans have such a bad rap. No one can stand the pure entitlement because you were good in the 70s and 80s, and four years in the 2020's. (Where you still didn't actually win that many trophies)

There is a lot of worry on Merseyside that Trent Alexander-Arnold may be the one to leave, but I think he will stay. There have been discussions about him wanting to be Liverpool captain in the future and for a boyhood fan that means a lot.

He will be wanting to lift a Premier League, Champions League, a cup, lots of trophies as Liverpool captain. There is talk about Real Madrid but it is just that at the moment.

  9. 'Leverkusen's issue is that they flew too high last season'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2024

Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen (20:00 GMT)

    Archie Rhind-Tutt
German football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

The issue Bayer Leverkusen have had this season is that they flew too high last season. There is winning the Bundesliga and then there is becoming the first ever club to go an entire Bundesliga season unbeaten.

Given the fact that they were not and are not Bayern Munich, and the way that they did it, it equates to the most impressive Bundesliga season of all time. The players broke the 'Neverkusen' curse and now they are having to adapt to being champions and playing in the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah scored a goal at Arsenal, scored the winner against Brighton and he has contributed to over 65% of Liverpool's goals this season. He has underlined his importance to this football club.

One of the first songs you will hear around here tonight will be about Mohamed Salah because the fans adore him. From a marketing and commercial point of view he knows his value to the club because he has done those negotiations before.

On the possibility of Liverpool fans singing his name, Xabi Alonso said: "We will see, I will tell you after the game how I feel.

"There will be a moment for everything, but the main thing is not me. It's the players, how we deal with the emotions you have in this stadium."

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher said: "I think the fans will give him a great reception, but the focus is on getting a result and making sure he doesn't go home happy."

This game has all the ingredients to be great. Liverpool have had a great start in the Champions League as have Bayer Leverkusen. The German side are on seven points, Liverpool on nine points.

There is a possibility that one of the sides could seal qualification for the next stage tonight should they win the game.

  15. Amorim staying insidepublished at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2024

Sporting v Man City (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter in Lisbon

Ruben Amorim is clearly not one of those managers who does the warm-up, not even to stare down the opposition like Jurgen Klopp used to.

Amorim is staying well clear of the pitch and leaving it to his coaches, some of whom are expected to make the move to Manchester United with him.

I often wonder what managers do in this bit. They basically have half an hour to think of something inspiring to say.

I think Arne Slot will want to win tonight and get qualification done. The issue is that a lot of the players looked tired at the weekend, the first half against Brighton wasn't good at all.

Liverpool also have another huge game at the weekend against Aston Villa at home, so I think we may see rotation but I'm not sure quite how much.

The sounds of fireworks exploding can be heard all around Anfield on this very cold, misty Bonfire night at Anfield as Liverpool prepare to play Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen (20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is excited by the prospect of playing in a big Champions League game at Anfield in front of fans for the first time.

The 25-year-old's only previous home start in the competition was against Ajax in December 2020, at a time when matches were being played with no supporters in attendance because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a news conference to preview Tuesday's fixture against German champions Bayer Leverkusen, the Republic of Ireland international said: "It will be quite cool. I've experienced quite a few nights of the Champions League. I didn't play, but the atmosphere is always electric on European nights.

"It will be a special moment and one I'm looking forward to for sure."

Arne Slot's side are two points clear at the top of the Premier League after 10 games and, alongside Aston Villa, are one of just two teams to have taken maximum points from their first three games in the league stage of the Champions League.

Asked how well-equipped he feels the Reds are to challenge for both trophies this season, Kelleher - who is currently deputising in goal for the injured Alisson - added: "We came close last year and just fell off in the Premier League towards the end. Those experiences are big for us.

"We've kept mostly the same squad as last season so we have those experiences and it's a bit more fire in the belly as well. The Champions League is one of the biggest competitions. We have always done well in this competition, so the motivation is there to do well in both."
