Summary

  1. Raheem Sterling misses out for Englandpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 21 May

    BBC Sport

It is not really a surprise as he has not featured recently but Raheem Sterling will not be part of the England squad for the Euros when it is unveiled later.

Sterling has 82 England caps and was part of the squad for the last five major tournaments.

He is still only 29, so has time to come back but suspect he needs to be a regular in a more consistent Chelsea side for that to happen given the competition for places.

  2. Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones INpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 21 May

Big news from Liverpool where two of their players, Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones, are expected to be announced in the England squad later today.

Both players are uncapped at senior level.

Centre-back Quansah, 21, has never previously been called up to the senior England squad. He has four caps at under-21 level, and started the Reds' final four Premier League matches.

Midfielder Jones, 23, made 23 league appearances for Jurgen Klopp's team.

Peter, Abingdon: Hi Phil. Do you think Southgate will pick the two best performing English centre halves in this last season? On any statistical basis they are Tarkowski and Branthwaite. Or will he just roll out the same old names?

Sorry Peter. Think they have been a top-class pairing for Everton this season, as the statistics show, and I think Branthwaite will be an England regular in future, but I’d put money on John Stones and Harry Maguire starting for England in Germany if they are both fit.

What’s their season been like?: Made 33 club apparences for Everton in the Premier League this season but has been constantly linked with a move away from the Merseyside club due to his talent.

Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite will also be in the selection announced at 14.00 BST.

The 21-year-old is uncapped at senior level, but made 35 Premier League appearances in 2023-24 for the Toffees as they avoided relegation despite a points deduction.

@Richw1677 on “X”: I assume Chilwell will start at left-back but his drop off this season has been alarming. Is that a game time issue or something else, do you think?

First of all, Rich, I’m not sure Chilwell will start at left-back. If Luke Shaw is not ready, which seems likely, I can see Kieran Trippier starting there but again, like Chilwell and Shaw there is a major injury issue there as well. This position is emerging as a real problem. This is why Liverpool’s Joe Gomez might find his way into contention.

I do think Chilwell’s loss of form is down to so many injury absences. He just hasn’t been able to get himself going and certainly did not do himself justice in the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

What’s their season been like?: Playing time has been reduced by injuries but has recently seen a return to the pitch. When fit, Chilwell offers a threat going forwards and defensive reliability, as well as experience.

  8. Sterling out of England squadpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 21 May
    Breaking

Some more breaking news to bring you about the provisional England squad for Euro 2024, which will be announced this afternoon.

We understand that Raheem Sterling will not be selected.

Sterling has earned 82 senior international caps, but has not played for England since the 2022 World Cup. His last international appearance was as a sub in the 2-1 quarter-final defeat to France in Qatar.

  9. Will Trippier be England's left-back?published at 11:31 British Summer Time 21 May

    Henry Winter
Football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

You imagine Gareth Southgate will try get them [Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw] into this training squad and assess their fitness, but they will not be sharp enough by the Euros.

I am pretty convinced that Kieran Trippier, who has played so well for England at right-back, has played 10/11 times for England at left -back where he could start there at 33.

It is not ideal but Southgate may go for experience there.

  10. Colwill to be in England squadpublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 21 May

Jake, Loughborough: Hi Phil. Do you feel England’s tag as favourites is a tad ambiguous considering our potential frailties? Left-back could be a big question mark? Where do you stand with Adam Wharton?

Morning, Jake. No I think England should be among the favourites simply because of the array of talent available, especially in the attacking positions, where they possess world class. I do share your concerns, and have stated them often, about central defence. I would prefer a better option to Harry Maguire and left-back is also a headache because of Luke Shaw’s injury problems.

Adam Wharton is an outstanding young player, a full England international of the future, but I think this Euro 2024 has come just too early for him.

I would take a punt on Eze, we need that player who can change a game and go past people, the longer the competition goes on the tighter the margins get. The Palace players will be on a high after the end to the season and no doubt would bring additional quality. The team needs to be set up to allow Foden at 10.

  15. Grealish and Rashford's statistical strugglespublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 21 May

Marcus Rashford and Jack GrealishImage source, Getty Images

Last season's stats aren't great reading for Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford.

Manchester City forward Grealish managed three goals and one assist in 20 Premier League appearance. Manchester United's Rashford struck seven goals and two assists in 33 games.

It means the pair have a league goal contribution every 251 and 253 minutes respectively.

That's way off Cole Palmer's goal or assist every 80 minutes!

Rashford definitely should not be in the squad. He's behind Saka, Foden, Palmer, Gordon and Bowen in the wide areas, and behind Kane, Watkins and Toney up front. Rather use that extra spot on a position we are lacking, like CM or in defence than bring in another attacking option when we will probably only play three of the forwards mentioned.

    Dean

We should be testing the waters with Olise, if France don't want him. Eze, Wharton, Barkley, Gordon and Kilman should all be in with a shot. No place for Rashford, Henderson or Dunk.

Cole Palmer's stats are something else.

He struck 22 goals and 11 assists in 34 Premier League matches last season.

That means the Chelsea star was involved in a goal every 80 minutes in the league. He also averaged 0.6 expected goals (xG) per 90 minutes according to data analyst Opta.

Paul Mitchell: Phil, do you think it is now virtually impossible for Gareth to leave Cole Palmer out of the England squad?

Yes, I do Paul. There is some very intense competition in those areas as we know but Cole Palmer has just been outstanding and may well have edged ahead of the likes of Jack Grealish and Anthony Gordon – although Gordon has got a real chance too.

Would you pick Marcus Rashford ahead of him on form this season? I wouldn’t.

Mike: It's quite disrespectful to think Kieran McKenna won't want to have this Premier League Season he has earned with the players - other clubs & fans can admire but should keep hands off and mouths shut. It will also be a good idea to see how is management copes with the PL and how he can adapt before trying to poach him.

In recent tournaments gone by Henderson has offered leadership and experience when it has been in short supply. However, the majority of England’s squad now has vast experience on the highest stage. Henderson’s main assets are no longer in requirement by England.

  20. 'Southgate likes players who have never let him down'published at 10:51 British Summer Time 21 May

    Henry Winter
Football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate is loyal and likes players who have never let him down - like a Jordan Henderson.

Henderson is a fantastic role model on and off the pitch, he is a leader and part of that group that Southgate turned to.

Even if he is not starting I think he would be good around the squad.
