Leif Davis at left back for the Euros, and no I’m not a Ipswich fan! Quality player and this time next season will be a regular in the England team. but Southgate will not look outside the Premier League unfortunately, he’ll get too much stick. As a Blackburn fan I’ve been going on about Adam Wharton for nearly two years now, he is the best player to ever come out of the Blackburn academy.

Thanks for all your messages so far, and keep them coming in!

Genuine question, is there an England fan out there who wouldn't have Eberechi Eze in the squad?

Good morning! As a Crystal Palace fan I can’t see past Eze and Mitchell being brought into the squad. Both have been quality this season, particularly since Glasner has been in.

    Alex in Salisbury

Not a Palace fan but you have to select Eze and Wharton for England based on their current form. I would even select Tyrick Mitchell who is their main left back. Also, Dier should be starting alongside Stones based on his correct form and the fact that he is left footed. Definitely, wouldn't have Rashford or Henderson in the team.

  6. More National League talks planned with Premier League this weekpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 21 May

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The National League raised a few eyebrows when they seemed to be cosying up to the Premier League around the appointment of a Football Regulator.

It then emerged an agreement was in place for a new competition, which would involve 16 National League clubs and Premier League Under-21 sides, partly to help cover the loss of revenue from FA Cup replays being scrapped.

But getting the new tournament signed off has not been as smooth as it had been envisaged.

Some National League clubs weren't too impressed and wanted alterations.

I understand more talks are planned between the National League and Premier League later this week to try and resolve the remaining problems.

Unfortunately, England's defensive issues will be our downfall at the Euro's. Just not got the quality in that department. You could argue we have the strongest midfield/attack in the competition, however I'm not sure it will be enough to overcome our defensive frailties.

Gareth Southgate has drawn up plans for Kieran Trippier to start Euro 2024 as a left-back for England, reports the Sun.

Trippier plays at right-back for Newcastle but may switch sides because of an injury crisis in defence.

Paul has a slight point about the lack of 'current' Premier League English left-backs. So let's look to next season's left-backs. Leif Davis. The most assists in the championship this season. Three promotions from Championship to Premiership. And an all-round amazing season for him at Ipswich.

  12. Still no 24-25 EFL Cup dates confirmedpublished at 07:34 British Summer Time 21 May

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

There is one game left of the Football League season, Sunday's Championship play-off final between Leeds and Southampton.

We know when the 24-25 league fixtures will be released; 09:00 BST on 26 June.

However, as yet there are no dates confirmed for the EFL Cup.

That is because they currently involve clashes with next season's expanded European competition.

Next season for instance, the third round, when the teams involved in European competition come in, will be in the same midweek as the opening 'first phase' games in the new Europa League, which would create a problem for Tottenham and England's second qualifier, which will either be Manchester United or Chelsea.

It is possible some clubs will end up having to play two games in the same midweek.

"Rashford simply can not be in the squad," those are bold words Paul.

The Manchester United forward hasn't had the best of seasons, but which Man Utd player has?

The flip argument may be that Southgate knows Rashford's qualities, and by putting him in a class England side, surely he'll shine.

LB is where we'll struggle. Can't believe we have literally no top LB in our country, even if Shaw was fit. Rashford simply cannot be in the squad. Mainoo and Grealish also out for me from the names banded. I'd take a punt on Eze but I don't think Southgate is that adventurous, he'll stick with his select group no doubt.

  15. Is Rashford's place at risk? The wide forward conundrumpublished at 07:21 British Summer Time 21 May

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

This area of the pitch is probably where England have the most depth.

At one point you could have predicted that Southgate’s front three would be Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford.

However, with Rashford’s form and fitness with Manchester United being up and down, the left side of England’s attack is up for grabs.

Rashford was the player who brought electric pace to the England attack and, even when playing poorly, that ability to run in behind teams meant his place was safe.

However, Phil Foden has had the best season of his career - often played on the left - and it would be very hard for Southgate to leave him out.

Anthony Gordon has also had an excellent season for Newcastle and made his England debut in March. His work-rate and discipline is a big plus for him, as is his ability to run beyond the last defender.

Jack Grealish is another who missed the last international camp. He’s been in and out of the Manchester City side in another dominant campaign for them, but may have slipped down the pecking order for England. He’s been an important impact player for his country though, and played a big role in Euro 2020.

Cole Palmer must also be a consideration. He’s scored 22 Premier League goals this season and been Chelsea's standout player. He also had a 100% penalty conversion rate and that could be another factor for Southgate as he plans for the knockout part of the tournament.
