He plays well beyond his years, he's a very clever player. He came across to me as always having time on the ball, he did great at Blackburn and he's doing great under Oliver Glasner now.

I don’t know if he will but Southgate has to pick Mainoo over Henderson. He has bossed the pitch every single time he’s played and looks so calm and composed, whereas Henderson really adds nothing.

  3. Keep faith with the old guard? - big decisions in midfieldpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 21 May

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

Two of the three central midfield positions are virtually guaranteed thanks to Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham. So the question for Southgate is who are the options for the third slot?

In England squads, Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold is considered a midfielder, but that experiment has been curtailed by injury.

Jordan Henderson’s move to Saudi Arabia, and then Ajax, leaves his position in the squad vulnerable and Kalvin Phillips was not picked after his disappointing loan move to West Ham.

Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo only made his England debut in March, bypassing the under-21s, and was very impressive in friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, increasing the clamour for him to make the starting XI.

  4. Henderson out of England squad - reportspublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 21 May

Jordan Henderson will be left out of the provisional England squad for Euro 2024 when it is announced today, according to The Athletic., external

Gareth Southgate is expected to name around 30 players in his squad today, before it is whittled down to the final 26 before the tournament. The deadline for that is 7 June.

Reports suggest Henderson, who has 81 senior England caps, will not be in the selection. The 33-year-old has played for England at the last six major tournaments and has been a mainstay under Southgate.

Henderson moved to Saudi Arbian club Al-Ettifaq last summer in a controversial transfer, before returning to European football with Ajax in January.

  5. 'McKenna must be fiercely ambitious'published at 10:33 British Summer Time 21 May

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

We've seen the three promoted clubs from last season go straight back down and I look at Brighton's squad and Ipswich's squad. I think the story is incredible with everything McKenna has done. If you look at the mainstays of their League One team, many of them helped them get out of the Championship, so then to go again and stay in the Premier League, that's a very tall order.

You look at the Brighton squad and they have a better opportunity to stay up. Kieran McKenna's reputation has gone through the roof. Loyalty is important but there is also ambition and McKenna must be fiercely ambitious.

It's about a career and what is the next best step for him. I think it's logical just because of playing personnel. I don't know what Ipswich's budget is and how much money they have to spend but we saw Burnley spend £100 million, Luton didn't spend wildly but they've gone straight back down.

  6. 'McKenna must want a Premier League season with Ipswich'published at 10:30 British Summer Time 21 May

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times, on BBC Radio 5 Live

Surely Kieran McKenna must think it's flattering, but he must want to do a season in the Premier League with Ipswich.

Last summer, Spurs thought about appointing Vincent Kompany before they went for Ange Postecoglou. If Spurs were looking for a manager this summer they wouldn't go for Kompany because he's been relegated, but he's without question a better manager now compared to last summer because of everything he's been through.

I would say logically if McKenna comes up with Ipswich and goes straight back down, then it will do no damage to his reputation and will improve him as a coach.

  7. 'Brighton is a very good club for McKenna'published at 10:26 British Summer Time 21 May

    Conor Coady
Former England and current Leicester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ambition is a massive thing. Kieran McKenna got Ipswich singing a real good tune and momentum is a big thing. I think the Premier League is going to be really good next season. They've got momentum from the last two season and everyone knows their role.

I think Brighton is a very good club for him with how it's run. It's a club that give managers time to improve and he's got a squad full of fantastic players. It's an interesting one how he will judge what is best for him.

I look at Ipswich and if they lose McKenna they will be devastated. It's not just because he's a good manager but also for what he's done for that club. To go into the Premier League without him at the helm will kill them.

Chris A: Hi Phil. Where do you think Kieran McKenna is best off being next season? As an Ipswich Town fan, who already has reservations about being back in the Premier League, I would be completely hacked off if our manager is poached before a ball is kicked.

Hello Chris. I can fully understand your emotions around this after what McKenna has achieved at Portman Road. The problem would be that a club like Brighton seems such a perfect fit for him, although links with Chelsea and Manchester United would be a step too far for him at this stage in my opinion.

I actually hope he is still manager of Ipswich at the start of the next Premier League season but there is no escaping the lure of a more established top-flight club, and one that will give him time to build, would be a big one.

It’s a very big decision for him and Ipswich should Brighton make a move and maybe he will feel loyalty to the club that gave him his big chance in management – but I can see why you’re concerned.

  10. McNulty Q&A - Southgate's tacticspublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 21 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Paul: Phil - For me Southgate is very predictable, not only in his squad selection but tactics. Is it tactics or selection which trip us up in the end?

Hello, Paul. I do think it was a conservative approach that contributed to England’s loss in the World Cup semi-final against Croatia in Moscow in 2018 and the Euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley but think they actually played really well in the World Cup quarter-final against France in Qatar.

This was a game of moments and fine margins, such as a rare penalty miss by Harry Kane.

It’s a difficult balancing act because Southgate cannot just fill his team with all of England’s exciting attacking players but there is still real possibility for adventure in this team and I am sure he will see that.

Southgate should ask Foden where he wants to play and build the team around him. Palmer and Gordon deserve to play before Rashford and Grealish.

  12. Could Kompany be named Bayern boss?published at 10:12 British Summer Time 21 May

Vincent Kompany applauds Burnley supportersImage source, Getty Images

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is a surprise name on Bayern Munich’s list of potential candidates to become their new coach.

Bayern have struggled to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week after initially being announced in February.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany chief Julian Nagelsmann and current Austria coach Ralf Rangnick have all turned the job down.

Talks about persuading Tuchel to stay on failed to reach a positive conclusion, leaving Bayern with a problem.

Kompany has built a decent reputation in his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, although the Clarets relegation following lofty pre-season expectations has not reflected well on the Belgian.

However, he has knowledge of the Bundesliga from his time as a player at Hamburg and speaks German.

If Bayern were to make a formal approach, it is sure to be attractive to Kompany, who signed a five-year contract extension at Burnley in 2023 but who refused to answer questions about his future in the aftermath of Sunday’s defeat at Nottingham Forest.

  13. Serie A's European questpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 21 May

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Nine of Serie A's 20 clubs could be involved in European competition next season.

Italy gets seven slots by right, the same as England.

However, they also got one of the additional European Performance Slots and have Atalanta and Fiorentina in the Europa League and Europa Conference League finals respectively.

If both clubs are successful, given they are presently fifth and eighth in Serie A, they would go into next season's Champions League and Europa League respectively.

Roma would then get the EPS, Lazio would join Fiorentina in the Europa League and ninth-placed Torino would go into the Conference League.

  14. 'I'm so happy to stay at Arsenal'published at 10:04 British Summer Time 21 May

Stina Blackstenius has been speaking to Arsenal club media following her signing a new contract with the WSL side.

“I’m so happy to have signed a new contract here at Arsenal,” she said “In the space of two and a half years, this club has come to feel like home – that’s thanks to my team-mates and the staff of course, but most of all because of our wonderful supporters.

"There is such a special atmosphere around this club and we are all hungry to achieve more together. Your support means the world to me and I can’t wait to get back here to go again next season.”

Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall said: “Stina is a top-class striker and I’m delighted that she has signed a new deal with us. Her goalscoring naturally takes a lot of the focus, but Stina’s game is so much more than that. She’s incredibly hard-working and brings so much to the team with her clever running and physicality. I know she’ll continue to be a huge part of what we’re building here at the club.”

  15. Blackstenius signs new Arsenal dealpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 21 May

Some Women's Super League news to bring you - Swedish forward Stina Blackstenius has signed a new contract at Arsenal.

It's a boost for the Gunners with another of their star attackers, Vivianne Miedema, leaving the club this summer when her contract expires.

Blackstenius has been Arsenal's top scorer in both of her two full seasons with the club, netting 18 goals in each of the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

The 28-year-old Swedish international forward has scored 43 goals in 83 appearances for Arsenal since joining from BK Hacken in January 2022.

She scored the winner for Arsenal in the 2024 Continental Cup final against Chelsea, securing them their only major trophy of the campaign as Jonas Eidevall's side went on to finish third in the WSL.

Joe Gomez is far and away the best choice for left back. Filled in so well there Liverpool and much more productive playing on the left than he's ever been on the right.

Tony C: Regarding Southgate’s squad, given the question marks on form and fitness throughout the squad, I would have thought a versatile player such as Joe Gomez would be a ‘shoe-in’ given his excellent overall form for Liverpool, playing in every position across the back four and a couple of games in midfield. Thoughts?

I think he should be under serious consideration for that very reason, Tony, especially with questions marks over form and fitness for players who might figure at left-back such as Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell and Kieran Trippier. A versatile, adaptable player always gives a manager extra options at a major tournament.

    Joe Gomez profile

    Age: 26

    Club: Liverpool

    Position: Centre Back

What’s their season been like?: Has started to find consistently again for Liverpool after a series of injuries that he suffured from early in his career and was key in a title charge that is manger Jurgen Klopp’s last season. Southgate himself is “delighted” by Gomez’s resurgence.

Paul in Huddersfield: Hi Phil, we all know England have plenty of attacking talent, but question marks at the back. Do you see a “complete” team in this year's tournament, or has everyone got a notable weakness?

Hi Paul. I must admit I did look at the France squad when it was named the other day and thought about how strong it was, and England are slated to possibly meet them in the Euro 2024 semi-final.

I don’t think there is a complete squad, however, and that’s why I think England have a real chance in Germany.

The Spaniard says Arsenal only getting a goalless draw at City in March was key to their failure to overhaul the Citizens at the top.
