Summary

  1. 'We have to adapt'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 21 May

BBC 5 Live's John Murray has interviewed England manager Gareth Southgate about his training squad ahead of the Euros.

Is there a concern with Luke Shaw's injury and Ben Chilwell's absence that there may not be an out and out left back?

“No, I think we have seen some big teams in club football deal with that in different ways in the last few years and we have had that situation ourselves before.

“There are players who have played left back both at club level and with us.

“We recognise there isn’t that obvious natural replacement, but we have to adapt and find the best possible way.”

  2. 'We have got to go with young players'published at 17:46 British Summer Time 21 May

BBC 5 Live's John Murray has interviewed England manager Gareth Southgate about his training squad ahead of the Euros.

Was there any prospect of Jordan Henderson coming in with a different role?

“I think he would have embraced anything like that, he is a team person.”

Was that not something you thought of as a possibility?

“I think if we are picking 26 players, then they all need to be physically at the level to get on the pitch and perform for us.

“Unfortunately, since Hendo’s injury sort of eight weeks ago, he hasn’t been able to find the intensity.

“He’s covering the distance, but the intensity of his game [he] hasn’t quite been able to find yet.

“In the last camp that we had, a lot of senior players went home and I challenged some of the younger group to step up and embrace that leadership opportunity and they did that really well.

“When things are forced upon you, those windows for others to step forward are there, that is what you find, young people step into that gap and they develop, it gives them a chance to shine.”

A lot of senior players aren’t involved here should we be worried about that? That all of that experience is not there?

“You would rather have it, but in a lot of these positions in midfield unfortunately Kalvin has dropped out of the picture, Jordan has dropped out of the picture.

“So, the other options are young players, so we have got to go with young players.”

  3. 'We would be silly not to use the allocation'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 21 May

BBC 5 Live's John Murray has interviewed England manager Gareth Southgate about his training squad ahead of the Euros.

Will it definitely be a 26-player squad you name?

“I think given the situation we find ourselves in we would be more likely to take the full 26, because even though a lot of situations will be clearer, we might need more players.

“We would be silly not to use the allocation what we have got.”

No chance Wharton stays in this squad. You can't have both Mainoo and Wharton, and Mainoo's been doing it at a top club under real pressure. Nor should Lewis Dunk and James Maddison be anywhere near this squad.

Foden and Bellingham? Play two No.10s.

    David, Guiseley

Trent is the answer to both the Foden position and left-back issue. Play Walker, Stones and Branthwaite (a lefty) with TAA starting at right-back. He moves into DM/Quarterback roll allowing Bellingham and Foden to advance from CM. More freedom for Rice too. Back three when TAA moves. Simple.

Crystal Palace are working on a deal to sign Real Betis defender Chadi Riad in deal worth €12m plus €2m euros in add-ons.

The 20-year-old joined Betis from Barcelona last summer and made 30 appearances this campaign.

Palace defender Marc Guehi is also of interest to a number of teams, and has been linked to Manchester United and enters the final two years of his contract this summer.

Guehi was included in Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for Euro 2024.

  7. Wharton can be a 'top, top player'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 21 May

Adam Wharton has all the attributes to be a "top, top player" says head of the Blackburn Rovers academy Stuart Jones.

Wharton joined the Blackburn academy aged six and progressed through to the first team before joining Crystal Palace this year ahead of his first England call-up.

"In terms of his attributes, he was always an outstanding footballer, intelligence, his ability on the football," Jones said.

"I think the other side, he was a real humble young man as he came to our academy and he had all the attributes to go on and be a top, top player.

"He was actually up at the training ground a couple of weeks ago, saying hello to the players and staff so I’m sure we'll bump into each other and drop him a message. Obviously I wish him the best of luck!"

Luke: Anyone saying cut Toney from the squad doesn’t understand systems and tactics. He’s the only experienced out and out striker. Watkins should be in too but he’s only been playing down the middle a few years as is a very different player and would require a system change if Kane out.

For Bellingham and Foden, you must play both. I think a 3-2-2-2-1 would be the best use of the talent. Rice and Alexander-Arnold, Foden and Bellingham, Saka and Palmer, then Kane. Any opposition will have trouble tracking all that creative attacking talent.

    Joe, Surrey

I'd put Foden in his normal position for City, and Bellingham in central midfield. I don't see any reason why they can't both play in the same team.

  10. 'Wharton sees things that possibly other players don't'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 21 May

Head of the Blackburn Rovers academy Stuart Jones says Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton sees things "other players don't see".

The 20-year-old was called to England’s initial Euros squad after impressing following his move from Blackburn to Palace for £18m during the January transfer window.

His first England call-up comes after just 16 Premier League games.

"His football intelligence and game understanding, he sees things that possibly other players don’t see and he’s always shown that from a young age," Jones said.

"I think now he's shown that at the top end of the Premier League and that’s always been a real attribute of his.

"As Adam was coming through our system we always knew he had the capabilities and attributes to play at the highest level."

  11. Why is Ben White not in the England squad?published at 17:15 British Summer Time 21 May

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

His ability to play right-back and centre-back would - in theory - be more crucial than ever as Gareth Southgate deals with injury issues in defence before naming his final squad for the Euros in Germany on 7 June.

The situation is clearly complicated with the player having feelings about a potential lack of game time with England. He has made four England appearances, all in friendlies, and did not feature in the opening three games of Qatar before his exit from the World Cup.

White is a fierce competitor, and the view around the player not caring about football or loving the game is not correct.

It is true that being a footballer is not his complete identity and he does like to do things not connected to football when he is not at training.

What is clear is that White is playing the best football of his career in the meanest defence in the Premier League this season. With Reece James not making the squad and several injury concerns elsewhere in the defence, the depth at full-back and even centre-half is not what it once was for Southgate.

There was an incident with Steve Holland in a team meeting where a comment was made by the England assistant in front of other squad members. White and Holland did speak afterwards, and Southgate made clear in the press conference when White ruled himself out that there was not an argument or an issue between White and Holland.

So, that feels like one of the big headaches for Gareth Southgate ahead of the Euros.

How do you get Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham, two of the best players in the world right now, in the same starting 11?

Does one go wide? Both in midfield? Something more out there?

Have your say via the usual channels.

  13. The number 10 battlepublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 21 May

Jude Bellingham has scored 23 goals and registered 12 assists for Real Madrid this season. Cole Palmer has 27 goals with 15 assists.

And Phil Foden has netted 27 times with 11 assists.

It could be argued all play their best in the central position behind the striker, so can Gareth Southgate fit them all in?

On Southgate saying he hasn't called Ben White: I get that you want people who want to play for the team - but it's bad in my opinion that they haven't even spoken. Maybe there's an issue that could be resolved, maybe there isn't - but you'd think it was worth a chat even if he isn't coming out this time. A big talent to have left out in the cold for reasons that still aren't clear.

Putellas extends Barcelona contractpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 21 May

Some women's football news to bring you, as Alexia Putellas has extended her contract at Barcelona until 2026.

Putellas, 30, had been locked in negotiations over extending her deal, which was due to run out this summer.

The two-time Ballon d'Or Feminin winner was linked with moves to the Women's Super League and National Women's Soccer League in the USA, but those rumous have been out put to bed as her new deal was confirmed on Tuesday.

The Barcelona captain will now lead her team into the Women's Champions League final on Saturday against Lyon, as they aim to defend their title.

Barcelona, who beat Chelsea in the semi-finals, are on course for a quadruple season after winning the league title and domestic cup double.

Matt in London: Hi Alex - interested to hear your thoughts on why Tyrick Mitchell wasn't selected? He made the fifth most tackles in the Premier League this year, and will surely go some way to solving our (significant) issues at left back. Gareth Southgate also selected him before - why do you think he's been left out this time?

Mitchell, like a lot of the players at Palace, has been in excellent form towards the end of the season and since Oliver Glasner has taken over.

It’s a good point about him playing before, but I think the fact he hasn’t been in the squad for two years means he’s not one that Southgate is considering. Maybe if the team had been playing this attacking football at the beginning of the season he would have had a chance to be in this group.

Terry in Ashford: I feel sorry that Harvey Elliott has been overlooked. No one has mentioned him; such a talented player and finished strongly at the end of the season.

He has been very good for Liverpool and because he’s been around for so long you do forget that he’s only 21. He’s another player who played in that England U21 team who won the Euros last summer. I’m sure he will get a chance at some point but others seem to have jumped ahead of him in Southgate’s eyes.

Irish Hammer: When Bosnia and Iceland expose us down the flanks, will Gareth Southgate call up cover for our aging and injury prone full backs?

Gareth Southgate will be hoping that doesn’t happen but it’s a question that has been asked, especially over the left back position. Kieran Trippier has played some big games for England at left back and Ezri Konsa impressed at right back against Brazil when he was up against Vinicius Jr. I know he’s listed as a midfielder in this squad but Trent Alexander-Arnold is still a pretty good option to have!

  19. 'Trying to fill Klopp's shoes is impossible'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 21 May

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Trying to fill Jurgen Klopp's shoes is an impossibility. I think Liverpool fans are a really patient fanbase and he will be given time, but there will always be a certain level of expectation.

Klopp came in with heavy metal football and took everyone by storm. They are well set up but I think next season is about stabilising and then I think Liverpool fans will be expecting to push teams like Manchester City again.

It depends who leaves. Mo Salah could end up going, he's got a year left, so does Virgil Van Dijk and the odd one is Trent [Alexander-Arnold] - he's only got a year left.

When players let their contract run down like that then it is pretty telling. Liverpool won't want to let him leave on a free.

That loyalty factor - Salah, Van Dijk, Trent, [Andy] Robertson and Alisson - there comes a time when there is a natural end. Maybe they are thinking he [Klopp] has gone and maybe it's time we move on as well.

  20. 'I hope Slot buys into English football culture'published at 16:47 British Summer Time 21 May

Dutch football journalist Marcel van der Kraan on new Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "I've said this about every Dutch manager going to England, I always had big reservations about understanding the culture.

"Jurgen Klopp, as a German, has really understood more than any other foreign manager over the last so many years - he understood what the club was about, he clicked with the fans because he studied them, he understood the mentality of Liverpool and every other Dutchman so far has not understood the mentality - and I'm not going back as far as Ruud Gullitt because he played for Chelsea and then became a manager, won the FA Cup.

"At the moment Arne Slot will have to deal with that much more than anything else because he plays like Klopp; he loves pressing football, he'll develop players, he talks well, great communication, great man management but understanding Liverpool as a football club.

"I was lucky because I used to live in England, half my family is English so that's where I always warned, I warned Louis van Gaal, I warned Erik ten Hag, you're made much more for German Bundesliga football which is where you almost live.

"Arne Slot, his English is great, I think that will help him much better than any other manager and I hope he buys into that culture of English football."
