Jon from Kidderminster: The fact that Jack Butland is not in the squad is shocking. An assured keeper who's played every game should be over Aaron Ramsdale who's warmed the bench.

Hi John. It’s a good point about an English goalkeeper playing regularly as there aren’t many. Jordan Pickford will play every game unless he picks up an injury that keeps him out. Ramsdale is known to the squad and Southgate has built a club feel since he has been manager. The characters of players are part of his decision and while that is nothing against Butland, it may be that he has gone for players he knows are good around the squad and good while away from home at a tournament.

Dave in Whitstable: Hi Alex, Win (hopefully) or lose do you believe this will be Gareth Southgate's last stint as the England manager, and if he were to go, who would you like to see take up the role.

Hi Dave. That’s a tough one to start with! But, I do think it really depends on how England do. If they win or come close in a positive way I can imagine Southgate could be tempted by the World Cup in 2026. The FA want him to continue so it could be a case where everyone wants things to stay as they are. However, if they were to underperform in the tournament I think it would be difficult for any international manager to stay with the talent England have in attacking areas.

I would cut - Trafford, Dunk, Gomez, Quansah, Jones, Grealish and Toney.

    Stefan, Cardiff

Gordon deservedly selected over Rashford. He should be in the final squad also.

    Dean in Newcastle

Players to drop would be: GK: Trafford DEF: Dunk, Quansah MID: Wharton FWD: Toney, Bowen, Maddison

Joey: I think Rico Lewis is very unlucky not to be given a chance considering he is capable of playing at left back (starting there on his England debut and winning Man of the Match). I’d also like to know whether Olise was ever considered given his omission from France’s squad.

Alex, Greenwich: What's with the left back crisis! Surely Tyrick Mitchell should've been considered? He's had a phenomenal season for Palace.

Neal, Southampton: How can he not pick Chilwell as a genuine left back. Gomez will do a job and offers versatility but I think picking Trippier is the most controversial selection in the squad. He’s had a terrible season and is never a left back at the best of times. Huge gamble as Shaw very unlikely to make it. Livramento would have been a left field pick but I suspect most Newcastle fans would go with him at left back rather than Trippier.

Southgate will omit Dunk, Gomez, Konsa, Quansah, Jones, Wharton and Gordon

    Jonny from Exeter

As a Liverpool fan it's great to see Quansah there but no way should he be heading to Germany. I'd leave him behind with Dean Henderson, Dunk, Shaw (injured I presume), Konsa, Wharton and Maddison who just hasn't looked the same since being back from injury. It's an exciting squad to bring the cup home nevertheless!

  11. Southgate has 'not thought' about future beyond Eurospublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 21 May

In an interview with BBC Sports Editor Dan Roan, Gareth Southgate has said that he has not thought about his future beyond this summer's European Championships.

Southgate has been rumoured to be on Manchester United's radar and linked with a departure from the England job after eight years at the helm.

Southgate said: "I think it would be more likely that I would disappear somewhere for 6 months and sit on a beach [if we won].

"I’ve not thought beyond this tournament. Nothing other than this tournament has entered my head over the past few months."

  13. Nothing in Kane's back injurypublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 21 May

In an interview with BBC Sports Editor Dan Roan, Gareth Southgate has confirmed that there is nothing in the back injury England captain Harry Kane has recently been struggling with during Bayern Munich's Champions League exit to Real Madrid that saw him miss the final round of the Bundesliga fixtures.

Outgoing Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel had said Kane had travelled back to England for treatment on it.

Southgate said: "As far as we can tell that seems to be clear now. I don’t know what the possibilities are of recurrences."

Feel so sorry for Southgate. Fans moan that he picks the same players no matter their form, and now so much moaning for a lack of experience in leaving out players like Henderson and Rashford! I think it's a really positive and progressive squad.

  16. 'Southgate's biggest concern will be the defence'published at 15:21 British Summer Time 21 May

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter on 5 Live

Gareth Southgate's biggest concern will be the defence. Of his established back four of Kyle Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Kieran Trippier, Trippier has only played three games since March - something like 27 minutes.

Maguire hasn't played the last four games for Manchester United and Stones has had only one start since the FA Cup semi-final.

So only Walker out of the probable back four that will start that opening game on 16 June against Serbia has been playing regularly.

Really happy with the squad. A lot of the 'old guard' who haven't played well recently or featured a lot for their clubs, were rightly left out. Only tweak I'd make is Dier In Quansah Out. The experience could come in handy but take nothing away from Jarell, excellent season.

Rich in Oxford: Hi Phil, Do you think England have learned a lesson from previous tournament failings under Southgate, or do you think we will see the same negative tactics at the sharp end of the tournament as witnessed against Italy and France?

Hello Rich. I would accept that for Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final and the Euro 2020 Final against Italy at Wembley but I actually thought England played very well and lost a tight game to France in the Qatar World Cup quarter-final. This can happen. I didn’t think it was down to negativity, just moments such as Harry Kane missing a penalty, which again can happen.

There is certainly enough attacking talent to be very positive in Germany.

  20. McNulty Q&A - Southgate's loyaltypublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 21 May

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

@seaniemcquack on “X” Will conservatism and “loyalty” be Gareth Southgate’s downfall?

Too early to say that, Seanie, but I get your point. These are charges that have been levelled at Gareth Southgate before. He has always stood steadfastly behind Harry Maguire, even when he has either been playing poorly or not playing at all for Manchester United, and I do have a real concern about England’s central defence.

The problem has been a lack of alternatives. In the end he effectively had to drop Kalvin Phillips because there was simply no reason to pick him any more – but in general I think his loyalty has been rewarded.

As for “conservatism”, again I get your point and think it has cost England in the past but there is also a need for pragmatism as well, which I think is why this charge that he is too conservative is an irritation to Southgate.

Euro 2024 will deliver the answer.
