Summary

  1. 'Sterling has the ability to change games'published at 14:31 British Summer Time 21 May

Former Fulham midfielder on Football News Show special

The main talking point is that experience for people who have been mainstays.

Look at Raheem Sterling in terms of what he has done. He has the ability to change games with his pace and that level of aura when he gets into those positions. He has been there and done it.

Not having him or Marcus Rashford at the top of the pitch with their experience is a big one.

  2. Henderson took the news 'well'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 21 May

Jordan Henderson has been a trusted lieutenant for Gareth Southgate in previous tournaments. But since his move back to Europe after his controversial move to Saudi Arabia he missed five weeks towards the end of the season.

Southgate said he did all he could but couldn't get up to that level required. He praised how well Henderson took the news.

We'll bring you plenty more reaction to the announcement of the provisional England squad for Euro 2024 throughout this afternoon.

  5. 'The job is to adapt to situations'published at 14:24 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on adapting to injuries and challenges: "The job is here to adapt to the situations you have and they are the cards you dealt with. The consequences you are dealt with. The injuries are a complex thing, they are not one of the things you spoke about, but they could be a lot of those things.

"Some have played a lot of football, some have come back earlier than they could’ve been. A lot of matches in the calendar. It’s too easy to say winter World Cup or this or that. There’s players with better injury records than others, training intensities. Everyone wants simple solutions, but it isn’t that."

  6. Can England win Euro 2024?published at 14:23 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on if England can win the Euros: "Of course, everyone is waiting for that headline, I’m not going to be an idiot and say no. This team have been close already, they know it is is possible. You can see in cup football, you have to navigate game by game, get through the group and then in knockout football, you see Manchester City only got to where they got to because it is fine margins. You get judged on those moments."

  7. Postpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "We've shared that load a lot more. Across that forward line you can see the number of goals those players have scored for their clubs. You need those options. The physical demands of a seven-game tournament, to go the distance you need good depth and the ability to refresh the squad."

  8. 'Definitely more attacking options'published at 14:20 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on whether the squad is better or worse than the one at the last tournament: "I’d probably be able to asses that better when we’re able to finalise the squad really. There’s definitely more options in attacking options, if I think back to Russia and the balance of the team.

"It’s hard to compare. We’ve had good squads at every tournament, different balance, different solutions. I think we’ve got a pretty set style of play now, everyone enjoys it, I don’t think we’re going to move too far from it and I think the team will evolve through that."

  9. 'We're really happy with where the squad is at'published at 14:18 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on squad balance: "There's a lot of tournament experience now, even with our younger players. We're really happy with where the squad is at. But everything starts from zero. It doesn't matter what we've done in the past."

  10. 'There are a lot of changes from Qatar 2022'published at 14:17 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on how the squad has evolved: "With this group, some of them might not be for this summer, but for the future as well. We've evolved as a team in every tournament. There are now a lot of changes from the last Euros, and from Qatar as well."

  11. 'White is unavailable'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on whether he called Ben White: "No. As far as I am aware he is unavailable."

  12. 'We've never had so many unknown situations'published at 14:15 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on injury concerns: "There’s quite a big number, that would be apparent when you look at who has missed the last games of the season and also, who has just come back. Some players need minutes, others need refreshing. I think we’ve navigated that well in previous end-of-season tournaments.

"We've never had so many unknown situations. We've had tournaments where we've taken a players where we know they will be back for a certain moment. We're used to dealing with it.

"I always like to give players as much clarity as possible. But on this occasion we're not able to do that."

  13. 'You want Phil in central areas'published at 14:14 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Phil Foden's position: "Anthony (Gordon) has obviously missed the last game with an injury, so that’s part of it.

"Phil has played off the right and left, but the key is where he ends up not his starting position. At City, he’s able to drift and it’s the same as us. Jude has played all season as a number 10 and sometimes, has defended on the left. It’s all about where they end up.

"We don’t pin players to a touchline, that’s not how we work. You want Phil in those central areas. It’s obvious how brilliant Phil’s season has been, he’s stepped up in big games, not only when big players are missing but when playing alongside them too."

  14. 'Dier has played well'published at 14:13 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "[Eric Dier's] played very well for Bayern and I know they are very happy with him. He's just behind the guys we've selected. We watch every game and he has played well in the Champions League as well. We've assessed all of that."

  15. 'No reason why young players can't lead'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on what the squad will miss without Jordan Henderson: "[Jordan Henderson] will be a miss. He's an exceptional individual and fantastic human being. He's been in that leadership role for a long time.

"There’s so many ways you can make other people lead. Some players can defer to a hierarchy and we’ve got too many influential players. I’ve noticed occasions where ever with the captain and vice-captain there’s differential behaviour, we don’t want that, we want to encourage.

  16. 'I wouldn't be obsessed with positions'published at 14:10 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on squad positions: "I wouldn’t be obsessed with the positions because they can move, I wish it was just forwards and backs.

"I don’t know where we need to cut. If we picked tomorrow, we could have a dozen defenders because we don’t know where we’re at. In a couple of weeks, we will be in a better position with that. There’s a lot to think about over the next couple of weeks.

"I’d love it to be cleaner than it is, but that’s not the situation we’re in."

The official England squad annoucement lists players in positional groups. It has some interesting quirks - including Jude Bellingham as a forward and Trent Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder.

  17. 'Shaw is a long shot'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "[Luke Shaw's] up against it. He's missed a lot of football. The fact that he has been our first choice in that position, we've probably given him a lot longer than we would have done. I’ve talked with him and the medical team, we’ve been liaising with Manchester United, I'm not sure what's realistic at this time. I have to say, he's a long shot."

  18. 'Hendo has given himself every chance'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Jordan Henderson's absence': "The 33 isn’t quite a fair definition because we’re taking a longer squad with some younger players to look at. Hendo has given himself every chance. From the last camp, he missed five weeks through injury and he hasn’t been able to get to that tempo since then. It’s a big call to make, the three players from last time, he, Ben (White) and Marcus (Rashford) all had excellent professionalism.

  19. 'As complicated a group as I can remember'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 21 May

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on the difficulties naming the squad: "Everyone has a chance, there’s definitely some players we wanted to see. We were in a similar position in the last Euros, more time may allow us to make better decisions and a more balanced squad. Some injuries we don’t have all of the information. This has been as complicated a group as I can remember making. There are better decisions to make. Sometimes times doesn’t help you make a decision."

  20. Postpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 21 May

It is very worth reiterating that this is NOT the final England squad for Euro 2024.

This 33-man selection will be whittled down to 26 following the friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland on 3 and 7 June.

We expect to have confirmation of the final England squad on 8 June.
