Briefly away from the England chat, yesterday Liverpool confirmed that Arne Slot will take over as their manager next season, replacing Jurgen Klopp.

The Monday Night Club yesterday discussed Slot's prospects at Anfield, here's what they had to say...

Quansah seems like a left field pick when you have Dier at Bayern and Tomori at Milan! Not sure what Tomori needs to do to get a look in from Gareth.

Garfield in Ipswich: Just putting it out there but what about Fikayo Tomori? Just feels as if due to being out of sight he's out of contention. Shame, as he can provide much of the pace, experience and stability we crave - and he's played (almost) regularly for AC Milan the last 3 years.

Tomori has been in quite a few squads under Southgate but I don’t think he’s ever really been an option to be a mainstay of this England team. Southgate has placed importance on playing in the Premier League in the past and has younger centre backs in Marc Guehi, Jarrad Branthwaite, Ezri Konsa and now Jarell Quansah. Joe Gomez is also back in the fold after he ended his four year break from the squad in March.

It's great to see some fresh faces in the provisional squad. Four Palace players who all deserve to be in that squad.

Mark Madera, California: I would really like to know if anyone has reached out to Michael Olise to see if he’d entertain playing for England after being left out of the French squad. Great talent. Also, Jack Butland for Aaron Ramsdale would make sense. Ramsdale hasn’t seen the pitch for months and when he did it was disastrous!

The FA do monitor these situations but Southgate has always said he wouldn’t pressure players with mixed heritage as it’s such a delicate and personal decision. He would definitely be an interesting player to consider if he did say he was open to representing England, he’s been excellent for Palace.

I’m sure Southgate has his reasons for sticking with Ramsdale. His passing ability is probably the most similar to Pickford’s out of the keepers who are left to pick from.

Got to cut 7 out? I can do 6, for starters. Trafford - not good enough to be No1 at a relegated side Luke Shaw - won't recover in time Harry Maguire - not mobile enough. Jarell Quansah - nice to get him involved with the squad but not enough club experience to justify taking him. Toney - it will do him well to sit out this competition and have appetite for the World Cup Jarrod Bowen - does he gives us anything different to the other lads in his position?

    Tristan - Surrey

Any saying Konsa should be left at home clearly doesn't watch much football. Best tackle success rate in the league. Massive player for Villa and can go to back 3 or even RB. I'd say only Stones is a better CB. Cut: Trafford, Quansah, Branthwaite, Jones, Wharton, (unfortunately) Maddison and Toney (if Watkins misses out with 32 G+A it's a crime)

    James from Birmingham

Would leave Henderson, Dunk, Gomez, Shaw (injured), Wharton, Maddison and Tony. You could pick holes in various things so Gareth can’t win sometimes but couple aside from those I’d drop the likes of Trippier and Grealish got to consider themselves lucky to go given injuries/form/lack of game time.

Anon: When will we know who Gareth has dropped?

Southgate has to submit his final squad by midnight on June 7th. The FA will then announce the squad on June 8th but I can imagine like today there will be a mad scramble to find out who has been confirmed in the squad.

As an example, Southgate has said that Luke Shaw is ‘up against it’ to be fit in time for the tournament. He is going to use the next two weeks to see if he can get fit. If it’s clear he won’t make it, there’s a chance that he could be cut before that deadline. Southgate said today he couldn’t be certain when he’d let players go.

On a really outside chance, if there was a terrible run of injuries in this squad and all the defenders got injured, Southgate could pick players who are not in this group - but that is very unlikely.

Ben, Eastbourne: Hi Alex. With Rashford, Henderson and Sterling in particular (players who've been in all of his tournament squads) do you think Southgate has somewhat put to bed the notion that he is mindlessly loyal to the same group of players regardless of form?

I think so. A lot of journalists here at St George’s Park have remarked that it was particularly ruthless from Southgate today. The decision to leave Henderson out pretty much ends his international career. At the World Cup in Qatar people would have said you were mad if you had left those three out of your squad.

Mark: Toney over Solanke? What’s Southgate thinking? At least he’s dropped Rashford & Henderson at last. Great to see young Quansah in the team. He’s been great for Liverpool all season.

  10. 'As complicated a group as I can remember picking'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 21 May

Gareth Southgate has selected 11 defenders in the squad along with 12 forwards, although that includes all of England's wide attacking options.

He confirmed that number would have to be reduced by June 7, with his attackers likely to trimmed.

"I think you can take too many forwards," he added. "You can have too many options in certain areas of the pitch. Of course, with forwards you've got to give them love and make them feel special.

"If you've got too many, that can also be complicated. There's a lot to think about over the next couple of weeks. I'd have loved it to be cleaner and more definitive, but it's not the situation we're in.

To cut from the England training squad: Trafford, Quansah, Wharton, Toney, Maddison, Dunk. Dependent on fitness (which is looking likely), unfortunately Shaw has to join that list. If fit, I think Jones needs to be left behind. Some good players on the list but you can’t take everyone! That said, another left-back really should be in there, but that’s another story.

    Rishi from London

I would cut Trafford, Dunk, Quansah, Grealish, Toney, Konsa, Bowen

    Ewan, Southampton

Seven out: Dean Henderson (won't play), Maguire (shouldn't), Mainoo, Wharton, Maddison, Jones (better options in squad), Kane (cursed).

Andrew Brooks in Carlisle: Thoughts on Jarrad Branthwaite? He's had a fantastic season and was unlucky not to play during the last friendlies. Does Jarrad get a place on the plane?

Hi Andrew. Jarrad Branthwaite is an excellent player. I went to the U21 European Championships in Georgia last summer and was shocked at how big he is. He’s a proper centre back. He played against Germany in that competition and I was told by someone at the FA that he was a player to watch, who could jump all the young centre backs. In the last year he’s continued to progress and he’s a big reason Everton stayed up. His physicality and the fact he’s left footed also helps.

Rishi in London: Hi Alex. How would you line-up for that first game against Serbia? It seems we are blessed with a wealth of attacking talent, and may be comparatively weaker at the back! How do you think we can set up to get the best out of this squad and maybe push for some silverware? Maybe a bit much, but would you change the set-up against certain teams that might give us trouble (thinking mainly of France here)?

Hi Rishi. Oh, that’s a tough one. There’s probably two line-ups in my head. One that I think Gareth could go with and one that would be fun to see how many attacking players in a team that I would go with. Here’s what I think he’ll pick.

    Pickford

Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw (if fit)

    Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham

    Saka, Kane, Foden

Mainoo was excellent in March and think his ability to keep the ball gets him in.

I can definitely see Southgate changing personnel against teams but England played on the front foot against France in Qatar so maybe not as many changes as you think.

Not enough talk about Maddison being selected - five goals and assists in his 17 matches since injury is awful form, surely that's a place Sancho could have taken.

Grant in London: Pleasing to see acknowledgement for Branthwaite and Eze in particular. Spot on leaving out Rashford and Henderson, but will he be brave enough to chop Maguire also?

Hi Grant. I agree it’s great to see acknowledgement for those players breaking into the squad. On Maguire, I think if he’s fit, he plays. He has 63 caps, has been to major tournaments and has not let Southgate down on the big stage.

He has a settled partnership with John Stones for England. There’s a lot of young players in this squad so I think Southgate will also lean on Maguire's experience.

  16. Butland unlucky to miss out?published at 16:13 British Summer Time 21 May

Jack Butland has 18 clean sheets from 33 league games for Rangers this season.

Of the four keepers in the England squad, Jordan Pickford kept 13 clean sheets in 38 league games, Dean Henderson had four from 18 matches, Aaron Ramsdale two in six Premier League appearances, and James Trafford kept two in 28 for beleagured Burnley.

Alan: I think Southgate "should" omit Grealish, Trafford, Dunk, Wharton, Konsa plus two others.

Richard: Southgate should leave out Trafford, Quansah, Shaw, Dunk, Jones, Grealish & Eze. Both Watkins and Toney need to go as back ups in case Kane gets injured.

Gary: Trafford, Quansah, Jones, Maddison, and Dunk all to go. The last two depend on Shaw's fitness. Out of Shaw, Wharton, Grealish, and Eze I'd imagine. I'd like to keep Wharton and Eze ideally.

AMR: How about Champions League finalist Jadon Sancho? It would be like a home game for him at the Euros.

Sancho has definitely shown that he can still compete at the top level and has done well since signing for Borussia Dortmund on loan. However, England have the most depth in their squad in those attacking areas and it maybe that Southgate thinks, like Rashford that there are players who have had better seasons than him. It would be safe to say that Kane and Saka will be part of the front three and it will be a brave person to lave Foden out too. You then have Bowen, Eze, Grealish and Gordon behind them.
