All this pro-Watkins anti-Toney talk, Toney is a presence and holds up the ball well, bringing others into play. This is arguably of greater importance with all the attacking talent around the squad. Not saying Watkins shouldn't also be included mind you!

    Ben, St Albans

Luke: Solanke must be so frustrated to not even make the provisional list, he's had a much better season than Toney.

  2. Watkins or Toney?published at 15:05 British Summer Time 21 May

    Michael Brown
Former Fulham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think you need two back up strikers behind Harry Kane. The flexibility with the wide players gives you so much freedom that you don't need to take both Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney.

Not happy with some decisions made by Southgate. Butland should be one of the three keepers. No specialist left-back to cover Shaw and are Quansah, Dunk and Branthwaite better than Dier.

    Roger in London

Most of the big name omissions are not really that surprising. However, picking Toney over Solanke is inexcusable. Solanke registered a career best 19 goals this season, Toney managed just 4, and finished the season with a barren run of 12 games without a goal.

Jude Bellingham could do that role at 6 for me. He could go next to Declan Rice in a bit of a more reserved role.

Or if Gareth Southgate wants to be brave he could ask Rice to play the 6 on his own and get Bellingham forward with Phil Foden.

I think England have to go for it and be brave. I think Declan Rice has proven he could play on his own.

A reminder that Bellingham is down as a forward on the squad list...

Although he’s clearly had a bad season, still feel it’s a mistake not to take Rashford. I can’t see many players that offer his pace down the left side. Other than that squad looks good.

    Andy in Warwick

Southgate is spot on for not selecting Rashford. He cannot expect to play for England at a major tournament after the awful season he has just had! Never mind the lack of goals and assists, just the general lack of effort on a weekly basis. It would set a poor example to kids if he was picked.

There are six players named as midfielders in the England squad - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Gallagher, Curtis Jones, Kobbie Mainoo, Declan Rice and Adam Wharton.

They have 87 senior caps between them, Rice accounting for 50 of them.

Jordan Henderson, on his own, has 81 caps.

Will the lack of experience cost England, or will Southgate's selection prove justified?

Jack: Rashford doesn't have the mindset right now. Look at the likes of Gordon, he is focused, obsessed and intense. Rashford doesn't have that.

Luke: Marcus Rashford would struggle to get back into the starting XI with so many young players available

  9. Will Shaw make it?published at 14:49 British Summer Time 21 May

Left-back is the one area of huge concern. England need to give Luke Shaw as much time as they can to get fit, he is one that has to go.

Gareth Southgate said Shaw "is a long shot" and is "up against it" with injury recovery.

Re: decision to pick Watkins/Toney. The backup striker choice should also be considered alongside Rashford's omission. Watkins can provide pace and stretch defences, something Rashford is good at. So form and attributes all point to Watkins getting the nod.

It will be interesting to see if there was a problem with Jordan Pickford who would Gareth Southgate go with next.

I think Eric Dier is very unlucky not to make the squad. He's got so much experience at senior level, is so versatile and has seen a return to more than decent form at Munich.

Eric Dier did so well towards the end of the season, he will like now feel like the door is closed forever.

Is that the end of Dier's international career?

  16. Five uncapped players in initial squadpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 21 May

Uncapped quintet Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Adam Wharton and James Trafford have made Gareth Southgate's initial selection.

Matt: Has to be asked why Rashford doesn’t make the squad but Grealish does? Grealish has had a woeful, injury-filled season. Is it because he has the fortune to play for a team that would’ve become champions with or without him?

Mike: Rashford may need to do a Sancho - though he will have to take a huge wage cut to leave Man U it doesn't seem like it's a great place to be playing right now.

It is great to see so many youngsters. Gareth Southgate has included some for that experience to get that feel for a tournament even if they probably don't make the final squad.

It is worth noting one other omission from this England squad, Levi Colwill.

It was widely reported (including by ourselves) that the Chelsea defender would be selected by Southgate today, however the 21-year-old has missed out.

It means the injured Luke Shaw is the only specialist left back in the 33-man squad.
