England manager Gareth Southgate on Marcus Rashford's absence: "These are of course difficult calls. You are talking about players that are very important players. With Marcus, in that area of the pitch, I feel that other players have had better seasons, it’s as simple as that."

Surely Harvey Elliott should be in the 30 man squad? He’s been in brilliant form in 2024, and among Liverpool’s most creative players.

    Ben in London

If Solanke misses out for Toney this will be an outrage. Not sure what more Solanke could do? 19 goals not enough?

    Neil

Grealish may not have particularly high goal contributions, but he can always win you a freekick in a dangerous position, and in the 90th minute of a knockout game that could be vital.

With Marcus Rashford's exclusion, it begs the question, does his Manchester United team-mate Jadon Sancho deserve a place?

Borussia Dortmund, who the midfielder is currently on loan with, certainly think so. They've posted this reply, external to the official England account on X.

  8. James' injury-hit seasonpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 21 May

Chelsea captain Reece James has struggled this season following a series of injuries.

James has made just 11 club appearances this season, totalling less then 500 minutes of football.

He recently made his return from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the majority of this season, but missed the Blues' final match of the season after being sent as a substitute during the Blues' win at Brighton last week.

The right-back has not featured for England since coming on as a late substitute during a 2-1 win over Italy in March 2023.

Toby: Surely Morgan Gibbs-White is worth a shout? 15 goals/assists in a team which struggled for the majority of the season. Put him around players who are on his level and watch him thrive, maybe it's my Forest bias but he's been incredible for us.

Couldn’t agree more about Morgan Gibbs-White, Toby. He has been a top-class performance in an indifferent season. He is another who suffers from playing in a position where there is so much competition.

Alfie, Crystal Palace fan: Why is Tyrick Mitchell not being considered for left-back for England? Played nearly every game and had some standout performances.

Hi Alfie, agree he has played well but Gareth Southgate clearly feels he has better alternatives for what is a problem position after trying him out with England. That position is a real worry, though.

Jordan in Birmingham: Surely Lewis Hall is now a great shout for left-back for the squad? There isn’t currently a better English left back fit and available.

Don’t think he has played enough, Jordan, although I certainly agree left-back is a position of real concern for England going into Euro 2024.

Jonny in London: Why is no one talking about Dier who has been playing regularly for Bayern, or the uncapped Marcus Edwards who won the league with Sporting Lisbon this season?

Hello, Jonny. Just think Gareth Southgate has moved on from Eric Dier and unfortunately for Marcus Edwards he operates in an area of fierce competition.

  16. Is Olise eligible to play for England?published at 13:38 British Summer Time 21 May

With the news that Crystal Palace quartet Eberechi Eze, Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton are all in today's provisional England squad, there have been question marks over whether fellow Palace winger Michael Olise is eligible to play for England.

Olise has scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 19 Premier League appearances this season, averaging a goal or assists every 79.8 minutes this term.

But can he play for England?

Born in Hammersmith, Olise is English born but has never played for the Three Lions at any level.

With a Nigerian father and a French-Algerian mother, Olise is eligible for four different nations, England, France, Nigeria and Algeria.

Olise has played nine youth international matches to date in his career, all of which coming for France. However, Olise was left out of France's provisional squad earlier this week.

Michael Olise has been incredible when he plays for Crystal Palace. Skill, pace, assists, goals. Let’s bring him in can play anywhere in support of Harry Kane and France obviously aren’t calling him up, if he plays like that in league imagine him with the quality of Foden, Kane, Bellingham around him - no disrespect to Crystal Palace.

Vicky Gaskin, Wirral: Who would you choose as Harry Kane’s understudy in the squad? Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins.

Well he could take both, Vicky, but this is a really interesting one. After the game against Belgium, when he scored, I would have gone with Ivan Toney because he looked so comfortable and more of a natural fit as a deputy for Kane.

Since then, however, he has not been at his best while Watkins played a huge part in getting Villa into the Champions League, so at the moment I’d go with him.
