On warm May afternoons it's impossible to say which points won or lost during the season were the difference to a title-winning or relegation-doomed season, but do you know what, some of them may have come on this cold December night.

Ruben Selles was just a couple of minutes away from starting his era at bottom side Hull with a win, while Neil Harris' era in the home dugout at The Den ended with a narrow defeat by Sheffield United, who lead the pack in the race for promotion to the Premier League.

QPR and Preston moved clear of immediate danger, leaving freefalling Oxford and Cardiff in the mire while West Brom remembered how to win, and reminded Frank Lampard of the job he has on his hands at Coventry too.

Mark your cards, we'll be back here on Friday night for what is shaping up to be a big encounter between Derby and Portsmouth in the battle to keep out of trouble at the bottom.

Thanks for your company tonight, we'll see you soon!

  2. Top of the tablepublished at 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    #bbcefl

    Championship top

The Blades are a cut above... again!

This has all the makings of a title race for the ages.

Their hard-fought 1-0 win at Millwall took Chris Wilder's men back above Leeds and means, for the first time in a couple of months, only two teams go into this weekend with the chance of sitting top of the pile come the end of it.

West Brom's drawing run is over, and their unbeaten run is up to a dozen games to move them back into the play-off places, with Watford missing the chance to go sixth themselves as they were held to a draw at basement-boys Hull City.

  3. 'Hopefully that will kick us on'published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    FT: West Brom 2-0 Coventry

West Brom's Alex Mowatt speaking to Sky Sports: "It's been difficult. We've not been getting the wins but we've not been losing.

"We just wanted to win the game and hopefully that will kick us on now and we can keep winning.

"They had good spells. I think they had some good chances as well. We were lucky none of them went in but we're just buzzing to get the win.

"Every game is difficult in this league, so we will go again on Sunday and hopefully get another win."

And despite plenty of draws, Albion are still right in the mix at the top end...

  4. Bottom of the tablepublished at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    Championship bottom

Hull City might have stopped their six-game losing streak but they remain bottom despite their point at home to Watford.

QPR picked up a useful cushion over the bottom five courtesy of their win over Oxford United.

But the big winners on the night were Preston, who are no longer even on this graphic, having won at Cardiff, who remain in the bottom three.

  5. 'We've wanted win for weeks'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    FT: West Brom 2-0 Coventry

West Brom striker Karlan Grant speaking to Sky Sports: "It's massive. We've wanted it for weeks and just buzzing to get the three points today.

"I thought we played well. They made it hard for us but it's a deserved win."

  6. Robins to replace Harris?published at 22:06 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    FT: Millwall 0-1 Sheff Utd

Neil Harris tasted defeat in his final home game in charge tonight.

The Lions legend will leave after this weekend's game against Middlesbrough.

We asked you who you thought should replace him on Millwall's revamped club page on the BBC Sport website and app.

    The overwhelming favourite... Mark Robins.

  7. 'A professional job'published at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    FT: West Brom 2-0 Coventry

    Tony 'Bomber' Brown
West Brom's all-time leading goalscorer on BBC Radio WM

West Brom have done a professional job this evening. We have complained that they haven't scored many goals, and they have gone and scored two and not conceded any.

Albion have knocked the ball around and kept possession when they have had to, and ground a great result out. These are not easy matches to play in, local derbies they are very difficult - take it from me.

There has been some super performances. I think everybody has played well and played their part.

A big win for West Brom and Frank Lampard tastes defeat as Coventry boss for the first time.

Alex Mowatt's deflected effort from distance after 11 minutes put the Baggies ahead but Coventry battled well and threatened an equaliser in the second half.

But Karlan Grant put the game beyond doubt with 15 minutes remaining with a fine individual goal, skipping through the Sky Blues defence and driving home into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

A second win in 14 games for Carlos Corberan's side but their 12-game unbeaten run isn't looking so bad after tonight and they're back into the play-offs.

Ben Sheaf heads over from six yards out for Coventry...

It's clipped across the face of goal and he is completely unmarked but can't hit the target.

That might just sum up the night for Frank Lampard's side.

  11. Hull 'too close to average again'published at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    FT: Hull City 1-1 Watford

    Mike White
    BBC Radio Humberside commentator

All the Tigers had to do was see the game out after they got the lead, to pick up their first home win since September and avoid a winless run of 11 games so far.

Watford are a play-off contending side but they are no great shakes, but Hull have been too close to average again tonight despite new management.

It is going to take more than a couple of days to turn this side around. It needs more quality, it needs something to give them a spark.

  12. Postpublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    West Brom 2-0 Coventry

West Brom are five minutes from just a second win in the Championship since 21 September.

It would be a huge three points to re-ignite their promotion push and they're heading back into the play-off spots as things stand.

    Can they see it out?

  13. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    QPR 2-0 Oxford

What a win for QPR and what a week it's been as they record consecutive Championship victories for the first time this season.

Sam Field's second half double did the damage and the Hoops pick up a deserved three points.

Oxford didn't really threaten and the hosts stepped it up in the second half to put a little more daylight between themselves and the bottom three.

  14. What you got Cov?published at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    West Brom 2-0 Coventry

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at The Hawthorns

It's not the first time in a game of football - and it sure won't be the last.

Team on top and looking likely to equalise, And then the opposition score out of nothing.

It will be hard to envisage Coventry coming back from this.

They did used to regularly salvage situations like this under Mark Robins. Let's see what they've got now.

Nine minutes added on at Loftus Road and we've played nearly eight of them. QPR cruising home here.

    Hull City 1-1 Watford

It ends all square after that late flurry of drama, which is probably about right.

Hull stop the rot with a first point in seven games, Watford pick up an eighth point on their travels, but both sides could easily have won this.

Chris Bedia's goal is worth a watch for its sheer calamity and replays suggested it actually came off his arm.

Rocco Vata's equaliser was the least Watford deserved for their efforts across the 90 minutes.

Positives for both sides to take, but work to do to put games to bed when they are there for the taking.

  17. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    Cardiff 0-2 Preston

Preston celebrate scoringImage source, Rex Features

It's all over and that's a first win for Preston for 10 games.

Cardiff had their chances and saw two cleared off the line - one from Yakou Meite and another from Perry Ng.

But it's the Lilywhites who take all three points after Calum Chambers diverted into his own net and Milutin Osmajic sealed the deal late on.

The Bluebirds are now without a win in six and in danger in the bottom three.

Sheffield United celebrate victoryImage source, PA Media

That's it. Sheffield United have seen out a tricky second half like, dare I say, champions would.

They return to the top of the table courtesy of Rhian Brewster's goal just before the break, a goal as ruthless as it was simple, and his first since October 2022.

Millwall had their chances and struck the woodwork twice but Neil Harris' reign at The Den ends with back-to-back home defeats, and no win in five.

GOAL: Cardiff 0-2 Prestonpublished at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    Milutin Osmajic (90+3 mins)

    Game over.

It's a hopeful long ball over the top by Preston and Cardiff defender Dimitrios Goutas completely fails to deal with it.

Milutin Osmajic sneaks in to steal the ball, skips round the keeper and slots it into the empty net.

A first goal since his return from an eight-game ban. Calamitous for the Bluebirds. Jubilation for the visitors.

  20. Postpublished at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December

    Hull City 1-1 Watford

Into FOUR added minutes at the MKM and it's the visitors who look the more threatening if we are to see a surprise winner.
