Europe would be an unbelievable return for Nottingham Forest this season - Morgan

The comparisons to East Midlands rivals Leicester are unavoidable.

The Foxes' 5,000-1 title win in 2016 was one of sport's greatest achievements, with Leicester having initially been one of the favourites for relegation after pulling off a great escape in the season before.

Claudio Ranieri's side won the league by 10 points and lost just three games. They were on 40 points after 20 games in 2015-16, the same total as Forest have now.

Leicester's success was built on Jamie Vardy's pace, the threat of Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton on the flanks and the energy of N'Golo Kante in midfield.

Wes Morgan skippered them to the title having joined from Forest in 2012 after a 10-year career at the City Ground.

"The last few games, when it's in touching distance, things get a bit twitchy, and you start thinking, 'Right, we cannot slip up'," said Morgan.

"Whereas before it was 'there's nothing to lose, we're doing great. Let's just keep going.'"

  2. Sutton's predictions: Arsenal v Tottenhampublished at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

    Chris Sutton predictions

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Arsenal have had a bad week and right now it looks like Tottenham have a better chance of winning a trophy this season than they do.

People are quite rightly pointing out that the Gunners are missing chances and, with Bukayo Saka out injured, they are just lacking that spark in attack.

Having said all that, maybe they will find it again here, because I think the way Spurs play will suit Arsenal.

By that, I mean Mikel Arteta's side can soak up pressure and counter-attack, and even without Saka or a recognised centre-forward, I think they will get chances in this game. It is whether they take them this time. I am backing them to stick a couple away.

Of course this derby is really important to Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham in their situation, but the expansive way they play means it is tall order to expect an unfamiliar defence and new goalkeeper to step up again.

I do see Spurs scoring, but they give up a lot of chances. Arsenal have to win this game to hang on in the title race, and I think they will.

We have heard from managers of both Arsenal and Tottenham before Wednesday's north London derby.

Mikel Arteta spoke about his concerns over the fitness of Gabriel Jesus, but stopped short of confirming reports that the Brazil striker had ruptured knee ligaments.

Jesus will be having further tests this afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou, meanwhile, spoke about how big their match at Emirates Stadium was for Spurs' season, as well as his disgust at some of the abuse he received from a minority of fans at Tamworth during Sunday's FA Cup win.

Forest fan since 1984 here. Absolutely loving this season, obviously. This club experienced miracles under Clough, and lightning has been known to strike twice sometimes. We are exactly where we deserve to be. Aided somewhat by not currently being in Europe so we get more rest. I'd love us to qualify for Europe this season and have a proper go at the FA Cup. Arsenal are faltering but Liverpool, Chelsea, and Newcastle will finish higher than us. To have done the Merseyside double and also beat Man Utd away has been an utter delight. In Nuno we trust. COYR!

  5. Nunez to miss Forest through suspensionpublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

Nottingham Forest v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Nottingham Forest will welcome back their first-team regulars after Nuno Espirito Santo made 11 changes for the FA Cup win over Luton.

Danilo came off the bench in that game for his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury on the opening day of the season, while Ibrahim Sangare is also nearing a return.

Liverpool are without Darwin Nunez due to a one-match suspension and Joe Gomez will again be absent with a hamstring problem.

Head coach Arne Slot has no other injury worries.

Former Liverpool and England international goalkeeper David James on Nottingham Forest: "Nuno has done fantastically well with this Forest side. They're the only team to beat this Liverpool side this season and if you look at when they first played each other at the start of the season at Anfield, that could of been a precursor for the form that Forest have been showing."

They are the final two news conferences on what has been a busy day of football news.

The intention was to be building up to tonight's match at the City Ground, where third-placed Nottingham Forest will host Premier League leaders Liverpool.

That was before the news that all Premier League clubs were deemed to be compliant with profit and sustainability rules for the latest accounting period.

We also brought you the sad news that former Manchester City captain and manager Tony Book has died, aged 90.

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira on rebuilding Wolves' confidence: "I think we need to have confidence inside of us. I don't believe in having a superman, we have 11 players, the other team have 11 players, so we have a chance.

"Even against the best team in the world we have a chance. If we play with energy, commitment and a team spirit, we will have a chance."

Forest are in the title race just as much as Arsenal are - likely a race for second. They are playing well, have no European distractions and a good squad with a solid plan. They will be challenging for the Champions League spots at the end of the season. Just hoping Newcastle are too!

When you look at a player and see that he's always smiling and happy, with him, it does not matter if he starts a game or comes off the bench. This is the type of personality that helps the team."

A final word from Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who says he would have "loved" to deal with the "10%" of the crowd at Tamworth who were "pretty unacceptable":

"Ninety per cent of the crowd [at Tamworth] were very good and enjoyed the banter," he said. "There was 10% who were pretty unacceptable. The stuff I heard was pretty vile and detestable, and getting things thrown at me, not a great experience, mate, but we’re expected to be the bigger person.

"I would have loved to have turned around and not been the bigger person in that moment, but you deal with it and go on."

Yes. For those saying "no", what part of being three points off first would *stop* them from being title challengers? They might not have the title experience or nous of Liverpool but that doesn't stop them challenging. It'd be superb, just like Leicester winning if it happened.

    Tom

In previous seasons where Liverpool been top at Christmas, we've thrown away the advantage in the spring with too many drawn games. We need a win at Forest tonight to keep them away from a title challenge.

    Chris, Chester

If Forest continue their form and get a win tonight then they definitely shouldn't be discounted from being a threat for the title, even a draw would do them. They've won more matches than anyone other than Liverpool and go into this having won their last seven games, would be foolish to discount them. With Arsenal's injuries at the moment, I bet Arteta is hoping for a Forest win!

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on new goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

Postecoglou seemed somewhat surprised by a stat in his news conference, that Kinsky was the first Spurs keeper in 100 years to keep a clean sheet in his first two games for the club.

The 21-year-old Czech stopper helped the club to a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg and 3-0 victory at Tamworth in the FA Cup.

"They have all been big games for different reason for him," said Postecoglou. "The Liverpool game goes without saying but it was a hell of a game for him up in Tamworth too. I thought he handled it so well.

"So far he has been really good at embracing the challenge we have thrown at him and I am sure he is looking forward to it tomorrow as well."

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on improving the club's league position of 12th: "With the position we are in in the league at the moment, irrespective of turning points, we need to start winning games and moving up the table. Whilst it is a massive challenge for us tomorrow night, there is an opportunity for us to do that."

Arsenal v Tottenham (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

More from Ange Postecoglou on the rivalry between Tottenham and Arsenal and what it means to him: "I felt it was intense from the moment I arrived but at the same time I've never tried to be disingenuous about this stuff and say 'this means the world to me' when I have literally just arrived.

"But you get the context of the game and what it means to the club, what it means to the supporters and also what it means for our season.

"From that perspective, right from the first time we played them I was well aware. A bit like me being up in Glasgow, you are well aware of what it means, well aware of the ramifications - both the positive and the negative.

"I have been big on it from the first game and this year is as big as they ever come, especially for us and our season.

"We need to start winning games in the league and there is no better place to start."
