Questions about Gabriel Jesus' injury and what plans Mikel Arteta might have in place to deal with his absence from the squad will no doubt dominate the Arsenal manager's news conference.

But the Gunners have the small matter of a north London derby to deal with, which comes on the back of disappointing home defeats in their EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle and Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup.

Can Arsenal get their Premier League challenge back on track against rivals Tottenham?

Arsenal 'need a greater contribution from all over' the team - Chris Sutton

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton says Arsenal don't necessarily need a number nine to win the title but they "need a greater contribution from all over the team."

Discussion around the Gunners lack of goals from open play and their decision to not buy and play with a traditional number nine is nothing new, but Sutton, speaking before rumours broke about the extent of Gabriel Jesus' injury, said "last season Arsenal found goals from all areas of the team".

The former Premier League winner with Blackburn told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club: "Is this just a little bit of an overreaction because Arsenal have gone out of the FA Cup?

"In terms of goal scoring then Kai Havertz's numbers are similar to at this stage last season but there are other areas of the team that haven't contributed as much.

"They lost Martin Odegaard for a spell and now Bukayo Saka, so I am not going to write Arsenal off at this stage."

  10. 'Cunha or Delap' - who could solve Arsenal's lack of goals?published at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

    Arsenal v Tottenham (Wed, 20:00)

    Theo Walcott
Former England forward on Monday Night Club

If you want the positives they are on the same points as this stage last season, they are more equipped for the Champions League because of the goals they don't concede, but there has been a change since Edu left.

When you see people like Edu leave, he was so important to Mikel Arteta and that's a big hole to replace. There's talk of Thomas Rosicky coming in to fill that void but I think that's a long way off. I think it has hit Arteta hard, having someone to lean on in a situation when he needed it.

They aren't out of the league but they need some help. If they need to test the water with Matheus Cunha or Liam Delap, it's different but they need to think out of the box.

When Arteta looks at his bench I always get the sense there is no trust in certain players. If you're Arsenal you should be competing to be in the first XI and I don't think there are gamechangers on the bench.

  11. Arsenal need a 'trade-mark number nine'published at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

    Arsenal v Tottenham (Wed, 20:00)

    Rory Smith
Football correspondent on Monday Night Club

Arsenal do have a lot of versatile forward players but none of them are necessarily poachers or finish that reliably. If you threw in Victor Osimhen or whoever as a trade-mark number nine then Arteta feels the build up and structure of the team would lose something.

It does look increasingly like that is the thing they are missing.

Arsenal are a system team and when it doesn't work and they can't find a way through, other than Saka and Odegaard, who is thinking I'm going to take this into my own hands? Against a team that is happy to absorb pressure they seem to run out of ideas.

Havertz can play as a nine, he scored the winning goal in a Champions League final, but he wants to play from the midfield, that's the system he came up in.

  12. Will Jesus injury force Arsenal to sign a striker?published at 09:09 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

Another question Mikel Arteta is certain to face in today's news conference is whether the club will now be in the market for a new striker.

That debate pre-dates Gabriel Jesus' most recent injury.

The Brazilian only recently returned to goalscoring form, ending a run of one goal in 20 games from the start of this season by scoring six in four, after bagging a hat-trick in Arsenal's EFL Cup win over Crystal Palace on 18 December.

Only three of his seven goals this season have come in the Premier League, while last season he only scored four in 27 league games.

Jesus' best ever season tally in the Premier League came for the Gunners in 2022-23, when he scored 11 goals in 26 games.

  13. City close in on Palmeiras' teenage defender Reispublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Palmeiras’ teenage defender Vitor Reis.

City have been in negotiations with the Brazilian club for a number of weeks and after some resistance, have finally made a breakthrough in talks the Premier League club believe will lead to 19-year-old Reis eventually joining them.

Palmeiras had hoped to keep Reis for next summer’s Club World Cup.

However, City sources believe if the deal is eventually concluded, Reis will join them immediately.

A Brazil Under-17 international, Reis has made 18 league appearances for Palmeiras.

A right-footed central defender, it is intended Reis will form part of a reshaping of Pep Guardiola’s squad that is also planned to include Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov, while talks are continuing with Eintracht Frankfurt over striker Omar Marmoush.

  14. How long will Jesus be out for?published at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

That is the key question, which will surely be put to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta in this morning's news conference.

It is unlikely that the Spaniard will be able to put a timeframe on it at this early stage, but Daily Mail reporter Sami Mokbel, external said that if the worst is confirmed then Gabriel Jesus would be out for the rest of the season.

The Brazilian missed four months of the 2022-23 campaign with a knee ligament injury picked up on international duty at the Qatar World Cup.

  15. What happened to Jesus?published at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

Gabriel Jesus was stretchered off in Sunday's FA Cup defeat at Emirates Stadium following a collision with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

The Arsenal striker was tracking back and came together with Fernandes as he stretched in an attempt to get to the ball first on the edge of the Gunners' box.

Fernandes demanded a penalty - or at least a free kick - but nothing was given by referee Andy Madely.

It quickly became apparent that Jesus had come off worst in what initially looked to have been an innocuous incident and the Brazilian forward played no further part in the game.

  16. Arteta to speak this morningpublished at 08:32 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

We will, of course, be hearing from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta from 09:30 GMT.

The Spaniard said he was concerned about Jesus' injury immediately after Sunday's defeat to Manchester United, acknowledging that the way he reacted and how he held his knee "did not look good".

"[It's a] big worry, that's my feeling," Arteta said.

"He had to come off on a stretcher with a lot of pain, touching his knee. It's not looking good.

"The worrying factor is the feeling that he had. When he had to come off and the pain that he was in."

Jesus previously spent a long period out with a knee injury picked up at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, missing four months of the 2022-23 season, but Arteta said after the game that this latest injury was his other knee.
