Lando Norris did get into the back of Max Verstappen which then bumped him into Oscar Piastri. Quite a difficult situation there, but I think Norris was perfectly in his right to go for it.

  4. Russell leads from Verstappenpublished at 13:09 BST

    Lap 3/62

It was a clean getaway from George Russell and the Mercedes man now leads Max Verstappen by over two seconds. Lando Norris is still out on track and is sitting in third, ahead of his team-mate Oscar Piastri.

    Lap 2/62

The opening corner tussle between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri has not gone down well with the Australian as he says on the team radio it wasn't very team-like. The replays show Norris may have tagged the Red Bull of Max Verstappen as he was making his way up the order.

More radio messages from Piastri, who says are the team just going to let Norris barge in to him.

Lando Norris has got a slightly broken front wing endplate by getting past Oscar Piastri, let's hope that doesn't affect his race.

A good start from Norris, a difficult one for Piastri.

George Russell has covered off the threat of Max Verstappen and leads out of Turn One. Lando Norris has been brave and has now made up two places by getting his elbows out, while his team-mate Oscar Piastri has dropped behind Norris and is now fourth.

But is Norris carrying front wing damage now?

David: Check my maths but Max scored about 96% of the Red Bull points total this year? They may as well save some cash and make just one car next year. Either that or design the second car to fit specifically whoever they choose to put in it.

I expect Max Verstappen to be eager to get in front of George Russell at the beginning of this race, using that goodness from the soft compound tyre off the line.

  12. Formation lappublished at 13:00 BST

The green intermediates can stay in the box for now. Slicks are the tyre of choice.

George Russell has opted to start on the mediums while Max Verstappen is the outlier of the top seven and has gone for the soft compound for his charge off the line.

Pole-sitter George Russell speaking to Sky Sports on the weather: "It's pretty unpredictable around here so I'm keeping an open mind. Obviously this is raining pretty hard now but it's also going to dry up quickly in this heat, so who knows what is going to happen."

On the start: "I think in normal dry conditions I'm not really expecting anything to happen. Now the rain is coming, we saw a bit of an interesting start here in 2017 or 2018 when it was wet.

"It definitely makes it a longer race and it's still going to be challenging to overtake dry or wet, but when the weather is unpredictable in races like this it does bring in a lot of unknowns and makes the strategy very difficult.

"Not what you would have chosen starting from pole, but I feel pretty chilled."

  14. 'Beginning of the race is going to be very exciting'published at 12:59 BST

It's going to be especially difficult given the fact it rained a couple of hours ago, the track is still drying.

I think the beginning of the race is going to be very exciting and maybe fraught with danger.

FIA official risk of rain is 30%.

  17. Race strategy: Singapore historically a one-stop racepublished at 12:55 BST

This has historically been a one-stop race, strategy defined by the long pit-stop time and difficulty of overtaking. But that seems less of a given this year for two reasons - a combination of an increase in the pit-lane speed limit and the changes to the track made last year.

Raising the pit-lane speed to 80km/h from 60km/h has cut the pit-stop loss time to 22 seconds, 11 under a safety car, and the removal of four corners towards the end of the lap has created a fourth zone for the DRS overtaking aid, which can now give as much as 0.9 seconds advantage per lap.

The fastest strategy is still predicted to be a one-stop on the medium and hard tyres, but that could change depending on the level of tyre degradation and the feasibility of overtaking. If degradation is high and it looks possible to overtake, there may be a temptation to go for new tyres.Equally, the character of the race will depend on how the leaders run it.

If George Russell or Max Verstappen keep the field compact, that will mean they are not pushing. If the field spreads, they are. Tactics change as a consequence.

The official F1 data says the McLaren has the fastest race pace, but McLaren don’t believe that to be true. They are struggling here relatively owing to circuit characteristics and the fact Red Bull and Mercedes are still developing their cars and McLaren are not.

Charles Leclerc was straight to the point after his seventh place in qualifying on Saturday, saying on the radio the weekend for Ferrari has been "****".

"I found it hard to push the car to the limit and on a street circuit this makes it even more of a struggle to put everything together, especially over a qualifying lap," said Leclerc.

The Monegasque driver has been a part of the podium celebrations here in Singapore in 2022 but today he'll be scrapping with his own team-mate Lewis Hamilton, title contender Lando Norris and Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli before he can put his hat in the ring for a top-three finish.

Lewis Hamilton, four-time winner in Singapore, outqualified Leclerc for the first time since the British Grand Prix to underline an upturn in form in recent races, but was "ultimately disappointed" in the result.

He was fastest in the first session and said he felt Ferrari had mismanaged the rest of qualifying.

"Q1, the car and tyres were feeling good but Q2 run one was fairly decent but then we are the last in the queue often and losing a lot of temperature in the tyres and every time we do that we fall further and further back. It happens every single weekend," said Hamilton, who is starting sixth on the grid.

"The guys on pole went out quicker with less waiting in the pit lane. It's an area we can improve on."

Beautifully sung national anthem, watched on by singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi and his brother, who is the spitting image of him. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is asked by Sky Sports whether the lights out will be a mixture of slick and intermediate tyres. "I guess it's going to be slicks," he says.
