Lando Norris led Oscar Piastri to a McLaren one-two ahead of Max Verstappen in an action-packed qualifying session at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Norris edged his team-mate by 0.022 seconds and Verstappen by just 0.046secs in a session that featured changing conditions and two red flags for big crashes.

The result gives Norris his third career pole, and McLaren a first one-two in qualifying since the 2012 British Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth for Mercedes behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz while team-mate George Russell was only 17th after he and the team fumbled a wet-dry first session.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who will start on the second row in third: “I tried, the whole weekend we have been a little bit behind, and I think that was also the case in qualifying.

“I tried to make it as close as possible but unfortunately just not enough, a bit difficult to pin point why that is, I would of liked a bit more grip but it’s not there at the moment.

“P3 is still very close but I just hope that for tomorrow the car is good tomorrow in the race and at least we can follow them and see what we can do there.”

On the battle with other teams: “I love competition but I like being on top of the competition. At the moment I feel like we are chasing and having a few more difficult weekends, I don’t back out of a fight but it’s just a tricky situation I guess.”

On the race tomorrow: “Let’s see, the last few races, especially the McLaren has been really good in the race even compared to qualifying. Today was a lot colder than expected I guess with the clouds and the rain, tomorrow is going to be quite a different day and I just hope that will help us.”

  4. 'Amazing result for the team' - Piastripublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 20 July

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who will start on the front row with team-mate Lando Norris: "It's cool to be here, especially when you get a result like this. I think the first one-two in qualifying for McLaren for a very long time.

"Very happy of course but I missed out by two hundredths, so you think of all the little things you could've done better. But an amazing result for the team.

"We had a bit of a tricky day on my side yesterday but it's nice to bounce back this morning and obviously this afternoon in quali. It wasn't easy - a a lot of decisions on the fly - but to end up with both cars on the front row is an amazing result"

  5. 'To end up on pole today is sweet' - Norrispublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 20 July

McLaren’s Lando Norris, who took pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix: “I am very very happy, not an easy qualifying, different conditions, always ending up on top, it’s the best part of it all.

“I’m happy especially for the team, a one-two is even better to see so congrats to the team.”

On the team being competitive: “We’ve already got confidence, so it’s not like we not a lot more of it or we are searching for it.

“I think we’ve come into this weekend and the last few and we’re happy. We know we can do a good job and we’ve got a good car to fight for pole and that’s exactly what we did today. It’s a great job by the team and we’ve been improving every weekend, to end up on pole today is sweet.”

On the race tomorrow: “We are in the best position for whatever the conditions throw at us, I’m looking forward to it. Two cars on the front row, we can control it from there so as long as we stay where we are, we will be happy.

“I’m expecting to [do well], if I don’t it’s not been a good day. The car is doing well, I feel like I’m driving well so it’s obvious what the aim is for tomorrow.

With that delay for the red flag for Yuki Tsunoda, there is little movement on the timesheets in these final moments. Although, Daniel Ricciardo does manage to lift his RB above his stricken team-mate to start P9.

Norris hasn't improved, he's half a second off. I don't think anyone is going to trouble the two McLarens here.

The man who will see probably the biggest opportunity here is maybe Oscar Piastri. There was nothing between the two McLaren drivers, he's got performance in that car.

Red flag, be gone. Drivers are just waiting patiently now for that green light. McLaren occupy the best places at the moment, with Max Verstappen - who won't be taking part in these final few minutes - sitting in third place.

    Go! Go! Go!
