Lando Norris will start on pole for today's race in the McLaren, he said: "It's still going to be a tough race, it was a bit of hard work yesterday but it's a lot more hard work today. I'm expecting a tough race, Max is going to be very quick, the Red Bull's probably have the best race pace, so we will keep our head down and work as a team because that's what we have to our advantage at the minute."

On team orders, he added: "We are free to fight, there will probably be certain parts of the race where it's not sensible and we will know that between us. We are starting alongside each other, we are racing drivers, we are a race team, we are here to race.

"We are free to race, that is something we have always done well, but we've always helped each other in the past and kept things clean and that is what we will do today.

"The aim is to try and finish one-two and get the win, but we also need two cars to finish the race, so just be sensible and do what we do like not making a big deal out of it.

"We are on the front row of the grid, it's our first front row as a team since 2012, it's a good achievement for us."

This is expected to be a two-stop race and McLaren, Max Verstappen and the Ferraris have exactly the same tyre allocation - two new sets of mediums and one of hards.

Don’t be confused by the graphics showing McLaren having only one new set of mediums; their ‘used’ sets have only been ‘scrubbed’ for a lap, and that is a choice aimed at achieving slightly better performance.Mercedes, by contrast, look to be favouring the hard compound, of which they have two new sets.

Aston Martin, back in the top 10 with both cars after introducing an upgrade, look like they might try the softs, which for most will probably not be the favoured tyre. The undercut - stopping first and gaining a place by going faster on fresh tyres after a stop - is powerful at the Hungaroring. Tyre management will be key - thermal degradation is high.

As ever, the risk in stopping too early is to run out of tyres towards the end of the stint. No one has done more than 10 or so laps on a set of tyres, so the second part of every stint is a journey into the unknown.

The undercut range is around seconds. A pit stop under green flag conditions costs about 21 seconds, 10 seconds under a safety car. DRS is worth 0.35 seconds a lap.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton will start the Hungarian Grand Prix in fifth, he said: "I'm hoping I can get past the Ferrari but if I can then I'm going to give everything to try and hold onto the McLarens.

"I think in true pace they are still one or two tenths ahead of us in the race, so it will be tough. We definitely can't fight in these conditions for a win, but if it rains then of course that changes things. I don't see any rain clouds anywhere near."

Pole-sitter Lando Norris says he has nothing to prove in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, despite not having won since his maiden victory in Miami in May.

Norris said a one-two on the grid with team-mate Oscar Piastri alongside him and ahead of championship leader Max Verstappen is “definitely once again a good opportunity [to win] for both of us and for us as a team to score some big points, and that’s the target”.

But he rejected suggestions that it was important to lay down a marker after challenging for wins in Imola, Canada, Spain, Austria and the UK but just missing out.

The Briton said: “Every single qualifying is important and every single race is important. It’s not all of a sudden I need to do it and prove my point - I don’t.

“We have done the best we could in every race. We have shown great pace and opportunities.

“I know we have missed out on some and we don’t need to go back into all that stuff.”
