  1. Postpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (9)

Really poor from Rory McIlroy with just a dink in from 70 yards but he left it miles short and had to settle for yet another par.

He should be looking at six feet from the flag from that range, but he's three times that far away and that four gets him no closer to Scottie Scheffler after his big mistake just behind.

  2. Postpublished at 16:25 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -15, Li -10 (8)

Will it be normal service resumed for Scottie Scheffler after that double bogey at the eighth?

He's in the semi-rough off the ninth tee, but only just.

Meanwhile, Li Haotong's tee shot goes left and ends up close to a group of spectators, who crowd around it like they've never seen a golf ball before.

  3. McIlroy 'aware of Scheffler slip'published at 16:25 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -10 (9)

    Kat Downes
BBC Radio 5 Live correspondent at Portrush

There was a big 'ooh' from the crowd after news of Scottie Scheffler's double bogey.

Rory McIlroy's eyes instantly flicked to the leaderboard.

  4. 'Nice to see a little chink in the armour'published at 16:23 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -15 (8)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

Everyone’s got a little excited. It’s game on here.

There’s still a long way to go but at least it’s made it a bit more interesting and it’s nice to see a little chink in the armour.

  5. Double bogey for Schefflerpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -15, Li -10 (8)

I did not see this coming about 15 minutes ago. You very rarely see errors like that from Scottie Scheffler.

It's a double-bogey six for the world number one and, with Chris Gotterup making progress up ahead, Scheffler's lead is back to four shots.

Meanwhile, Li Haotong's long, uphill birdie putt comes up a couple of feet short and he'll tap in for par, keeping him in a share of third place.

  6. Smashed itpublished at 16:17 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (8)

Brilliant drive from Rory McIlroy on the ninth, smashing it 352 yards to leave just over 70 to the flag on this par four.

He really needs to get this one close...

  7. Gotterup on the movepublished at 16:16 British Summer Time

    English -10, Gotterup -11 (9)

It's a case of giddy-up Gotterup as the American rolls in a birdie on the ninth to break out of that tie and take solo possession of second place.

Thr Scottish Open champion last week turns in a three-under 33 to sit on 11 under - with Scottie Scheffler in a rare spot of bother just behind him.

  8. Postpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -17, Li -10 (7)

Now then... Scottie Scheffler finds a bunker on the eighth and goes for the big shot out of it - his ball hits the lip of the sand trap and lands back by his feet.

He takes his medicine second time around and is in the middle of the fairway in three.

He'll probably hole out from there for par, the way he's playing.

  9. Postpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (8)

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

The crowd have been enjoying Matt Fitzpatrick's style of reading putts.

He lies flat on his stomach and presses his knuckles into the turf. Not quite Camilo Villegas levels of athleticism, but still unorthodox.

    "Let's see you do a push-up," a fan yells.

He didn't. He did make the putt though.

  10. Postpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -17 (7)

    Andy Gray
BBC Sport NI at Royal Portrush

When Scottie Scheffler was one back on Thursday I mentioned that the Jaws music was looming as he came through the elements and challenges thrown his way.

I think you're going to need more than a bigger boat to stop Scottie the shark today.

  11. Postpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -17 (7)

In answer to Oliver Wilson at 16:06 BST - Scottie Scheffler has gained 10.5 strokes in putting during this tournament.

That's almost three more than Oliver Lindell, the man who is second on that list.

  12. Birdie for Fitzpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time

    McIlroy -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (8)

Matt Fitzpatrick throws a dart at the flag on the eighth green to leave just four feet for birdie which he knocks in to join his playing partner and a host of others on 10 under.

Rory McIlroy, as per usual, can only hit it to 30 feet so has to settle for another par.

If we remove Scottie (who is absolutely incredible) from the leaderboard, it's very exciting for second!

  14. 'Scheffler doesn't seem to miss'published at 16:06 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -17 (7)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

I don’t know how many shots Scheffler has gained on the greens statistically but it’s an incredible performance.

He just doesn’t seem to be able to miss.

  15. Postpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -17 (7)

    Jonathan Bradley
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

It's been incredible to watch how Scottie Scheffler gets himself out of trouble in these past few days.

Largely his control has been supreme but on those rare occasions when he's left himself with something to save par, he's managed it.

  16. Another par save for Schefflerpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -17, Li -10 (7)

Yet again, the putter comes up trumps for Scottie Scheffler.

A bit of a chaotic par five for the world number one on the seventh, but he drains another 15-footer to stay at 17 under.

Li Haotong, apart from a chip that was short of the cup, did almost everything right on that hole and walks off with the same score as his playing partner.

  17. Birdie for Schauffelepublished at 16:03 British Summer Time

    Hatton -8, Schauffele -9 (9)

Xander Schauffele is up to nine under, strengthening his position inside the top 10, thanks to a birdie on nine.

Tyrrell Hatton has played his front nine in a level-par 36, another of those mid-range putts coming to rest at the edge of the cup.

  18. Postpublished at 15:59 British Summer Time

    English -10, Gotterup -10 (8)

Harris English missed out on the seventh when he missed a short putt but there's no mistake this time around with a nice three on eight putting him into the growing band of players in second on 10 under.

  19. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time

    Fleetwood -7 (67)

Tommy Fleetwood at The OpenImage source, Getty Images

Tommy Fleetwood receives a warm reception as he closes a fine round of 67 at the 18th hole.

Second last time we were here in 2019, he's going to be just outside the top 10 today.

But next year, he's back on home turf. Off to Birkdale we go.

  20. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time

    Scheffler -17 (6)

    Jonathan Bradley
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

Not to say it was a Ryder Cup atmosphere earlier but there were certainly a good number of "let's go Rory" shouts as Scottie Scheffler walked up the fairways.

Those have died off as that gap on the leaderboard grows between the world number one and the world number two.
