    Horschel -5, Rose -4 (13)

A bronzed Billy Horschel is quite clearly used to sunnier climes than South Ayrshire.

A clean swing of a nine iron and he's on to the green at the 13th and then sinks an awkward putt to take par.

Justin Rose stews for a while on the green, then follows Horschel with a par of his own.

  3. Bogey for Burmesterpublished at 18:53 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -2, Burmester -1 (14)

Dean Burmester loses a shot after missing the 14th green by a good 30 yards to the right!

From there he can't get up and down, which Scottie Scheffler manages although he'd only just missed the putting surface off the tee.

  4. 'Scheffler has to hang in there'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -2 (13)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup

I think in these next five holes, Scheffler’s really got to hang in there.

If he has a look at the leaderboard, he’ll see no-one’s really done anything this afternoon and he can just get in with even par or one under if he can sneak one birdie in.

    Cantlay +4, Schauffele -4 (15)

This pair are hitting into the teeth of the wind at the 16th, trying to somehow claw some scoring the stretch.

No chance of finding any greens in two with the wind swirling back in their faces but Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are well placed to attack with their third.

  6. Postpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 20 July

    Lowry -4 (12)

This is where things started to unravel for Shane Lowry.

    Plenty of time left though.

  7. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 20 July

    Brown -6 (12)

Can I just remind everyone Dan Brown missed the cut in seven of his previous nine events?

    Absolutely brilliant.

  8. 'Brown putting with so much assuredness'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 20 July

    Brown -6 (12)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on Radio 5 Live

Dan Brown is putting with so much assuredness.

Apart from anything else he takes no time, but then he hits it solidly. No doubt.

  9. Birdie for Brown, bogey for Lowrypublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 20 July

    Brown -6, Lowry -4 (12)

    We have a new leader.

Shame on anyone who thought Dan Brown couldn't go the distance - he's been superb today and has tucked that putt away confidently.

    Astonishing.

We might need to start dusting off those major winners on debut stats.

Ugly for Shane Lowry though as he ends up with another bogey and suddenly slips two shots back.

  10. Morikawa finishes uppublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 20 July

    Morikawa +2 (72)

Collin Morikawa couldn't keep his fine round going, dropping three shots on his way home to reach the clubhouse on two over for the tournament.

Players have come back from further behind the leaders in the final round to win The Open...

  11. Bogey for Schefflerpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -2, Burmester -2 (13)

First real error off the greens and first bogey of the day for Scottie Scheffler on 13, as he can only get his pitch from just off the front of the green to nine feet.

And since he's not made anything over six feet today the resulting miss is almost inevitable, and just what happens if you don't take your chances with the putter around here.

In football terms he's dominated possession but can't put the ball in the back of the net - and Royal Troon has just equalised very much against the run of play,

  13. Postpublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 20 July

    Brown -5, Lowry -5 (11)

Unfortunate for Shane Lowry as his approach into the 12th green hops the wrong way, hitting the green and trundling off the slope.

Maybe he was put off by playing partner Dan Brown's excellent second shot that landed four feet from the pin.

Brown will have that very shortly for the outright lead.

  14. Postpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 20 July

    Cantlay +4, Schauffele -4 (15)

Second hardest hole on the golf course for Xander Schauffele at the 15th and he's navigated it with the minimum of fuss.

A tremendous chip off the green rolls to within a foot and he cleans up for par.

    That could have been treacherous.

That's how it has proved for Patrick Cantlay - another bogey as a putt scuttles by.

The weather is not just affecting the players' ability to operate.

Radio 5 Live commentator Alistair Bruce-Ball is out following Justin Rose and Billy Horschel and his notes have taken a bit of a battering.

  16. Postpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 20 July

    Horschel -5, Rose -4 (12)

An inch. Maybe an inch and half. Billy Horschel has a birdie chance on the green at the 12th only to watch the ball agonisingly finish just wide of the hole.

"Wow," he says to himself as he crouches on to his haunches.

His playing partner Justin Rose, also now with his cap turned backwards, has just struck a solid tee shot on the 13th.

  17. Frustration for Rahmpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 20 July

    Rahm +2 (72)

Jon Rahm is muttering to himself trudging off the 18th green after carding a one-over round of 72, where he could just not get anything going.

He's not done too much wrong from tee to green, and he even managed to navigate his way around Royal Troon without going into a single bunker, which is half the battle.

But he's ranked down in 69th for putting in this round and that will tell you all you need to know.

The fact is, though, that he's seven shots back and could be a touch closer come the close of play, and if the weather's changeable again tomorrow then who knows...

  18. Postpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 20 July

Those lads who went out in the dry - and even a bit of sunshine - this morning and put low scores on the board are suddenly feeling very nice about life.

Thriston Lawrence and Sam Burns, who shot 65s earlier, are just two off the lead now, as is Russell Henley.

Major champions Adam Scott and Justin Thomas are on even par, which is a tie for 11th.

There are hundreds of fans who've decided they've had enough and are heading for the exits.

Four hours of constant rain can do that to you.

Thousands more are staying on though. Once you're wet I guess you can't get any wetter.
