    Riley -7 (5)

Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Quail Hollow

Definitely not how he [Riley] was trying to play that. It came out hot. It was a good lie but he got a flier.

It was probably eight to 10 feet past where he was trying to land it. Absolutely perfect.

Definitely a shot or two saved there.

  2. Riley chips in for birdiepublished at 20:39 British Summer Time 18 May

    Riley -7 (5)

That will do very nicely indeed for Davis Riley! The American chips in for birdie on the fifth.

He slaps his hip in disbelief. If it hadn't dropped straight into the cup without bouncing, he might have been staring at a bogey or worse.

Instead, he's now in second spot on his own.

  3. Par save for Schefflerpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 18 May

    Scheffler -11, Noren -6 (4)

Scottie Scheffler's not the best with the putter, but he's good enough to clean up hs par putt from five feet that even for the world number one must have been a nervy one.

Alex Noren's slipping backwards as he makes a bogey from the greenside bunker to drop to six under so he just needs to try and steady the ship now - which is easier said than done when you've only played one tournament in six months before this, and that was last week!

  4. Birdie for Brysonpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 18 May

    DeChambeau -5 (7)

    Bryson DeChambeauImage source, Getty Images

Bryson DeChambeau repairs the damage from his earlier bogey, his birdie on the par-five seventh set up by an excellent third shot from the bunker to within eight feet.

The eighth is a good chance to post another birdie, too.

  5. Postpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time 18 May

    Rahm -6, SW Kim -4 (5)

Kim Si-woo drops back to four under on the fourth.

But while his playing partner Jon Rahm cannot get anything going he is battling away on every single hole.

The Spaniard rattles in a superb par-saving putt from seven feet on the fourth and repeats the trick from an almost identical position on the fifth.

  6. 'It's so easy to keep making bogeys out here' - McKibbinpublished at 20:28 British Summer Time 18 May

    McKibbin +4 (73)

Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin reflected on an "indifferent day" with BBC Sport NI.

The 22-year-old shot a two over par 73 to finish on +4 for the tournament.

  7. Postpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 18 May

    Fitzpatrick -4 (7)

Matt Fitzpatrick is putting for an eagle on the par-five seventh. But it's a pure guessing game down the slope from the top-right side of that green.

His first effort from 70 feet rolls off to the right and he then can't convert the birdie opportunity from 10 feet.

  8. Postpublished at 20:26 British Summer Time 18 May

    Wallace -5 (8)

Three birdies and two bogeys for Matt Wallace today so far, and he just misses another birdie on the eighth, which will disappoint him given it's the short par four.

But the Englishman is just a birdie or two away from getting seriously involved in the tournament.

  9. Postpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 18 May

    Riley -6, Poston -5 (4)

Davis Riley has followed a bogey on the first hole with pars at the next three and he's in a share of third spot.

A par putt for JT Poston leaks wide though and he drops his second shot in the opening four holes, dropping back to -5.

  10. Postpublished at 20:23 British Summer Time 18 May

    Vegas -5, Bradley -3 (5)

Steady away now for Jhonattan Vegas who followed his opening bogey with four straight pars, while Keegan Bradley has parred three straight after a bogey-bogey start.

    Scheffler -11, Noren -7 (3)

Scottie Scheffler's long game is still struggling a bit as he can't quite put two good swings together as he follows up a crackerjack of a drive with another miss with an iron to find the bunker.

However, this is Scottie Scheffler we're talking about and he almost holes out for an unlikely birdie, but a tap-in par.

Imagine how good he'll be if he pieces his game together...

  12. Consecutive birdies for Niemannpublished at 20:20 British Summer Time 18 May

    Niemann -5 (15)

Joaquin Niemann clatters one off the flag and ends up with a birdie on the 14th and then almost does exactly the same as he bounces into gimme range on 15.

Back-to-back birdies for the man from Chile.

  13. Finau dropping backpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 18 May

    DeChambeau -4, Finau -3 (6)

Tony Finau's challenge for a first major is falling away. He finds the greenside bunker at the par-three sixth and can't get up and down in two.

Finau is playing alongside fellow American Bryson DeChambeau, who makes par to stay one over for his round.

Neither player in this two-ball has made a birdie in the first six holes today.

  14. Postpublished at 20:16 British Summer Time 18 May

    Scott -5 (7)

Australia's Adam Scott is rolling back the years to feature so prominently near the top of a leaderboard on the final day of a major.

The 2013 Masters champion is at one-under par today and going along quite nicely at present.

  15. English sets clubhouse targetpublished at 20:12 British Summer Time 18 May

    English -6 (65)

I mentioned Harris English before and he has just completed his round to set the first realistic clubhouse target.

What a back nine it was from the American, home in 31 to set the pace at six under par.

Just the five shots behind Scottie Scheffler - but he is a share of third.

  16. Birdie for Kimpublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 18 May

    Rahm -6, SW Kim -5 (2)

Kim Si-woo reclaims a shot on the third with a glorious approach to nine feet.

He rattles in the putt to put himself at five under. Aged 29, he is yet to finish a major inside the top 10 in 31 attempts. Could that be about to change today?

  17. The results of our winners' pollpublished at 20:09 British Summer Time 18 May

    Fairly conclusive, that.

And the world number one has immediately showed why so many of you are backing him.

  18. Bouncebackabilitypublished at 20:07 British Summer Time 18 May

    Scheffler -11, Noren -7 (2)

We've said plenty of times that Scottie Scheffler is the king of the bounce back - and he's just shown us why as he curls in a 14 footer for a birdie on the second to instantly level up his card for the day.

Alex Noren found the bunker with his second shot, but he plays a lovely escape and rolls in the putt to save his par - that was crucial if he wants any chance of sticking close to Scheffler.

  19. Postpublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 18 May

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Quail Hollow

There are certainly birdies out there but the first hole is playing very tough.

It is scoreable but with the gusts picking up to 20mph this afternoon and greens firming up, there could be excitement to come.

  20. Bogey for Fitzypublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 18 May

    Pavon -3, Fitzpatrick -4 (6)

Matt Fitzpatrick fritters another shot away on the long-par-three sixth after missing the dance floor.

Having raked in two long putts for birdie he can't drop in a seven-foot putt for his three.
