  1. Postpublished at 18:43 BST 19 July

    McIlroy -8 (17)

Rory McIlroy gets a stroke of luck off the 18th tee as his drive bounds forward towards the bunker but just manages to avoid the sand.

Chance of hitting it close with his second.

  2. Postpublished at 18:43 BST 19 July

    Westwood -5 (69)

Lee Westwood's card had four bogeys on his front nine - and he was out in 40.

Then, remarkably, he came home in 29.

A birdie putt at the last would have broken The Open record for nine holes but his effort from distance just grazed the cup.

    Breathtaking finish from the 52-year-old.

  3. 'Unusual push for Scheffler'published at 18:42 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -13 (13)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

I think that was a slight push. Scottie came out of that putt looking as if he didn’t quite start it on the line that he wanted, which is unusual today anyway.

  4. Bogey for Fitzpatrickpublished at 18:41 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -13, Fitzpatrick -9 (13)

A lovely chip from Matt Fitzpatrick to within five feet gives the former US Open champion a good chance to save par.

Scottie Scheffler for birdie? Just by the right edge. Nearly.

Now the attention is back on Fitzpatrick. He hits it - stays up off the left edge.

    Fitz back to nine under.

  5. Par for McIlroypublished at 18:40 BST 19 July

    McIlroy -8 (17)

Rory McIlroy is an emotional guy so a penny for his thoughts after that little interaction with his fans on 17. If they could've sucked that ball into the hole it would have flown in, but his nice effort from 33 feet just missed the target.

I'm struggling to think of anything similar to that though, on a Saturday, even for a player at a home Open - it's more like a Ryder Cup atmosphere with the guttural, desperate cheers following his every swing of the club.

  6. Postpublished at 18:40 BST 19 July

    Fitzpatrick -10 (13)

    Jonathan Bradley
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

There's a lot of support out here for Matt Fitzpatrick today, including a couple of giant masks of the Englishman peering out of the big crowd.

Those cheering him on were imploring that ball to hold on the green but to no avail.

  7. Postpublished at 18:36 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -13, Fitzpatrick -10 (12)

To the 13th, where Englishman John Parry made a hole-in-one earlier today.

Scottie Scheffler hits his tee shot first and leaves himself 15 feet for birdie.

Matt Fitzpatrick is just over the back of the green with a lot more distance to cover.

  8. What a scene!published at 18:35 BST 19 July

    McIlroy -8 (16)

Oh this is like the good old days at The Open here as Rory McIlroy is engulfed by the crowd after digging out a wedge from just 87 yards which lands on the green - to a huge cheer from his people.

It's not close, probably 30 feet away, but who cares? It's not about the shot here, it's about the Royal Portrush fans having a moment with their hero, their Grand Slam champion and one of their favourite sons.

Incredible noise from incredible scenes after he plays the shot as he strides through an ocean of well-wishers that conjures up memories of Opens from a bygone era as fans chased the final groups down the 18th.

    Wonderful.

    Hatton -9 (14)

The frustration is starting to show for Tyrrell Hatton, who is playing some unbelievably consistent golf but can't get a putt to drop for love nor money.

One birdie, one eagle, the rest pars for the Englishman.

  10. Bogey for Lipublished at 18:31 BST 19 July

    Li -9 (13)

Li Haotong at day three of The Open, PortrushImage source, Getty Images

Well, the jinx strikes again as just after mentioning that Li Haotong had only made one bogey all week he makes one on the very next hole!

And it comes with him missing his par saver from just four feet - the commentator's curse is a strong one....

  11. Westwood's birdie train continuespublished at 18:31 BST 19 July

    Westwood -5 (17)

Yet another birdie for wily veteran Lee Westwood, this time on the 17th. That's six in eight holes!

He has been the hottest player on the course for the 90 minutes and we've not really paid him any attention!

At five under par, he's too far back, but what a performance he's put in.

  12. Postpublished at 18:31 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -13, Fitzpatrick -10 (12)

About 12 feet left for Matt Fitzpatrick to make birdie on the 12th but no, sir. His putt lips out and he pars the hole, as does Scottie Scheffler.

That's a surprise, given the low scoring on this hole throughout today.

  13. Fore!published at 18:29 BST 19 July

    McIlroy -8 (16)

Oh dear, Rory McIlroy just gave that a bit too much on the 17th tee and the result from a faster swing is a slice out to the right, and his ball sails into the crowd!

They've been cheering him along all day and that's how he repays them!

Hard to make birdie from there.

  14. Postpublished at 18:28 BST 19 July

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

Great scenes around the 16th with crowds 12-15 deep and a packed grandstand behind the green.

They were treated to some short-game wizardry from the Masters champion.

I reckoned 64 was his target and it's still in play.

  15. 'Hatton has driven the ball brilliantly all day'published at 18:28 BST 19 July

    Hatton -9 (13)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Tyrrell Hatton's driven the ball brilliantly well all day, he's hardly missed a shot.

He’s played some really terrific iron shots and these pin positions are difficult to get close to.

He’s given himself opportunities, not quite holed any at this stage, but there’s a lot of golf to play.

  16. Postpublished at 18:26 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -13, Fitzpatrick -10 (11)

Back to the par-five 12th, where Matt Fitzpatrick has overshot the green in two.

Scottie Scheffler found a fairway bunker off the tee and can only blast it forward about another 100 yards.

The American's third finds the green and, on what is the course's easiest hole, he'll have about 25 feet for a birdie four.

  17. Bogey for Bobpublished at 18:26 BST 19 July

    English -7, MacIntyre -6 (14)

Not a good time for Bob MacIntyre to make a bogey but the 14th has been the most bruising hole at Royal Portrush this week.

He's dropped a shot after finding the greenside bunker and he'll slide a shot further back.

  18. Rose finishes with a flourishpublished at 18:22 BST 19 July

    Rose -5 (68)

Justin Rose on day three of The OpenImage source, Getty Images

Arms aloft, Justin Rose takes the acclaim from the crowd around the 18th green.

He's just finished by putting from off the green fully 48 feet to the hole and the widest of grins splits the 44-year-old's face.

Finishing birdie-birdie gives him a round of -3 and leaves him at five under for the tournament.

Another good day for the veteran who surely will be going to the Ryder Cup in September.

  19. Postpublished at 18:21 BST 19 July

    Hatton -9 (13)

Tyrrell Hatton has holed less than 20 feet of putts in total through his first 13 holes, showing he's regularly been knocking in short ones for par.

Of course, that number is a little lower than it might have been because he holed an approach from about 140 yards for eagle on the seventh.

  20. Solid parpublished at 18:20 BST 19 July

    McIlroy -8 (16)

That's one heck of a par save from Rory McIlroy for the position he found himself in off the tee, so he keeps just about in touch as he heads to the 17th.

With his power he can lash a drive right down the hill on 17 so you have to think that he needs a birdie here given the way Scottie Scheffler's playing.
