We'll be here for a little while longer with more reaction to the third round, and some videos of the best moments.

  2. 'Scheffler was just majestic'published at 19:52 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -14 (67)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

Scheffler’s round just exuded patience. He got off to a slow start, not quite hitting it close, not quite taking his chances and then from hole five and six onwards it was just majestic.

He just keeps executing his shots, shot after shot, fairway to green.

And when he did make a couple of slight errors, he got out of jail and gave Matt no momentum really and his putting let him down.

  3. Postpublished at 19:49 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -14 (67)

Three rounds in the sixties for Scottie Scheffler.

Only four players have managed that this week - Scheffler (68-64-67), Li Haotong (67-67-69), Tyrrell Hatton (68-69-68) and Nicolai Hojgaard (69-69-69).

  4. Scheffler ends with four-shot leadpublished at 19:46 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -14 (67), Fitzpatrick -9 (71)

A par on 18 for Matt Fitzpatrick means he'll be in the penultimate group on Sunday after a level-par 71 today. He's in third place on his own.

And it's a safe two-putt par on the last for Scottie Scheffler, who goes round in 67 without a bogey on the card.

Scheffler has one hand on the Claret Jug with 18 holes left to play.

  5. 'It was so much fun'published at 19:43 BST 19 July

    McIlroy -8 (66)

Rory McIlroy says he had 'fun' in his third round at The Open, praising the atmosphere at Portrush:

"It was incredible. It was so much fun. I rode my luck at times, but it was an incredible atmosphere out there. I feel like I've given myself at least half a chance tomorrow."

On his eagle at the 12th: "It's one of the largest roars I've ever heard on a golf course, it was a really cool moment."

  6. Postpublished at 19:42 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -14, Fitzpatrick -9 (17)

Matt Fitzpatrick plays first from the 18th fairway and sends his approach to within 25 feet.

Scottie Scheffler follows him to almost the exact same spot.

Game face on from the world number one as he strides towards the green, putter in hand.

  7. Postpublished at 19:41 BST 19 July

    Li -10 (69)

    Andy Gray

Compared to some of the names at the sharp end of the leaderboard, Li Haotong is a relative unknown at this stage.

He's greeted with warm applause as he walks onto the 18th, and again when he sinks his final putt.

He hadn't made a cut at the Open since 2018. Now it looks like he'll be partnering Scottie Scheffler on the final day.

    It's some story.

  8. Bogey finish for Lipublished at 19:41 BST 19 July

    Li -10 (69)

A closing bogey for Li Haotong after he found the bunker off the tee - an odd choice of driver there for Li given he's been excellent at finding fairways and that club just made it a bit tougher.

Still, at 10 under he's in the final group tomorrow as things stand along with Scottie Scheffler.

  9. 'Fitzpatrick will be really frustrated'published at 19:39 BST 19 July

    Fitzpatrick -9 (17)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

I think Matt is going to be really frustrated. I think he’s played well enough to have certainly hung with Scottie and maybe even pick up some shots on him. He just hasn’t been able to get it over the line.

He hasn’t been able to get the ball in the hole. A few too many mistakes and every time he got going, there was a momentum change from either Scottie or a mistake from Matt.

I think he will be frustrated considering he has not played badly at all.

  10. Any hope of stopping Scheffler?published at 19:36 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -14, Fitzpatrick -9 (17)

Barring a complete capitulation on the 18th, Scottie Scheffler will be leading The Open heading into the final round.

In one sense, there's hope for the field. Only one man - Tiger Woods - has ever won The Open while world number one.

However, Scheffler has won his past nine tournaments when holding the outright lead after 54 holes.

The very definition of a "good front-runner".

The American crashes his tee shot straight down the fairway on 18.

  11. Bogey for Fitzpatrickpublished at 19:33 BST 19 July

Matt Fitzpatrick can't get up and down from that awkward spot near the greenside bunker and he drops a shot.

Fitzpatrick is now five shots off Scottie Scheffler's lead and two behind second-placed Li Haotong, who is up ahead of the final group playing the 18th.

  12. Hatton ends eight underpublished at 19:31 BST 19 July

    Hatton -8 (68), R Hojgaard -6 (70)

Tyrrell Hatton on day three of The Open at PortrushImage source, Getty Images

Tyrrell Hatton posts a three-under-par 68 but it could have been three or four shots better than that if his putter been a little hotter. So many efforts from 20-25 feet that were close but not close enough today.

The Englishman will start tomorrow's final round six shots off the lead if Scottie Scheffler pars the last.

Rasmus Hojgaard bogeys the last to end six under, the same score as his twin brother Nicolai. Might they be playing together on Sunday?

  13. Postpublished at 19:27 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -14, Fitzpatrick -10 (16)

Matt Fitzpatrick's second shot is from a horrible spot. It dribbles down towards a greenside bunker - but stops right on the edge of it. A tricky chip coming up.

Scottie Scheffler is on the green after going left off the tee.

  14. Postpublished at 19:25 BST 19 July

    Hatton -8 (17)

Only three groups left on the golf course now, as the shadows start to lengthen.

The weather conditions have been magnificent today, it must be said, and the sun still shines over Royal Portrush as Tyrrell Hatton sends his approach to the 18th green.

Slightly overhit - he'll have about 45 feet for a closing birdie that his play today really does deserve.

  15. Birdie puts Li into secondpublished at 19:22 BST 19 July

    Li -11 (17)

Right now, China's Li Haotong is the nearest challenger to Scottie Scheffler after he drained a 20 footer on 17 for a birdie to progress to 11 under.

He was in the rough off the tee but hit a nice second, and an even nicer third to continue his fine championship so far.

Just the two bogeys all week for Li so far.

  16. English joins McIlroy at -8published at 19:22 BST 19 July

    English -8 (68), MacIntyre -6 (70)

Harris English has not managed to finish off with a birdie as his eight-footer stays up.

He's into the house at eight under par. Joining him, but a further two shots back, is Scotland's Bob MacIntyre who never quite got going today.

  17. Scheffler goes four clearpublished at 19:19 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -14, Fitzpatrick -10 (16)

Matt Fitzpatrick is about 50 feet from the hole and he hits his putt about 48 feet. The line was great, just a tiny amount more needed on the power gauge.

Now then, Scottie Scheffler - in!

Remarkably that's his first birdie of the back nine.

He's four ahead of the rest now and playing metronomic golf.

Can anyone stop him lifting that Claret Jug tomorrow evening?

  18. Postpublished at 19:15 BST 19 July

    Hatton -8, R Hojgaard -7 (17)

Pars for both of these two on the 17th.

Tyrrell Hatton had the chance of a 20-footer for a three but no joy for the Englishman.

  19. Postpublished at 19:15 BST 19 July

    English -8, MacIntyre -6 (17)

Chris Gotterup and Rory McIlroy share the clubhouse lead as it stands but they could be leapfrogged very shortly by Harris English who has wafted in a beautiful second shot.

He'll have eight feet to get to nine under par.

  20. Postpublished at 19:14 BST 19 July

    Scheffler -13 (15)

    Jonathan Bradley
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

I thought Scottie Scheffler might beat that birdie attempt to the hole on 15 there.

It's all quite serene out here with the final group.

The crowds after Rory McIlroy finished have not filtered back down the course and, of course, those roars from elsewhere around Royal Portrush have stopped too.
