A list of major champions in 2024

    Some year for the USA.

It is the first time Americans have won all four men's majors in a season since 1982.

The US has also supplied the winners for each of the past seven.

Jon Rahm’s Masters win of 2023 is fading into the distance for those of a European persuasion.

    Still, there's always the Olympics...?!

Xander Schauffele major finishes in 2024

He is the only player with top-10 finishes in each major this season - and he's put together quite the resume.

Before winning the US PGA Championship in May, there were fears he was not able to close out tournaments.

Those worries have been emphatically consigned to history.

Dan Brown had an incredible major debut, and was speaking to Andy Stevenson:

"Pleased overall I suppose. I didn’t play the front nine well enough which is why I am not a little further up . A lot of positives and hopefully I can come back soon and do it again."

    On considering giving up:

"I think I need (this week) as well. I had an injury with my left knee which I took seven weeks out.

"Score wise it wasn’t there so nice to have a good result under my belt again after four weeks of a bit of a struggle."

Lawrence slips as Schauffele birdies to take lead

Xander Schauffele taking the lead on the back nine seemed like the turning point - as after winning the US PGA Championship in May he's now a superb front runner, as he showed again today.

  9. 'Doesn't hit any bad shots'published at 18:36 British Summer Time 21 July

    Lowry -4 (68)

Shane Lowry on champion Xander Schauffele: "You need to hole everything on a day like today, especially to beat someone like Xander, who's in the form he's in.

"It looks like he's kind of half running away with it again. He did that on me at the PGA, and he's done it again today.

"He just doesn't really hit many bad shots, does he? I went there two back at the PGA, and I felt like I shot a decent score, and I wasn't anywhere near him.

"He's obviously good when he's out in front. Now that he's got one, it looks like he's going to get another one."

  10. Silver lining for Rosepublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -7 (67)

Justin Rose will be disappointed, but at least finishing in a tie for second means he gets straight into next year's Open at Royal Portrush having had to qualify this year.

  11. Horschel finishes with three in a rowpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 21 July

    Horschel -7 (68)

We enjoyed watching Billy Horschel playing with Justin Rose yesterday and he's just poured in a terrific birdie putt at 18 to join his friend in a share of second place.

Like Rose, there's a tinge of regret in the popular American's eyes but he did everythiing he could today.

Huge respect too for Thriston Lawrence who somehow emerges with a par to finish in solo fourth.

  12. 'It's going to hurt for a few days'published at 18:33 British Summer Time 21 July

    Lowry -4 (68)

Shane Lowry after shooting a three-under 68 to finish in sixth: "I just wanted to go out and give myself a chance today. I promised Neil [Manchip, Lowry's coach] I'd do one thing and go out and fight for every shot, and that's what I did today. Unfortunately, it's not good enough, and it's very disappointing. There's no two ways about it.

"I had a great chance of winning this Open, and it's going to hurt for a few days. But onwards and upwards and onto the Olympics and try to win a medal for Ireland."

On whether it has been a positive experience: "How could you not look back on it positively, a chance to win The Open? Obviously the critics and whatnot will say that I probably should have won from where I was yesterday afternoon, but it's not easy out there. It's not easy to win tournaments like this.

"I did everything I could. Unfortunately, I came up short. Hopefully over the next five to 10 years I give myself another few chances in tournaments like this and get one more."

    Horschel -6, Lawrence -6 (17)

This is shaping up to be an excellent finish for Billy Horschel who is on to the 18th green in two.

Thriston Lawrence has inadvertently produced the most creative bunker escape of the week as he crashes his shot into the face and watches it rebound behind him onto the fairway.

  14. Henley home in 69published at 18:28 British Summer Time 21 July

    Henley -5 (69), Burns +6 (80)

Russell Henley has finished up four shots behind Xander Schauffele after par on the final hole sees him home with a round of 69.

A bogey-free round, but not enough birdies from Henley.

Playing partner Sam Burns, meanwhile, bombed on the back nine as three bogeys and two double bogeys saw him card 80.

  19. Xander Schauffele wins the Open!published at 18:23 British Summer Time 21 July
    Breaking

    Schauffele -9 (65)

He was king of the near miss, but Xander Schauffele played Royal Troon perfectly this week, and even in the final round started solidly then picked his moment on the back nine to scamper clear and leave the field trailing in his wake.

A final round 65 proved far too good for the rest, and after making what was a tremendously difficult course look pretty easy at times, he's a fully deserving Open champion.

  20. Another birdie for Horschelpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 21 July

    Horschel -6, Lawrence -6 (17)

Billy Horschel is on the charge. He'll be wondering where this was a few holes earlier as he pockets a second straight birdie.

Eerie quiet around the 17th as Thriston Lawrence misses a birdie putt of his own.

These two are still set for excellent top-five finishes.
