Keegan Bradley, the new US Ryder Cup captain, is one of the first to congratulate Xander Schauffele as he disappears behind the grandstands and heads to the recorders’ tent.

Xander Schauffele can't quite make his three, but he taps in for a four, a round of 65 and he'll be the Open champion in a few minutes.

What a round of golf from the American.

Justin Rose does make a closing birdie, accompanied by a huge roar from the crowd, but that'll only be good enough for second place.

    Catriona Matthew

What a feeling for Schauffele to walk on there. Standing ovation from everyone. It is just the amazing feeling to know that two putts and you've got your hands on that jug.

  4. Postpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 21 July

    Horschel -5, Lawrence -6 (16)

Fair play to Thriston Lawrence and Billy Horschel as they take aim at the 17th green.

Both have beasted this gnarly par three and will have promising birdie putts - Horschel from inside five feet.

  5. Postpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 21 July

    Henley -5 (17)

Russell Henley has played a steady hand today but he's not quite been able to find that extra gear.

Two birdies so far for the American, who watched another glimmer of a chance go begging at the 17th.

  6. Raise the cappublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -6, Schauffele -9 (17)

Xander Schauffele hits the green, as does Justin Rose, and now the champion elect can raise his cap to the crowd as they applaud him onto the green.

The American gets a rousing reception as well, not quite enough to raise a full smile as he's still in business mode and thinking about finishing this off with a three.

  7. 'Lawrence deflated'published at 18:11 British Summer Time 21 July

    Lawrence -6 (16)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

You can sense the excitement and the expectation up around the 18th fairway and green.

Possibly a little deflation back here around the 16th. Thriston Lawrence has fought the good fight this afternoon.

He’s just not been able to match the magnificence of Xander Schauffele.

  8. Birdie for Horschelpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 21 July

    Horschel -5, Lawrence -6 (16)

Gutsy from Billy Horschel as he pings a fabulous third shot into the 16th green.

He gets a birdie to join Russell Henley in joint fourth.

Thriston Lawrence looks to the heavens as his 45-foot birdie attempt comes up two revolutions short.

  9. Postpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 21 July

    Richard Winton
    BBC Scotland at Royal Troon

Bit of a strange feeling this. We’re all around the 18th green, waiting to receive the new champion, yet there are still a couple of groups behind who could conceivably spoil Xander Schauffele’s party.

  10. Off down the lastpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -6, Schauffele -9 (17)

Xander Schauffele finds the 18th fairway and then sets off for what is the best walk in golf as he's got a healthy enough lead not to know a par will do him just nicely.

Justin Rose will be kicking himself a bit as he walks down the last - he's not played too badly at all but just hasn't got the big putts to drop today.

  11. Scheffler closes with double bogeypublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 21 July

So then Scottie Scheffler, 27 feet for bogey after that dreadful tee shot.

Great pace but it's not dropping and he finishes with a second double of the round.

It's been a terrific week for Dan Brown, ranked 272nd in the world, and it's a merited top-10 finish for the Englishman despite dropping a shot at the last.

  12. One more to go...published at 18:06 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -6, Schauffele -9 (17)

Xander Schauffele two putts for par and stays on nine under for the tournament and six under for his round, so he's on course to shoot 65 here to win the Open.

He also shot 65 to win the US PGA Championship in May so would join Jack Nicklaus as the only two players to do that twice - with Schauffele doing it in the same year!

  13. Postpublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -6, Schauffele -9 (16)

Justin Rose's putt has the look of one that could be about to drop as it tracks all the way - but it's just another near miss. He's had a few of those today.

Scottie Scheffler has dropped in the dirt on the 18th and as he flashes it forward it nearly hits playing partner Dan Brown.

A miserable final hole for the world number one.

  15. Postpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -6, Schauffele -9 (16)

Xander Schauffele does exactly what you'd expect him to do on the long par-three 17th and just finds the heart of the green.

He hits a slightly better shot than Justin Rose who is a couple of feet further away and he lets out a bit of an angry growl at that one - as he must think he needs a birdie here to stay in the contest.

You can't imagine Schauffele will drop more than a shot on the last, if any.

  16. 'One hand on the Claret Jug'published at 17:57 British Summer Time 21 July

    Schauffele -9 (16)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup

That was a great birdie. Schauffele had to be standing on the tee thinking 'birdie and I could have a hand on the Claret Jug', and he has now.

  17. Schauffele closing in...published at 17:55 British Summer Time 21 July

Xander Schauffele slides in his birdie putt to get to nine under and stretch his overall lead to three - with Justin Rose staying three behind as he also makes a four.

Schauffele now has a three-shot lead with two holes left to play.

He's six under for his round today. Too good.

  18. Postpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 21 July

    Horschel -4, Lawrence -6 (15)

Oof, a fine effort from Billy Horschel as he takes aim from 30 feet at the 15th but it kisses the edge and stays up.

Par too for Thriston Lawrence, who has not been able to muster a response after losing his lead with a bogey at the 12th.

  19. Round of 68 for Lowrypublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 21 July

    Lowry -4 (68), Scott E (71)

Shane Lowry is the clubhouse leader at four under. He finishes with a par on the 18th after missing a potential birdie chance.

Lowry may well look back at his third round yesterday and think what might have been.

In tough conditions at Royal Troon the Irishman started the third day the leader at seven under, but a round of 77 left him with too much to do today.

Playing partner Adam Scott never really got going on the final day as he shot 71 to finish even for the tournament.

    Brown -1, Scheffler -3 (17)

    That'll give us all hope.

World number one and six-time winner this season Scottie Scheffler has just topped his tee shot on 18 straight into the gorse in front of the tee box.

He looks as astonished as the rest of us.
