  1. Bounceback birdie for Brownpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 21 July

    Brown -3, Scheffler -2 (2)

Solid effort from Scottie Scheffler for birdie but it's slightly left. Par.

Can Dan Brown get his shot back?

Darn straight again. Excellent from the debutant and back to -3 for the tournament.

  2. 'What we're seeing of Brown is like an iceberg'published at 14:17 British Summer Time 21 July

Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Over the last 10 years clearly Dan Brown has become a really accomplished golfer, grinding it out on the PGA EuroPro Tour, and going to qualifying school - all these things that we don’t see.

It’s like an iceberg - all that stuff that we are not seeing has contributed to what we are seeing here.

A booming drive down the par-four seventh, a pitch to within four feet, a birdie putt.

Jon Rahm is looking ominously good. Two off the lead now.

    Brown -2, Scheffler -2 (1)

Very nice from Dan Brown at the second as he lofts his approach shot pin high and again to 11 feet, this time for birdie.

The world number one actually looked in a spot of bother after a horrid kick off the fairway dunked him in the rough.

Wizardry though as he pings to 15 feet for a birdie chance of his own.

  5. Comeback on the cards?published at 14:15 British Summer Time 21 July

    Burns -3, Henley -3 (14:15 BST)

    Sam BurnsImage source, PA Media

Sam Burns began round two at five over par and in 96th. Now he's in joint second.

According to golf guru, Justin Ray, the worst 18-hole position by an eventual winner in men's major history is a share of 84th. Steve Jones at the 1996 US Open.

Burns' opening 76 would also be the highest first round score by an Open winner since Walter Hagen in 1924.

    If he wins.

A solid start for Shane Lowry who follows up a par at the first with another at the the par-four second after sinking a slightly tricky putt.

The Irishman gives a nod to the crowd. He's three shots off the lead and will be looking for a bit of momentum now.

  7. Bogey for Jordanpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 21 July

Matthew Jordan in the sand again just off the second green - after almost holing out on the first he can only get this one to eight feet, and he misses the par putt to drop a shot.

  8. 'Horschel and Rose captivating to watch'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 21 July

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

In all the years I have been watching and covering The Open, the weather was awful yesterday, but the golf was absolutely gripping. It’s been demanding. It’s been really testing for them and it’s made fools of them at times.

You don’t want to see them struggle in impossible conditions but you want to see these players tested - and they were.

Horschel and Rose just gritted their teeth, got on with it, fired off each other and it was absolutely captivating to watch.

  9. Rose really wants this onepublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 21 July

Rose makes crowds roar on 18 with brilliant par

If Justin Rose doesn't win the Open today, it won't be for the lack of trying - as we saw last night, the Englishman really wants that Claret Jug.

Rose tees off alongside Xander Schauffele with both of them finding the short stuff down the fairway.

  10. Bogey start for Brownpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 21 July

    Brown -2, Scheffler -2 (1)

This'll test Dan Brown's nerves as he lands his third shot on the green but still 11 feet to save par.

After closing bogey-double bogey yesterday, he could do with a settler here.

However, he misses and slips a further shot back.

A short second shot from Scottie Scheffler leaves him too much for birdie, so it's par for the world number one.

  11. Olympians assemble!published at 14:05 British Summer Time 21 July

    Rose -3, Schauffele -3 (14:05 BST)

The only two Olympic golf champions around are paired together this afternoon at Royal Troon - with Rio winner Justin Rose and Tokyo champion Xander Schauffele hoping to add a Claret Jug to the gold medals.

Schauffele had been knocking on the door at the majors for a couple of years and finally broke through at this year's US PGA Championship, so this will hold no fear for him.

As you’d expect, keeping big numbers off the card has been key this week, and Rose has been better than anyone as he’s dropped shots at just four of his 54 holes played so far - with Schauffele not too far behind with six.

I've always thought that Shane Lowry looks like the landlord of a pub in a pirate's haven

Shane Lowry would be right up there for a golfer I'd love to have a beer with.

Possibly even drunk out of a Claret Jug??

  13. Terrible triple for Thomaspublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 21 July

    Jordan E, Thomas +3 (1)

Just a nightmare start for Justin Thomas, who was out of bounds with his first tee shot, in the bunker with what was his third shot and then ends up rolling a putt for a six right up onto the edge of the hole but just refuses to take a dive into the darkness.

That's a seven for Thomas who has has a mixed relationship with this front nine - playing it in 33 and 31 on Thursday and Saturday, and that awful 45 on Friday. Who knows what'll be today...

  14. A birdie to finish for Bobpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 21 July

    MacIntyre +9 (74)

A lovely way for Robert MacIntyre to finish - with a birdie on the last.

After winning the Scottish Open last week, and despite a difficult few days on the Troon links, it'll be a week he'll never forget.

He was playing alongside fellow leftie Phil Mickelson in the final round and Mickelson finished +11 for the tournament after a 76 today.

  15. Postpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 21 July

    Jordan E, Thomas E

How has that not gone in from Matthew Jordan? It's an exquisite splash out of the greenside bunker on the first that looks destined to roll in but defies gravity by hanging onto the edge of the hole.

  16. Postpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 21 July

    Brown 3, Scheffler -2

Following the pure Scottie Scheffler tee shot can't be easy and Dan Brown has flunked his out wide at the first.

It looks like he's landed it in some short grass so will probably be OK for his second shot.

Naturally, Scheffler has smoothly cut his usual swathe down the middle of the fairway.

  17. Postpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 21 July

    Lowry -1, Scott -1 (1)

Shane Lowry chips towards the green at the first as he looks to create an early birdie chance. The ball stops and it looks good, only for it to suddenly roll backwards into the bunker.

The Irishman rolls his eyes, but a few moments later successfully chips out the sand to leave himself with a simple putt for par.

Adam Scott, however, picks up a birdie to join his playing partner at one-under par.

  18. 'Late starters won't get it easy'published at 13:56 British Summer Time 21 July

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on Radio 5 Live

It feels like the scoring is going to get a little bit bunched. It feels like some of the scoring already is a bit hot out on the golf course, and this breeze is getting a tad stronger.

It is forecast to get up to 67 or 17 miles per hour and it feels like that already, to be fair. I don’t think the late starters are going to get the easiest of it at all.

  19. Postpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 21 July

    Brown 3, Scheffler -2 (13:55 BST)

If you're backing the Scheffler horse, a note of caution, he was 78th out of 80 for putting stats yesterday.

Last season, he was famously dogged by the flat stick and it arguably cost him a similar-looking streak to this season.

Should a few putts start dropping today, then maybe his name is indeed on the Claret Jug.

  20. The inevitability of Schefflerpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 21 July

    Scheffler -2 (13:55 BST)

    Scottie SchefflerImage source, PA Media

It's not felt like Scottie Scheffler's tournament yet.

Or has it just felt inevitably like it?

At times, 2024 has been a story of 100+ golfers whack balls around for four days - and then Scheffler wins.

He's the first to win six tournaments in a season since Arnold Palmer in 1962.

Palmer won The Open that year to make it seven - at Royal Troon.
