There are times when you can feel a bit dirty about golf, given all the money and the greed and everything that’s been going on in the game, but at its core there’s that integrity, sportsmanship and camaraderie and we saw all that.

We saw everything that was good about this game today, the drama it can generate, the brilliance of the shots.

Also the terrible shots that we saw that are reflective of the unique pressure that comes with golf.

That for me has just made that the ultimate golf tournament.

"Your determination during this round, and this entire journey has shown through, and now you’re a part of history.

    "Proud of you!"

Wonderful words from fellow career Grand Slam member Gary Player on X:"I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Rory McIlroy on his historic win at the Masters and completion of the career Grand Slam.

"The drama of today capped off with his play-off victory was simply meant to be. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my admiration for Justin Rose, who embodies the true spirit of a gentleman in our game.

"This is one of the rarest and most difficult achievements in all of sport, something only now six golfers in history have ever accomplished. We are proud to add Rory to our exclusive club and no doubt he has set the standard for his era.

"To win all four major championships takes unwavering perseverance and the courage to overcome adversity time and time again in the face of immeasurable pressure few have ever experienced. Rory showed true grit today and also through the entire tournament.

"It was 11 years ago when Rory first started the final leg of his career Grand Slam journey. And throughout this time, he’s carried himself with class, led with principle, and played with passion.

"For him to finally don the Green Jacket in golf is a moment to be celebrated by fans around the world. Rory has made his mark on history, and all of us who love this game are incredibly proud.

"Well done, my friend. Welcome to our club."

A birdie kept him only one shot in front and, after missing a par putt on the 18th, he had to go again in a play-off with Justin Rose, who made an outrageous 10 birdies today.

A marvellous second shot at the 18th green on the first play-off hole set up McIlroy's moment.

    This time, he took it.

He made a huge error to dump in the water at 13 and cough up a three-shot lead with Justin Rose on the march.

    And then he did this.

    What on earth?

But it would have been too simple for him to eagle that.

That double bogey cost him the lead and suddenly he was behind Bryson DeChambeau.

But a gritty first nine hauled him back in front and then there was this moment on the 10th where it suggested everything was going right.

We're limited in the number of clips we can show.

But I'll do my best to sum up what was quite the evening.

    Starting with this.

A double bogey at the first.

So much has happened over the past four days but given Rory is talking about his family, we couldn't miss a chance to show you this again.

This was little Poppy McIlroy drilling home a dead-eye putt from 25-feet at the Par Three contest on Wednesday.

Dynamite. Maybe she'll be here in her own right one day.

More from Rory McIlroy as he thanks his nearest and dearest:

"And last but certainly not least, over to my left my family, my team. They've been on this journey with me the whole way through.

"They know the burden I have carried to come here every year and try, try and try again.

"The one thing I would say to my daughter Poppy is never ever give up on your dream. "Keep coming back, keep working hard and if you put your mind to it, you can do anything. Love you.

"It's an honour of a lifetime to be standing here. I've dreamt about this moment for so long and I can't to be here again next year, in Scottie's position, hopefully putting the Green Jacket back on myself!"

"I’d also like to thank all the volunteers and the staff this week. The running of this golf tournament is not a small task, and everyone puts their heart and soul into this for one week in the year, so I just want to say to everyone thank you so much.

"It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be here as a player and obviously I can’t wait to come back for many years to come now.

"The patrons – it’s such a unique event. The no-phones policy makes everyone so present and so into what we’re doing out there on the golf course.

"It’s just an absolute pleasure to play in an atmosphere like we played in today so thank you so much."

Having had the Green Jacket placed on his shoulders in the Butler Cabin for TV, now they get to do it all again for the trophy presentation.

Here's what Rory McIlroy has to say:

"First of all, I want to thank chairman Fred Ridley and all the members. This is by far the greatest golf tournament in the world.

"I’m from a place that I might get criticised for saying that but I go back to watching this tournament on the weekend with my father when I was seven or eight years old and watching Tiger Woods do what he did in 1997.

"That was my inspiration to try to become what I am today. To think that I am up here wearing one of those Green Jackets is honestly a dream come true.

"My dreams have been made today."

My colleagues banned me from saying this earlier but whisper it quietly... the majors in 2025 really suit Rory McIlroy.

The US PGA Championship is at Quail Hollow where he has won four times, including last year.

The Open Championship is at Royal Portrush - round the corner in golfing terms from his home in Northern Ireland.

And the US Open is the tournament he has statistically been best at recently - finishing runner up in consecutive years.

    Win all four in 2025?

    Thumbs...

Rose also had some nice words for his long-time friend McIlroy, revealing what he told the new Masters champion on the 18th green.

"I just said, listen, this is a historic moment in golf, isn't it, someone who achieves the career Grand Slam.

"I said it was pretty cool to be able to share that moment with him.

"Obviously I wanted to be the bad guy today, but still, it's a momentous occasion for the game of golf."

    Rose -11 (66)

This is the second time Justin Rose has lost a Masters play-off.

Eight years ago, he was pipped by another European Ryder Cup team-mate, Sergio Garcia.

"It's definitely tough, but I bounced back pretty well from that, too. I went on to be world number one after that so I used it to my advantage," said the Englishman.

"Last two majors I've played I've come up in second place, but it's exactly what I'm trying to do with my career at this stage.

"It's more evidence that I'm doing some really good work."

  20. Rose takes solace from 'unbelievable' final roundpublished at 01:02 British Summer Time 14 April

We've also just heard from Justin Rose, who finished Masters runner-up for the second time in his career.

The 44-year-old Englishman says he can "take solace" in fighting back to force a play-off after being well out of the picture for most of the final day.

"Today was an unbelievable round of golf," said Rose, who hit a six-under 66.

"If I look back at yesterday, I played unbelievable golf and the putter went stone cold on me.

"Today I just really began to feel that confidence come back with the putter, which is unbelievable.

"Ten birdies on a golf course I thought was playing quite tricky, greens were firm and crusty, but with that came a few mistakes here and there."
