Rory McIlroy claims his fifth major title 11 years after his fourth - and that 11-year gap is the joint most of all time in between major victories.

Henry Cotton, Julius Boros, Hale Irwin, Ben Crenshaw all had to wait over a decade between their major wins, as did Tiger Woods when he claimed the 2019 Masters after his 2008 US Open victory.

"But history has been made and Rory has joined golf’s most elite by completing the Grand Slam.

"The Green Jacket is finally his."

More from McIlroy on the play-off win against Justin Rose, speaking about his wonderful second shot into the green:

"I had two yards less than I had in regulation and a flatter lie as well so I knew a three-quarter gap wedge was going to land into the slope and come back.

"So it was a good number and I just needed to make a good committed swing.

"I made one at the right time."

More from Rory McIlroy on what this victory means to him: "I would say it was 14 years in the making. Going out with a four-shot lead in 2011 and feeling like I could have got it done there.

"A lot of pent-up emotion came out on the 18th green. A moment like that makes all the years and all the close calls worth it.

"I want to say hello to mum and dad back in Northern Ireland (chokes up). I can't wait to see them next week and can't wait to celebrate with them."

  9. 'So proud of being able to bounce back'published at 00:44 British Summer Time 14 April

More from McIlroy on the rollercoaster final day: "When I hit the wedge shot into the creek on 13 I felt I did a good job of bouncing back.

"The double bogey at the first - I was really nervous going out. It was almost as if the double bogey calmed my nerves a little bit and got me into it.

"All week I responded to setbacks and that's what I'll remember. I'm so proud of that and being able to bounce back."

Well, didn't that final round just sum up Rory McIlroy's entire career in the majors, a microcosm of his search for glory.

A dodgy start (2011 Masters) followed by some brilliant stuff (four major wins) and then just not being able to get over the line (11-year major drought) but ultimately he's managed to get the job done.

A round of resilience, perseverance and refusal to give in, as the great Chumbawamba put it - he gets knocked down, but he gets back up again.

And at the end of it all Rory McIlroy will be getting his Green Jacket.
