The final word goes to European captain Suzann Pettersen who acknowledged her side have a mountain to climb to get back in the contest:

“We were faced with quite a big challenge last year. We have done it before and we can do it again. It’s going to take a massive effort but I know we can do it.

“We gave a good effort but the Americans played great. I feel like they had all the putts rolling their way and I don’t feel like we’ve had any momentum.

"We have a massive job ahead of us [but] anything is possible. Last year was a good example. It took a lot out of us to get the job done from where we started but there are so many points left to play for.”

  4. 'A really good day' - Lewispublished at 22:26 British Summer Time 13 September

    USA 6-2 Europe

Team USA captain Stacy Lewis, reflecting on a dominant opening day: "It's been a really good day. I saw a ton of good golf and it played out the way we were hoping. I am really happy with the pairings we were able to put out - players produced some great shots, some great scores and got us a ton of points."

On what learned from last year's showing in Spain, when USA drew 2-2 with Europe in the fourballs: “Just having some more balance in the fourballs. The way our team is at the moment, fourballs is not our forte.

"We put some extra focus on that and also on the energy. At times last year, we were kinda flat. We needed to make sure with our energy and you certainly saw that Megan [Khang] and Nelly [Korda] skipping out of the tunnel on the first tee."

    Coughlin/Schmelzel v Pedersen/Stark - USA win 3&2

Twelve hours ago, Sarah Schmelzel and Lauren Coughlin had never hit a shot at the Solheim Cup. Now they have two victories from two sessions.

They have been speaking about how winning in the foursomes earlier helped them take a second point in the fourballs.

"It just calmed the nerves," said Schmelzel. "You get it out of your system, that anticipation of what it's going to feel like and how you're going to play.

"We both settled in well this morning and came out this afternoon playing really aggressive and wanting another point. We really believed in each other."

"Sarah played unbelievably," said Coughlin. "I was just trying to play and make pars so she could be free and rolling.

"We have a really great team and we had a lot of fun this week. We figured that if go out there and have a good time, Figures if go out there and have a good time, then anything can happen."

USA captain Stacy [Lewis] has done a great job. She’s been really trying to inspire the girls in the week of 9/11 and doing a visit to the Pentagon. Barack Obama has also been here.

In the past 12 months - it’s not been 24 months remember - the US girls have the real determination to win this year.

Europe knew it was going to be difficult.

    Coughlin/Schmelzel v Pedersen/Stark - USA win 3&2

Lauren Coughlin rattles in a curling birdie putt at the 16th to seal victory for her and American colleague Sarah Schmelzel over Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark.

The USA end day one of the Solheim Cup with a commanding 6-2 lead.

  9. 'Pumped each other up'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 13 September

    An Lee/Zhang v Grant/Hull - USA win 5&4

Rose Zhang and Andrea LeeImage source, Getty Images

Rose Zhang and Andrea Lee have been speaking to the television cameras after turning on the style to beat Charley Hull and Linn Grant 5&4.

"Andrea and I had so much fun together," said Zhang. "In the beginning, we held on but never lost that confidence in each other. We fought hard and it was nice to see the putts go in and to hole some shots. I was shaking when her shot almost went in[at the 14th]!"

"I got off to a slow start," added Lee, "but Rose is so solid and I knew she'd be right there. She hung in there for us and then I was glad to make a run at it from the ninth hole.

"We pumped each other up all day. We supported each other and played really great all day. Nice to have a finish like that."

  10. Stark misses birdie chancepublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 13 September

    3UP Coughlin/Schmelzel v Pedersen/Stark (15)

Maja Stark sees a crucial putt for a birdie at the 15th just snake away to the left when it seemed destined to slip down the hole.

Lauren Coughlin has a chance to win the match for the USA with a birdie putt of her own, but it kisses the lip of the hole as it whizzes past.

    The hole is halved

Eight under par for the final six holes for Andrea Lee and Rose Zhang in that round.

That's some incredible golf - and it's little surprise they accelerated away from Charley Hull and Linn Grant, who did nothing wrong.

  13. Plotting hole locationspublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 13 September

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport in Virginia

While I was by the 14th green earlier an official sauntered on and divided the green in two with a tape measure.

She then marched 15 paces from the tape to her right and plonked down a spray can.

Then she marched seven paces further to the edge of the green. And paced it back again. Then counted out five paces to the back of the green. She repeated this a couple of times, with minor adjustments to the positioning of the spray can.

Then she sprayed a small spot on the green. A hole location for Saturday, presumably. She then picked up her tape measure and drove off down the fairway.

  14. Another point for USApublished at 21:56 British Summer Time 13 September

    An Lee/Zhang v Grant/Hull - USA win 5&4

So Team Europe concede the eagle to Andrea Lee and that leaves Linn Grant and Charley Hull, both off the green, needing to find the hole to keep the match going.

Only option is to be aggressive and Grant is, but her ball skips way past the flag.

Charley Hull takes out her putter - it's abut 35 feet. Off it goes but never threatens the hole.

    Another point for the USA.

  15. Out the sand in stylepublished at 21:53 British Summer Time 13 September

    3UP Coughlin/Schmelzel v Pedersen/Stark (14)

"You're playing like I do!" bellows a member of the crowd to Maja Stark after she joins team-mate Emily Pedersen in the bunker at the 14th.

Both players chip out the sand impressively - as does Sarah Schmelzel - while Lauren Coughlin almost eagles the hole after striking the pin.

Birdie putts apiece means it's honours even.

  16. Postpublished at 21:52 British Summer Time 13 September

    An Lee/Zhang v Grant/Hull (13)

It's Team USA's day all right - WHAT a shot from Allison Lee.

She's carried the bunker from way over 200 yards at the 14th, seen it land on the green, skip and then shave the hole as it rolls a few feet past.

The rest of the US players following along a few feet behind erupt in celebration with captain Stacy Lewis jumping to her feet in surprise.

That will almost be a kick-in eagle and, you have to think, another point in the bag for the home team.

Thwack, Charley Hull meant that and it's a terrific drive from the Englishwoman down 14.

Remember, she was on the first tee at 12pm in the opening group for the foursomes in the first session and looks as focused as ever coming down the stretch.

Can she find something to dig Europe out of this?

  18. Grant keeps Europe alive in final matchpublished at 21:40 British Summer Time 13 September

    4UP An Lee/Zhang v Grant/Hull (13)

It's pretty hard when your opponent is in immaculate touch on the green.

If it's not Rose Zhang draining long-range putts, it's Andrea Lee who has flashed her birdie effort in.

That pounds the pressure on Grant to hole from 15 feet and bosh, it's in. She celebrates with an understated fist pump.

  19. Postpublished at 21:37 British Summer Time 13 September

    4UP An Lee/Zhang v Grant/Hull (12)

The American team are perched around the 13th green, Nelly Korda among them, watching as Charley Hull's clever chip from the rough comes up slightly short.

A prolonged look to the heavens from Hull but Linn Grant retains a birdie chance here.
