An early chance for Europe to get some blue on the board as Anna Nordqvist lines up a birdie putt from nine feet.

There's a firm fist pump and a wide grin as she rolls it in.

    Terrific start for Europe.

Fearless approach play at the second from Megan Khang who sees an aggressive iron shot finish a matter of inches from the hole to gasps from the partisan home supporters. USA team-mate Nelly Korda finds the far side of the green.

Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire both hit tee shots into the rough but manage to make the green. Birdie chances for he Anglo-Irish pair.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is absolutely jam packed with fans now which is a far cry from first thing this morning.

Beth and Jill, who have travelled from Indiana and South Carolina, spent two hours getting from the parking area.

“Everything is fine now but it was a bit of a nightmare before. There weren’t enough buses for fans,” says Beth.

Bill and Pam, who live just over Lake Manassas, had no such problems but said,”the car park is five miles away, we’ve heard there were no buses and it’s not like you can walk in from there.”

    Hall/Maguire v Korda/Khang A/S (1)

Leona Maguire has a chance to win the first hole with an eight-foot birdie putt but she just misses with a slightly nervous effort and, like Nelly Korda, has to settle for par.

The opening hole of the fourballs is halved.

    Al Lee/Thompson v Nordqvist/Sagstrom (17:20)

Mr Brightside by The Killers rings out around the first tee - there are no 'Quiet Please' paddles in this corner of Virginia.

Eager eyes from the crowd too as the second fourball gets under way.

Two Europeans on the fairway, one American in the rough, the other in athe bunker.

    Korda/Khang v Hall/Maguire (17:05 BST)

Leona Maguire safely finds the green with her approach shot.

No such luck for Georgia Hall, who chips out of the bunker but then finds the sand again just next to the green.

Megan Khang overhits the green by some distance with a wild iron, but American compatriot Nelly Korda is on song.

There is some serious experience in this fourball - albeit none who played in the foursomes session.

US great Lexi Thompson has already said she's finishing with golf at the end of this season and was whipping up the crowd earlier.

For Europe, 37-year-old Anna Nordqvist has also seen it all over the course of nine Solheim Cups.

Speaking of former president Barack Obama.

There is actually a putting green at the White House which Obama made full use of during his time in office.

President Dwight Eisenhower, another big golf fan, had the green installed on a lawn near the West Wing in 1954.

The eagle-eyed among you will also spot in this picture, from 2009, Joe Biden in the background as well.

    Korda/Khang v Hall/Maguire (17:05 BST)

Megan Khang and Nelly Korda both hit the fairway with their tee shots, and then break out into a dance as they make their way down the first hole.

There's certainly a swagger, confidence and freedom about the US team after the foursomes.

  10. Fourballs under waypublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 13 September

    Korda/Khang v Hall/Maguire (17:05 BST)

"Are you ready for some more golf?!" bellows the master of ceremonies, Dave Johnson, at the first tee as he introduces the first pairings in the fourballs.

He is given a huge roar by an excitable crowd.

Leona Maguire tees off first and lands it straight down the middle of the fairway. No such luck for Georgia Hall, who finds the bunker.

Well, well, talk about an honorary starter.

Former US president Barack Obama, a member at this course, is out to get the fourballs under way - to the delight of the crowd.

Megan Khang and Nelly Korda both got the crowd going as they bounced out towards the tee box and danced away but the roar for Obama was something else.

Maja Stark and Emily PedersenImage source, Getty Images

Europe's only winning duo from this morning, Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark are heading back out this afternoon.

    They've been talking to Sky:

"We were playing great and knew we were playing better golf than them but we made a few mistakes," said Pedersen of the pair's slip from four ahead after five holes to a nervy finish.

"We just said to keep playing the way we have been playing and we would go on."

On why they have make a good pairing: "We’re both equally crazy, very similar personalities. Can both pump each other up. We just click really well. We’re good friends and we play good golf."

For her second Solheim Cup, Maja Stark agreed, claiming her third win in five matches: "It was a lot of fun. I was way less nervous this year than last year and it's a nice feeling.

"We know we can play really well and that was a nice first round to get a bit of excitement."

An Anglo-Irish partnership will kick off the fourballs for Europe in the form of Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire.

There's value in getting every player out on the course on day one and both captains Stacy Lewis and Suzann Pettersen are making sure that's the case today.

Each of the four that missed out this morning will be on the course in the fourballs shortly...

  17. Dominant start for USApublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 13 September

    USA 3-1 Europe

    Friday Foursomes

A fast start for the USA, who have won three of the last four foursomes sessions in the Solheim Cup - in a format that for years Europe had the upper hand in.

At least for Suzann Pettersen the 3-1 deficit is a point more than Europe managed last year after the opening session, when the USA produced a 4-0 clean sweep in Spain.

Dragging that back at home is one thing, doing it on the road is a different story, so that point from Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark could be huge.

Work to do for the visitors though as we go into the afternoon fourballs.

  18. Europe finally get a point!published at 16:34 British Summer Time 13 September

    Ewing/Kupcho v Stark/Pedersen 2UP (F)

Nothing crazy happens, America miss the lengthy putt and Europe finally get a point on the board.

Maja Stark and Emily Pedersen dominated that for most of the match, after racing into a 4UP lead after five holes, but credit the Americans for digging in and dragging it out all the way to the last.

  19. Europe closing in on a pointpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 13 September

    Ewing/Kupcho v Stark/Pedersen 1UP (17)

It's looking bleak for Europe at 3-0 down, so they really need to win this point, and it looks like they'll get it thanks to Emily Pedersen jamming an approach in tight on 18.

America are on the green but miles away and they need to win this hole to take something from the match. Unless something crazy happens here it's looking like 3-1.

  20. US win third pointpublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 13 September

    Vu/Schmelzel v Ciganda/Grant - USA win 3&2

    Never in doubt.

Two-time major champion Lilia Vu becomes the third American to win a point on the 16th hole today as she tidies up from four feet.

The Americans lead 3-0 with one hole left to play in the foursomes.
