Summary

  1. McIlroy misses birdie chancepublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy E, Fleetwood E, Thomas E (3)

Rory McIlroy had a light-hearted chinwag with Justin Thomas en route to the green at the third but they are soon down to business.

McIlroy is half an inch away from a birdie putt but ends up tapping in for par.

Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood also make par.

  2. Hatton into the top 10published at 16:02 British Summer Time 17 July

    Here comes Tyrrell.

Hatton has picked up another birdie, this time at the fifth and he trundles up to two under par.

    Fine start for the Englishman.

The fourth turned into a riot for Bryson DeChambeau. Well left, then well right, and two duffed chips before a more composed up and down. The big lad isn’t impressed, grousing away to himself.

  4. Air shot & a double for DeChambeaupublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 17 July

    DeChambeau E, MacIntyre -1, Rose E (3)

Was than an air shot from Bryson DeChambeau? He has to play it baseball style with the ball hung up in the rough on the big humps that line the fourth hole, but the side arm swing he produced resulted in little to no contact with the ball.

So he tries again, and this time just tops the ball down the slope a bit. Trouble here as the American finally get the ball in the hole for a double bogey six.

The last time Shane Lowry walked up the 18th at Royal Portrush for the Open, he was able to savour the moment as he prepared to sink his title-winning putt.

It's not been quite as triumphant today, but he's in the mix and you can't win the Open on day one.

Cue the Jaws music, Scottie Scheffler is also right there.

There are huge cheers for all three players, and this might be the most popular group after the McIlroy, Fleetwood and Thomas trio.

  6. 'Lowry hung in there, like all champions do'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry -1 (70)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Lowry's hung in there, birdied the 17th.

He got going nicely and then a few mistakes and frustration.

Like all champions do, they get it done.

Scottie only one off the lead when he's playing like this off the tee. Others should be worried.

  8. Lowry signs for a 70published at 15:58 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry -1, Morikawa +3, Scheffler -3 (F)

A rousing reception for Shane Lowry as he knocks in for par at the last and he ends a mixed bag of a day at one under and just three off the lead.

He started off like a train, hammering drives and striping laser-like irons, but then struggled a bit around the turn before picking up a late par to finish under par.

All in all that's probably the score he deserved and if he ends the day just three back that'll be just fine.

  9. 'Rory will be delighted'published at 15:56 British Summer Time 17 July

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

I don't think he could do any better than that with the wind off the right. He'll be delighted.

  10. McIlroy on the greenpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy E, Fleetwood E, Thomas E (2)

The third hole is a par-three and Rory McIlroy is straight on to the green with his tee shot. Some promising signs after a nervy start.

  11. Who doesn't love a good queue picture?published at 15:55 British Summer Time 17 July

Rory McIlroy may be moving onto the third at Royal Portrush but I reckon some of these folks might just make it into the grandstand at the 18th for his arrival here in about four-and-a-half hours' time!

Meanwhile on that green, the world number one Scottie Scheffler and home favourite Shane Lowry are tidying up their opening rounds - but none of them will see it!

  12. Solid finish for Schefflerpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 17 July

Nice finish from Scottie Scheffler, finding a fairway then a green and hitting a nice long putt before tapping in for a par and a round of 68 - that's just one off the lead currently.

The world number one has been there or thereabouts in three of his four Opens so far and it looks like he'll be at the sharp end again, as he was far from his best today but is still T4.

  13. Postpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 17 July

    Aberg +2, Hovland -2, Spieth +2 (3)

All three tee shots fail to make the green on the par-three third, all in completely different spots - Ludvig Aberg short, Jordan Spieth long, Viktor Hovland right.

The trio give themselves chances to save par from inside 10 feet. Spieth does so, as does Hovland, but Aberg's effort from five feet misses and he drops back alongside Spieth at two over par.

An eventful start for this group!

  14. Great break for Rose!published at 15:51 British Summer Time 17 July

    DeChambeau E, MacIntyre -1, Rose E (3)

Wow, Justin Rose is a very lucky boy as he just leaked his tee shot on four out to the right and it's heading towards the out of bounds stakes, but takes a nice bounce back onto the course instead of skipping through into the bushes.

  16. 'Rory birdie creates noise at Portrush'published at 15:50 British Summer Time 17 July

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Royal Portrush

Oh yes! A bounce back birdie at the very first opportunity and you can hear what they think about it here at Portrush.

  17. McIlroy back levelpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy E, Fleetwood E, Thomas E (2)

Thunderous applause for Rory McIlroy at the second after he sinks a birdie putt.

Justin Thomas also sinks a birdie, but Tommy Fleetwood just hits the lip of the hole and has to settle for par.

  18. Rough is no jokepublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 17 July

You can get lucky of course, but if you stray off line at Royal Portrush then be prepared to face the music.

  20. McIlroy shows his skillspublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy +1, Thomas +1, Fleetwood E (1)

A difficult lie in the rough for Rory McIlroy as his his tee shot at the second leaves him with an unsighted iron on a steep gradient.

Photographers are stationed all around him but McIlroy is not remotely flustered.

He gets himself back on to the fairway before landing it plumb on the green with another iron shot to give himself a chance of a birdie.
