Summary

  1. 'McIlroy does well with approach'published at 15:20 British Summer Time 17 July

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

He's done well to get it all the way up there, it's left him an awkward shot but he's done well there.

  2. McIlroy out the roughpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy, Thomas, Fleetwood

Rory McIlroy looks a little pensive as he weighs how to approach things after a slightly wayward tee shot at the first. He makes decent contact out of the rough, taking some of the long grass out with his stroke, and is there or thereabouts

  3. Brilliant birdie for Schefflerpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry E, Morikawa +3, Scheffler -2 (16)

Shane Lowry safely navigates the tough 16th, but Scottie Scheffler plays an absolute stunner to knock his tee shot on Calamity Corner to just three feet for a brilliant birdie.

Just the fifth birdie on the 16th today and by far the best shot of the day here.

  4. Fitz trendingpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fitzpatrick -4 (67)

That 67 is the best first round at an Open of Matt Fitzpatrick's career - and it comes at the place where he secured his best finish, a tie for 20th at Portrush in 2019.

The 30-year-old only had one top 10 all season before three weeks ago but has an eighth and a fourth in his past two starts.

  5. Bogeys to startpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 17 July

    Aberg +1, Hovland E, Spieth +1 (1)

A three-putt from distance on the first hole means Jordan Spieth starts with a bogey.

Ludvig Aberg's tee shot dribbles into a bunker and he is unable to rescue the situation. A dropped shot for the Swede.

  6. Three parspublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 17 July

    DeChambeau, MacIntyre, Rose (1)

All pars for this star group for a nice steady start to the day. I'm really interested in Bryson DeChambeau in particular to see how he handles things today, as he's previously admitted he doesn't like the wind and the rain.

The reason? Well he's so precise and goes so deep into his numbers that he struggles to compute the equations sometimes when there are so many variants like the bounce on these fairways and the gusts of changing winds around the links.

    This will be a test.

  7. The fearsome first at Portrushpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 17 July

Hughie's: The first hole at Royal Portrush is a 420-yard par four.

There's no gentle loosener at Royal Portrush, as the first hole is a real test of nerve despite being just a 420-yard pretty straight par four.

Out of bounds white stakes on both sides will strike fear into our players, and that fairway will shrink considerably in their minds with nerves already heightened standing on the first tee of an Open Championship.

Keep it in play, and the second shot is no picnic either with a steep slope up to the green that will reject anything short and send the ball back down to be gobbled up by one of the deepest bunkers on the course.

Just ask Rory McIlroy about this one as he scored an eight (8!) here in 2019...

  8. 'Rory won't be too worried'published at 15:14 British Summer Time 17 July

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

I don't think he'll be too worried about that. Some nerves in there. He'll be ok with that.

  9. McIlroy starts his roundpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy, Thomas, Fleetwood (15:10 BST)

Rory McIlroy mouths a 'thank you' for the reception before driving his tee shot at the first into the edge of the rough on the left. Not the ideal start.

Tommy Fleetwood belts his tee shot right down the middle of the fairway.

  10. 'Spectators waiting in numbers for Rory'published at 15:12 British Summer Time 17 July

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Royal Portrush

This is an incredible scene - spectators are standing in places eight to ten deep.

They're all just waiting for the man of the moment to emerge on to that first tee.

  11. McIlroy on first teepublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy, Thomas, Fleetwood (15:10 BST)

Right, the wait is over. Rory McIlroy has just been introduced on to the first tee at Royal Portrush and was given a rapturous welcome by the crowd.

McIlroy is in a grouping with Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas of the USA.

    McIlroy (15:10 BST)

He was perhaps too hyped up to do well at a home Open, as Rory McIlroy had a complete nightmare on his very first hole here in 2019 when he ended up taking EIGHT (8) shots to complete the opening hole.

With adrenaline and nerves pumping through his veins, he pulled his tee shot wide left and out of bounds, before later having to take a drop for an unplayable lie and eventually having to put the dreaded snowman on his card.

And word on the street is he's struggled to keep it on the course from the first tee in practice this week as well. Anywhere in play will do just nicely for him today!

As crowds gathered for a glimpse of Rory McIlroy, standing room only felt like an appropriate phrase on the first tee..then one fan slipped down a bank after losing his footing during his efforts to find a better vantage point.

Have to applaud the dedication, though.

    Rahm -1, Schauffele +1, Spaun +1 (16)

A wayward tee shot costs JJ Spaun another shot and in double-quick time he's gone from one under to one over par.

Three straight bogeys now for Brooks Koepka, while Sam Burns drops in a short birdie putt to move back to one under par.

Rory McIlroy says he much better equipped now to deal with the inevitable hullaballoo which is going to be stoked even further because he comes here as the Masters champion.

He’s been here with the green jacket on and the excitement levels are beyond fever pitch.

A terrific round for Matt Fitzpatrick comes to an end as his birdie attempt misses left.

An eagle and three birdies, including that frankly ridiculous slam dunk out of the rough on 16, leave him four under for the tournament.

And in a share of the lead.

  18. Hat-trick for Sergiopublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 17 July

Sergio Garcia is flying in the early stages of his round as he's added a birdie on the seventh to ones on five and six to make it three in a row.

After two years of missing out he's obviously loving being back at The Open.

Sorry but there may be a good bit of chat about a certain Mr McIlroy this week - on and off the course.

The home favourite is EVERYWHERE at Royal Portrush, especially in the merchandise tent.

More title contenders are about to get their opening rounds under way - two players inside the world's top 11 plus a three-time major champion in this group.

Sweden's Ludvig Aberg is one of the game's most highly-rated players. He finished seventh at the Masters but missed cuts at the US PGA and US Open.

Norway's Viktor Hovland had a welcome return to form at the majors with a third-place finish at last month's US Open. In four previous Open appearances, he's finished in the top 15 three times.

Jordan Spieth won the 2017 Open win at Royal Birkdale, and although his results have not been as impressive as those early in his career, he always brings something decent to the Open - his lowest-ever finish in 11 appearances is a tie for 44th.
