A bit long from Lee Westwood off the 13th tee as he flies it over the green.

He knocks it back to within five feet and can still collect a par and stay top of the leaderboard.

it's probably more about survival in this weather.

Matt Fitzpatrick chipped nicely out of the bunker at the ninth to land on the green. He pulls up just a fraction short with a lengthy putt, though, and has to settle for par.

A decent first nine holes from the 30-year-old Englishman.

    Mickelson -1 (70)

Phil Mickelson, at 55 years young, has rolled back the years at times today.

He finishes with a two-putt from long range for par and he'll sign for a one-under-par 70 in the scorer's hut shortly.

One of his highlights was a bit of Mickelson magic on the third hole, when he somehow saved par by finding the cup from a greenside bunker.

Three birdies in four holes around the turn has vaulted Hoylake's Matthew Jordan up the leaderboard and suddenly he's only one shot back.

The English golfer holed out from just off the green on 10 before burying an eight-footer for birdie at the 11th.

He's on Lee Westwood and Jacob Skov Olesen's tail.

Some of the big names are starting to stir.

Two-time champion Padraig Harrington after his opening round: "I hyped up the opening tee shot as much as I could so when I got there, it wasn't so bad.

"I was decently comfortable when I got on the tee. I didn't try for too much. I got a little emotional as I was clapped on, then I calmed down and was fine when I was hitting it.

On the rest of his round: "I had three three-putts in the first seven holes and that just kills you. You're always questioning your pace over the the ball and your lines, and it was a tough day on the greens that just ate into my game.

"It might have been a little bit that I was hyped up on the tee box, but who knows?"

A dropped shot at the last for Jacob Skov Olesen but it's still a cracking round.

His bogey at the 18th though does allow Lee Westwood back into a share of the lead.

Phil Mickelson, the 2013 Open champion, gets himself back to one under with a 25-footer for birdie on the 17th.

One more hole to go for the American, who has put together a very nice opening round.

    Burns -1, Koepka -1, Potgieter +1 (7)

The par-five seventh measures 608 yards in this first round but Sam Burns has got to the green in two. A two-putt from 70-odd feet earns him a birdie.

Brooks Koepka is unfortunate as his third shot looks beautiful - until it drifts a few inches too far right and slides down the slope. So it'll be a par for the five-time major winner.

Jacob Skov Olesen might be leading The Open, but he's cutting a calm figure out here. After securing par on 17, he was hurled a bag of gummy sweets by his caddie as he lolloped up to the 18th tee. He could be out for a casual lash with his pals.

Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup is continuing that form of last week into today - a birdie on 12 takes the American to two under, three off the lead held by Jacob Skov Olesen.

  19. 'Rory made that shot a lot scarier'published at 12:00 British Summer Time 17 July

    McKibbin +1 (72)

Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin after his rollercoaster opening round: "It was OK. There was a little bit of everything. There was a little bit of good and little bit of bad.

"One over isn't great but it's not too bad. Overall I'm not too annoyed, but I'm not too happy either. It was an up-and-down sort of day."

On his nerves this morning: "Not too bad. Though Rory (McIlroy, when he hit his first tee shot out of bounds in 2019) has made that first shot a lot scarier. That's all I could think about for the past three days.

"I wasn't too nervous, I just didn't want to hit that bad a shot and I was very happy to get under way".

The sixth green is one of the great wee amphitheatres on this course. They all loved seeing that one drop.
