  1. Jordan goes three-underpublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 17 July

    Jordan -2, Jakubcik +2 T Olesen +1 (15)

Classy stuff from Matthew Jordan, who is really reading the greens quite well. He sinks a 10-yard putt for birdie. Jordan raises his ball and salutes the applause from the crowd at the 15th hole.

  2. Absolutely class from Schefflerpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 17 July

    Scheffler -2 (10)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Absolutely class from Scottie Scheffler. He launched it in the air out of the heavy wet rough on the left hand side to land it in the perfect position in the middle of this sliver of a green.

To get it as close to that as he did was fantastic.

  3. Birdie for Scottiepublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry -1, Morikawa +1, Scheffler -2 (10)

A third birdie of the day for Scottie Scheffler thanks to a stunning approach shot - and that's the way he has to go about making birdies as his putting is looking a bit ropey again - as shown on the last hole.

Really good par save on 10 from Shane Lowry that keeps him in red numbers to kick-off his back nine.

You never know how the conditions will change but the way he's played overall you suspect he'll have futher chances for birdie.

  4. Birdie for Fitzpatrickpublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fitzpatrick -3, Fox +4, Matsuyama +4 (12)

Matt Fitzpatrick rolls in nerve-jangling putt at the 12th.

The ball looks like it is going to hold up on a damp green, but has just enough purchase on it to drop into the hole.

  5. Early bird...published at 13:24 British Summer Time 17 July

    Li -4 (67)

While the bulk of the field plod around the sodden links, Li Haotong will already be up the road and enjoying his lunch with a four-under 67 scrawled on his scorecard.

The Chinese player got his work done before the real rain started to fall and serenely plotted his way round without a blemish. Where might he sit come the end of the day?

  6. A double bogey for Koepkapublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 17 July

    Burns E, Koepka +3, Potgieter +5 (11)

Brooks Koepka had to take a drop from the bushes down the right of the 11th and eventually takes six.

His round is in danger of really unravelling. He was still one under after eight holes but he's gone bogey-bogey-double bogey around the turn.

  7. 'Quite an awkward putt for Westwood'published at 13:21 British Summer Time 17 July

    Westwood -2 (16)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

It was a really awkward chip (for Westwood). It came over and just slowed up and it’s quite an awkward putt.

At this stage in the round it’s not really what you want to leave yourself.

Nice when they go in though Oli!

  8. Westwood saves par at 17published at 13:21 British Summer Time 17 July

    Westwood -2 (17)

Over at the 17th, Lee Westwood is standing over a niggly five-and-a-half footer to save his par and stem the bleeding of two bogeys in his past four holes.

Centre of the cup, he's downed it and that is a really useful settler before heading down the 18th.

  9. 'Hopefully see some magical golf today'published at 13:17 British Summer Time 17 July

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's the trials and tribulations what links golf and The Open championship can bring. You're going out there to the first tee, to hit the golf course and get off to a good start and you've got a nice smile on your face and then you get all the way round.

You've trudged your way round and you get down the 18th, two or three over.

You think you're out of it but there's a lot of to be played and we'll hopefully see magical golf today.

    Kaewkanjana -3 (6)

You've probably not heard too much about Thailand's Sadom Kaewkanjana but on his only other Open appearance he shot 65 on Sunday to finish T11 at St Andrews in 2022.

He won the Korea Open in May to qualify for Portrush and is making the very most of it as an eagle on the fifth sees him now sat in second place.

  11. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 17 July

    Rahm -1, Schauffele -1, Spaun -1 (10)

Jon Rahm finds himself in a similar spot to Brooks Koepka was a short while ago, off the back of the 10th green, although Rahm is in the longer grass so needs to chip rather than putt.

But the chip grabs in the wrong spot, rolls quickly down the slope and off the green once more.

That's a first dropped shot of the day for Rahm, who is now alongside his two playing partners on one under par.

  12. Koepka in troublepublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 17 July

    Koepka +1 (10)

Another Brooks Koepka tee shot flies right on the 11th and into some very thick-looking bushes.

There's a gaggle of about 10-15 people searching for it.

  13. Postpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 17 July

    Jordan -2 (14)

I've just reported that Lee Westwood has dropped a shot and so has fellow Englishman Matthew Jordan.

He can barely believe his ball doesn't drop either as it holds up right on the edge of the cup.

He drops back into the scrum of players at two under par.

  14. Westwood makes bogey at 16published at 13:09 British Summer Time 17 July

Damage limitation for Lee Westwood at the 16th after thumping his tee shot into the thick stuff.

He's very close to rescuing par from 55 feet but it comes up 60cm short.

Another bogey for the Englishman and he drops back.

  15. Bogeys for Scheffler & Lowry at the ninthpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 17 July

    Lowry -1, Morikawa +1, Scheffler -1 (9)

Scottie Scheffler has a good view of the pin as he chips on to the green at the 424-yard par-four ninth. The ball skids towards the hole which briefly excites the crowd, before dribblng up short.

However, the American misses a putt for par to bogey the hole.

It's a similar story for Shane Lowry as he too pushes a tricky putt for par just wide of the hole and mutters to himself after tapping in for a bogey.

  16. Dressed to impress?published at 13:06 British Summer Time 17 July

    Richard Winton
BBC Sport Scotland at Royal Portrush

It's always fascinating to observe what people are wearing at the golf.

There's the usual quotient of 'characters' in fancy dress. And those who've turned up looking like they're heading off to a night at the dancin'. A bold choice given the weather.

But loads seem to dress as golfers, some right down to wearing spikes.

What's the script with that? Has domineering golf club dress code etiqutte browbeaten them into it? Or do they maybe think Rory or Scottie or Bryson is going to hand them a club and ask them to have a lash?

    McIlroy (15:10 BST)

There are thousands of people and this is no exaggeration - about five to 10 deep around the green and around the fairway, standing on every hillock and hump they can to get a look at the 2019 champion Shane Lowry.

Imagine what it’s going to be like for Rory McIlroy later on.

  18. Postpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 17 July

    JS Olesen -4 (67)

This bit of short-game wizardry from leader Jacob Skov Olesen was a scorecard charger earlier on.

Delightful touch around the greens briefly got him to five under par.

He also holed 146 feet of putts, which is 40 feet more than anyone else in the early wave so far.

  19. Another bogey for Koepkapublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 17 July

    Burns E, Koepka +1, Potgieter +4 (10)

Brooks Koepka goes over the back of the green with his second shot on the 10th. The American chooses to putt but can't get down in two from there and it's a bogey for the five-time major winner.

Two bogeys in a row for Koepka.

  20. Fitzpatrick banks parpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 17 July

    Fitzpatrick -2, Fox +5, Matsuyama +5 (11)

Matt Fitzpatrick purses his lips after his second shot leaves him with in an awkward position at the 11th. However, a 40-yard chip on to the green allows him to bank par. He's keeping himself in contention.
