  1. 'I tried to hit that one underground'published at 13:02 British Summer Time 17 July

    Jonathan Bradley
    BBC Sport NI senior journalist

The early starters have been filtering through the mixed zone.

"Is that rain?" said Padraig Harrington (+4) as the Northern Irish weather began to loudly make itself heard on the roof of the tent.

Jason Day (+2) pondered a career change to weather man with his rationale being that there seems little consequence for getting things wrong.

Meanwhile, a two-under back nine at least allowed Cam Smith (+1) to see the funny side of an opening tee shot that didn't even reach the fairway.

"I think I tried to hit that one underground," laughed the Australian.

Dustin Johnson stepped onto the 18th hole at level par but sent his tee shot way right and had to reload.

It's eventually a double-bogey six to finish for two-time major winner Johnson, ending a round of 73 on a slightly sour note.

  4. Majestic birdie from Clarkepublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 17 July

    Clarke +4 (17)

Mammoth cheers from around the 17th green as the 'Prince of Darkness' himself Darren Clarke has just chipped in from no-man's land.

Great scenes as his face splits from ear to ear with a huge grin and the crowd go wild.

It's been a battle down this back nine but that was a lovely moment for the 2011 champ.

  5. Marquee trio under par at halfway markpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 17 July

    Rahm -2, Schauffele -1, Spaun -1 (9)

Xander Schauffele finds himself in the little gully to the right of the ninth green and plays a lovely chip to about four feet. It's a safe par and the defending champion plays his first nine holes in one under, as does recent US Open winner JJ Spaun.

Jon Rahm keeps up his 100% record for greens in regulation with a fine approach from the rough but his birdie putt pulls up short. The Spaniard is two under after nine, two behind the leaders.

  6. Postpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 17 July

    Westwood -3 (15)

Over to Calamity Corner and the 16th for Lee Westwood after safely navigating the 15th with a par.

Yuck he's grimacing. That's gone wildly right and will be buried in some grisly undergrowth down there.

This is a par three by the way.

The weather alert has returned to green. Which means the threat of an electrical storm has passed. For now.

It's also still hosing it down but not quite with the same intensity.

Sure the players would prefer those conditions today!

Just the one birdie on 13 so far on day one. Bunnet tip to Nicolai Hojgaard in the first group of the day.

Looking down from the tee, you can see why. Imagine being good enough that all that wasteland in the foreground is not a concern.

  10. Gotterup drops backpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 17 July

Last week's Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup was two under par after 12 holes but has bogeyed the next two holes to drop back to level par.

  11. Fitzpatrick saves parpublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 17 July

A slight miscue with his second shot leaves Matt Fitzpatrick with a lot to do on the 10th. However, he manages to chip himself on the green and then breathes a sigh of relief after he makes par.

New Zealander Ryan Fox manages to birdie the hole to clip one off his score.

  12. Bogeys for Brooks and Burnspublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 17 July

Not the best way for this group to finish their front nine as all three make bogey fives on the ninth.

Sam Burns finds a bunker off the tee and he has to play out sideways.

Brooks Koepka went right off the tee for the second hole in a row and managed to rescue a par on the eighth, but not on this occasion.

  14. Postpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 17 July

    Rahm -2, Schauffele -1, Spaun -1 (8)

Jon Rahm is eight out of eight for greens in regulation in his first round so far. He's managed to get a couple of birdie attempts to drop and if he can add a hot putter to that kind of approach play we've seen so far, then the Spaniard will be a huge contender to win this tournament.

His birdie effort on the eighth drifts just by the left edge of the cup and he joins Xander Schauffele and JJ Spaun in making par fours.

  15. Surprise bogey for Westwoodpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 17 July

Oh, where did that come from?

Previously so solid, Lee Westwood has just drifted a three-footer for par past the hole.

A first dropped shot of his round - and out of nowhere.

  16. 'Lowry usually a wizard around the greens'published at 12:31 British Summer Time 17 July

Not like Shane to make that kind of mistake.

He’s usually a wizard around the greens with a wedge.

It looks like he was put off a little bit – he kept looking at the crowd around him. Just didn’t get it up the hill and it trickled all the way back.

  17. Clarke strugglingpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 17 July

    Clarke +5 (16)

It's unravelling a touch for Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke as he comes down the back nine.

Four bogeys in his past seven holes, including at the infamous Calamity Corner.

He's now at five over par.

Here's him explaining the ideal way to play this brute.

Scottie Scheffler looks particularly miserable stood under a brolly at the edge of the green on the 608-yard par-five seventh.

The American chips neatly from a tricky lie on an incline then putts in for his second birdie of the day. That should cheer him up a little.

    Shane Lowry three-putts for par.
