Luke Donald becomes the second European captain after Tony Jacklin to win a Ryder Cup at home and away.

Only 37 European players have tasted victory away from home before this week. Now there are 47 names on that list, with Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose having featured at Medinah in 2012.

With one singles win today - Ludvig Aberg over Patrick Cantlay - it is the lowest total since 1957 (Great Britain W1 L7 H1).

It is also the total in the 12 singles match format. Albeit today there were only 11.

Chris: Fair play to the US team, they may have lost but they definitely went down swinging.

Paul: The team that played as a team win the team game. Get in Europe!

Pete: Arise, Sir Luke Donald, and Sir Rory McIlroy. Rory must be favourite for the BBC SPOTY after his achievements of this year

Michael: Not a huge golf fan but Ryder Cup is always fascinating. Day to day results show, in my opinion, that there was a team that was a superb team and one that was one of fantastic individuals. Team work brings results. Congratulations Europe, shame the noisy ones didn't stay! Etiquette!

Murray: What a finale! Well done to the Americans for making a fist of it (and saving their faces, to an extent). That was a lot more nervy than I thought it’d be. Amazing win for, against all the odds (well, at the start of the week anyway)!

Mary: An absolutely amazing Ryder Cup! Congratulations Europe! Every member of the team gave their all, a truly wonderful display of team spirit. Enjoy the celebrations, so deserved.

Joseph: The US a little too late.

Drew: From being a perfectly healthy individual I will be seeing my doctor tomorrow for checks on a potential heart condition which has developed in the last five hours.

William: When it’s close and the pressure’s on it gives the spectators something to really cheer their sides on. Nail biting is an understatement.

Andy: 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts' that was the difference in the end. Europe were the team but the USA individual performances nearly got there. Great performance from both teams but well done Europe.

"Two more years! Two more years!"

The chant that we heard in Rome is getting another outing.

Luke Donald shakes his head on the stage. At the moment, he will understandably feel he hasn’t got the energy for another stint - but who knows?

Interesting to see what he says later in his news conference.

  8. Rahm expands on Captain Donaldpublished at 23:26 BST 28 September

More from Europe's Jon Rahm: "Luke [Donald] has set the bar for captaincy so extremely high. What he's done these four years of being a part of, is absolutely astonishing.

"He has been so professional, so dedicated, so incredibly meticulous, and well organised and doing everything that he needs to do and that's why you've seen the two performances you've seen from us.

"He's the leader of the ship and he's definitely led us the right way. The only thing left to say from I think from all of us is two more years."

Look at the age profile of this team.

Everybody else has got stacks of years ahead of them.

It's going to have to be really special players forcing themselves into the European team going forward.

What they have is a strategy and a sense of continuity.

Luke Donald joins Tony Jacklin as the only European Ryder Cup captain to win home and away:

"It’s been the most stressful 12 hours of my life. Shout out to the Americans and Keegan, his captaincy. We knew they’d be tough, we didn’t think they’d be this tough on Sunday," he said.

"They fought so hard and all respect to them, but this means a lot obviously to me and the team.

"We came here knowing the task would be very difficult.

"I couldn’t have been more proud of these guys, what they’ve gone through, how they’ve come together, how they’re playing for history, how they’re playing for the people who came before them and now they’ll be talked (of) for generations to come that will go down in history."

Rory McIlroy was in tears four years ago at Whistling Strais after Europe's heavy defeat, but this time there were tears of joy.

"I'm extremely proud to be a part of this team, extremely proud of every single one," McIlroy said on Sky Sports.

"This was an unbelievable collective effort. As soon as we won in Rome we turned our attention to doing something everyone thought was pretty impossible, not just winning in America but here in New York."

The response from 2021 defeat: "The comments, what people were saying after Whistling Straits about this decades of dominance, we let that fuel us.

"We got so lucky in getting an incredible leader like Luke Donald, who shepherded us through this - so a lot of the credit has to go to him.

On the celebrations: "We did what we needed to do and we're going to celebrate like there's no tomorrow."

Shane Lowry is off again. He jogs up to the first tee, Ryder Cup in hand.

His 'calories burned' tally today must be absolutely herculean.

Wild prediction, but I predict he does some serious 'refuelling' this evening.

US captain Keegan Bradley, speaking to Sky Sports beside the 18th green: "They're a tough group. We didn't play our best the first couple days, but we did today. That was really fun today. We had all of our fun in one day here at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage.

"I think I would have set the course up a little different. But I don't know, they played better than us. They deserved to win. They're a great team. In my eyes, Luke Donald is the best European Ryder Cup captain of all time."

On being praised by Scottie Scheffler: "It means a lot to me. I really enjoyed doing this. I never thought I'd get to be a Ryder Cup captain. I'll never forget it. It was amazing.
