Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

    The US to go first.

Patrick Cantlay, down the slope. he can't run at this. Left to right. You wouldn't fancy this.

And he didn't. Runs it past.

Europe have a chance to go all square.

Luckily Robert MacIntyre is left handed or he'd be standing in the bunker.

Again, a fairly simple shot to a world-class player but he digs it out and it's three feet away.

The next four minutes are crucial.

Schauffele has got too much of that but it catches the slope and comes down.

    That is a daring shot!

    Xander Schauffele to play first.

He could hit this with his eyes closed and get it to three feet.

But this is the Ryder Cup.

It was sitting down a bit so he accelerates nicely through the ball and gets it to run back down the slope behind the hole. Four feet for four.

Similar result to Europe. Short, and the US will also have a straightforward chip up the green.

I say 'straightforward'. The eyes of the sporting world are on both these men.

Less dramatic than being in someone's lunchtime soup bowl, but Patrick Cantlay must play his approach from next to the hospitality units.

I'm guessing it bounced off the unit and into the rough.

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (14)

Viktor Hovland to play first, from 172 yards. Eight iron.

    Short.

On a grassy bank. Straightforward chip though.

    Woah!

What on EARTH was that, Xander Schauffele?

He pulled that straight left and it ends up in the hospitality. As in, I think that ended up in one of the units.

This is going to be fun.

Robert MacIntyre takes his driver out and looks down this 465-yard right-to-left dog-leg.

A few practise swings, and this sets up well for his natural fade from the left-hander.

Bold line that cuts off a bit of the dog-leg and it just reaches the first cut. Not fairway, but sitting nicely. And a long way down.

No problem for Viktor Hovland and on we got to the 15th tee.

Luke Donald fist bumps his men as they leave the green. Safe to say Europe's captain will follow this pair all the way in.

    No pressure, lads.

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (13)

Robert MacIntyre uses the Aimpoint system, where he works out the line by straddling the green between the ball and the hole.

He is doing it at various points here. He knows how big this is...

But no. A bit speedy perhaps, and it didn't take the break. And in fact it's no gimme so Viktor Hovland has 'one of those' coming back.

This would be a horrible way to lose a hole and all their momentum.

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (13)

Here comes Xander Schauffele. He has putted really well today. But that was an unlikely two. Solid three from the US.

Now Robert MacIntyre. A giant Scottish saltire flies in the background, at the back of the green. Will the boy from Oban be inspired and get this game back to all square?

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (13)

Now Patrick Cantlay. He must be feeling the heat because this pair know they are the US' only chance of something from the foursomes.

He fires that to the middle of the green and it screws back down the slope to 16 feet.

The US will be first to putt.

The pressure is mounting all the time on the Americans.

Viktor Hovland reaches for his wedge for this 149-yard short hole.

Waggle, waggle, waggle and then a beautiful draw to the left edge of the surface.

Robert MacIntyre will fancy dribbling that in for a two.

    Just unbelievable.

He rammed it into the middle of the hole and is striding after it.

Another hole won by Europe and on we go!

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (13)

Slow putt up the slope for Patrick Cantlay and you feel he knew that. He was so keen not to leave it short he bashed it three feet past. Europe will see that.

Now Vikor Hovland. This for the win.

    IN!

Two holes in a row for Europe - back to one down.

  18. Postpublished at 15:49 BST 26 September

    2UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (12)

Robert MacIntyre to pitch first. Past the flag and it digs in, sneaks back a couple of inches towards the hole. Makeable putt for four.

Xander Schauffele now. Tries to caress that but doesn't get his contact right and it's well short. Outside chance of a four.

Five-and-a-half holes for this man and Robert MacIntyre to turn it round.

Can they do it and make it a dream session for Europe?
