Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton saw off the challenge posed by American Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas in the foursomes to bank Europe's first point.

Rahm and Hatton had a few moments of fortune, though, en route to victory. Not least when Hatton found himself in the trees.

The Ryder Cup started with a raucous atmosphere with the USA receiving plenty of backing, and the Europeans a fair bit of stick.

Jon Rahm was the first to tee off for Europe in the foursomes earlier today and he did so with boos and jeers ringing in his ears.

Europe have gone on to win on the last six occasions they have led after day one in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2023.

The last time they were ahead at the end of day one and went on to lose was in 1999 (6-2 up lost 14½-13½)

This also represents their first lead in America after day one since 2004.

Some alternate facts of the day, all on the food front.

Apparently vendors expect to go through 150,000 hamburgers over the next few days, 9,000 lbs of fish and Long Island river shrimp, plus 67,000 Italian beef sausages and 10,000 salads.

And now for the more important ones...

  9. 'Grinded to win the session'published at 23:48 BST 26 September

Europe captain Luke Donald praised the way in which his players coped with a hostile crowd at Bethpage Black saying it was a feather in their caps "It's not easy out here. It's loud. You know, the crowd is certainly on the US side. But we have some crowd support, as well, which is fun.

"They are drying off that. What can I say? I'm so proud of these guys. They know how to handle that situation."

Assessing Europe's performance Donald added: "Incredible day. To win this morning was huge for us and we all know how important it is to get off to a good start.

"We know how strong the US were in foursomes. [So] 3-1 was a great start, and the top two, especially, they were such good momentum and inspiration for our boys. Again, guys grinded to win the session again this afternoon. That's another tick in our box, and I'm very happy where we are."

Rory McIlroy: 'It's a great day for Europe. We would have absolutely taken this last night if you had told us we would be 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 up.

"Obviously in the moment right now, I'm disappointed I didn't hole that for a full point but the guys have done so well today, and right now, it's just about recovering and resting up and getting ready for tomorrow."

Shane Lowry: "Obviously we are going to be very happy but we had this the first day in Rome. And Luke is a great captain.

"He's going to be going in and he's not going to be too excited. We've got a job to do, and we've got two tough days ahead of us.

"As you've seen, it was pretty rowdy out there this afternoon, and you know, it it's going to get like that over the next two days.

"I feel like we did a great job today. We would have loved to have won that point, but like Rory said, an amazing day for Europe, and yeah, we'll take it."

The European team just played really well. Putting was probably the difference. If you look at someone like Scottie Scheffler, and over four days you’d fancy he is going to come into his own. If he plays both matches tomorrow you fancy he’s going to do a lot better than he did today.

He played okay, he just didn’t hole anything.

The US rookies will be out in the morning a little bit more because they are tailor-made to the foursomes. They’re good ball strikers and they’ll be pumped and ready to try and get some points.

USA captain Keegan Bradley says his side are not out of the Ryder Cup despite trailing Europe by three points.

"The boys played really good this afternoon. Europe made a lot of putts. Happy with the way we're playing. Hopefully it'll turn and our putts will go in tomorrow," Bradley said.

"We've only played 28% of the points. This is first quarter. We've still got three quarters to go. I've got a lot of faith in my boys.".

USA's Cameron Young on his first Ryder Cup appearance on home soil: "It's pretty special. I love this place, and this is a team we worked really hard to make. We're just super grateful. To have the opportunity to play today alongside him [Justin Thomas] in front of these fans is pretty special."

American team-mate Justin Thomas added: "I really just kind of sat back and watched the show. I tried to help when I could, but I'm just so happy for Cam but I'm proud of him.

"Playing in your first Ryder Cup is really hard, but playing in front of your home fans I would imagine is even harder, but he definitely played like the veteran today. It's been fun watching his game progress, and I'm glad I got to sit alongside the show today."

World number one Scottie Scheffler after losing both matches on day one at the Ryder Cup: "We gave ourselves plenty of opportunities. It really just came down to me not holing enough putts.

"We put up a good fight at the end. The guys just really turned it on on the back nine, but it really came down to us not taking advantage of the holes early in the match that we needed to.

"Overall it was a good fight at the end, and we'll come back out tomorrow."

US Open champion but Ryder Cup rookie, JJ Spaun added:"Yeah, it was a battle. We played a really good team, and we kind of did all we could there on the back nine, but they just responded well.

"Unfortunately it just didn't go our way."

  16. Rahm 'can't take all the credit'published at 23:31 BST 26 September

    Rahm/Straka bt Scheffler/Spaun 3&2

Sepp Straka on beating Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun: "I struggled a lot all day. The putter still felt pretty good. I had a few firm putts early on but after talking to Jon about, it dialled in my speed a little bit and I made some good putts coming down the stretch. A bit ironic that I got to make the winning putt there because Jon played incredible."

His partner Jon Rahm added: I can't take all the credit. I've had really good partners. Tyrrell [Hatton] has been a fantastic partner, and having Nicolai [Hojgaard], as well on the front nine [in Rome] was incredible. Sepp has done his thing.

"We can't lose alone. It's a team. I've been fortunate to have really good team-mates.

"I think Sepp is selling himself short. There were certain moments out there that were key and he came up big when we needed him to. That putt on 14 was unbelievably huge. He can't sell himself short because he did the important stuff.

"Although it was great, it was just one part of a long race. We started great and we have to keep it going."

Bryson DeChambeau speaking after he and Ben Griffin lost in the fourballs to Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose: "Experience was great. 0-2 today, pretty disappointed. I played good golf, just not good enough, and they made everything. Luck is on their side right now.

"Hit my irons better and roll in a couple more putts. I felt like I was clutch when I needed to be, but the putt on 16, putt on 14, there were so many putts that just didn't go in for us that went in for them."
