Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

  1. Europe win!published at 15:44 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 5&3

And Matt Fitzpatrick only needs one!

Three matches in the bag for Europe. Incredible.

    2UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (12)

Poor drives off the 13th tee from both sides. Robert MacIntyre finds the left side of the course but it is trampled-down rough that Viktor Hovland has to play his shot from.

It is a bit of a schlaff in all honesty and there will be 100 yards or so for MacIntyre on that third to the par five.

Patrick Cantlay is on the opposite side with a great angle and a good lie but he lays up from 301 yards.

A pitching contest in the only match alive on the course.

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (14)

What can world number one Scottie Scheffler do? He's 24 feet from the hole and he sends his ball down the hill and just right.

Two putts for Europe to win the match.

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (14)

Back to the 15th and it's Russell Henley looking to revive something for the US. He finds the green from the rough but the ball sticks 24 feet away from the hole.

Time for Ludvig Aberg from the sand and it's good enough from the position he was in. A 12-foot putt coming for Matt Fitzpatrick.

  5. Postpublished at 15:37 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (14)

Matt Fitzpatrick goes from the long grass on the 15th and he's so unlucky! The ball bounces off the top of the hill to the green and trickles back into a bunker.

Still a chance for the US.

  6. Postpublished at 15:37 BST 26 September

    2UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (12)

Viktor Hovland was walking after that birdie putt before it was a foot from the hole.

In it goes and Europe get one back.

Two down is a LOT better than three.

  7. Europe win!published at 15:36 BST 26 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 5&4

Another point on the board for Europe as Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood continue their tremendous Ryder Cup run with a clinical victory.

It was an odd choice of Collin Morikawa and Harris English so we had this one down as favourite for Europe to win, but the way the point was delivered was just excellent.

The pair shot five under with no bogeys today - in foursomes that's an incredible return.

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (14)

Scottie Scheffler from the long grass. He gives it a good whack but can't reach the green and it's buried in the rough 34 yards from the hole.

What can Matt Fitzpatrick respond with?

  9. Europe win!published at 15:33 BST 26 September

    DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm 4&3

The first blue on the board from the opening match of the day and it's a brilliant 4&3 success for Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.

Keegan Bradley sent out Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas as his all-action hype men to rouse the crowd and rattle the Europeans, and they started in style.

Hatton and Rahm battled away though, and then once they'd settled they turned on the style and ran out comfortable winners in the end.

    3UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (11)

World-class approach from Robert MacIntyre and, after that error on the 11th, you imagine there was some anger in that.

He was in the right rough on the 12th and thumped his iron to eight feet. That would be a very welcome three for Europe.

  11. Dormie fivepublished at 15:30 BST 26 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 5UP (13)

Just a couple of pars on 13 but that's enough for the European pair to go dormie five - five holes ahead with five to play - and guaranteed a half point.

This pair will look to wrap this up quickly though as I suspect they'll both be playing this afternoon.

  12. Postpublished at 15:27 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (14)

Russell Henley with the driver out and it's horribly left into the crowd. Not what the US needed at all.

Ludvig Aberg can't take advantage of Henley's drive as he follows him left. Not ideal.

  13. Rubbish shot from Bryson...published at 15:25 BST 26 September

    DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm 3UP (14)

Bryson DeChambeau sprays his tee shot on 15 way off to the right, towards the grandstands and it lands just by a set of bins!

Luckily enough Justin Thomas gets a drop because the stand is stopping his backswing, so he has a clean shot to strike a long iron and find the green - he's way beyond the flag though so Bryson will have a slippery one down a big slope.

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (14)

Scottie Scheffler will be sick of the sight of Ludvig Aberg in Ryder Cups...

Last time in Rome Aberg teamed up with Viktor Hovland to hammer Scheffler and Brooks Koepka 9&7 - the biggest ever foursomes victory in the Ryder Cup - to reduce the world number one to tears.

And now he's dishing out another beating at Bethpage.

  15. Big swing for USpublished at 15:21 BST 26 September

    3UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (11)

Big error on the 11th green from Robert MacIntyre and it's now a long way back for Europe's final pair.

The US team were three feet away in three and MacIntyre had a 15-foot lag putt to put their opponents under pressure to make it for the half.

But the Scot clumsily knocks his effort past, Viktor Hovland misses the one coming back and Patrick Cantlay makes the US' putt to win a hole they looked like losing.

The US go three holes up.

  16. Postpublished at 15:20 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (13)

Russell Henley has arrived! He sinks the 31-foot putt to keep the US in this one.

Pressure is on Ludvig Aberg now and he walks it in. Relentless.

  17. Back to fivepublished at 15:18 BST 26 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 5UP (12)

A par is enough for Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy this time to win another hole and go back into a five-hole lead - with just six holes left to play.

So it looks like an early finish for these two, who may well be sent right back out this afternoon.

Watch how they went four up earlier on.

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (13)

Scottie Scheffler tees up on the par-three and it's vintage. Right in the middle of the green from the world number one. Still 31 feet to the hole, though.

Matt Fitzpatrick, take a bow! His 148 yard tee shot drops just over five foot from the pin.

    Have a bit of that.

  19. Great stuff!published at 15:15 BST 26 September

    DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm 3UP (14)

We had the first bit of bite back from the American crowd on the 14th tee after Justin Thomas got a bit from his own fans when backing off from his shot.

He hits a good one though and Bryson DeChambeau makes a birdie, with Thomas responding by trying to hype up the crowd and get them back on side.

But if you think that noise will stop Jon Rahm from matching the birdie then think again, as the big Spaniard is made for this and he knocks it in to keep Europe three ahead.

    Brilliant stuff all round.

  20. Postpublished at 15:14 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (12)

Ludvig Aberg with the third shot on the this massive par-five and he drops it 15 feet shy of the hole.

What about this from Russell Henley? He's 95 yards away from the green and lands it just 13 inches away from the hole. Incredible.

Scottie Scheffler drops in the US ball. Matt Fitzpatrick can't follow and the US bring a shot back.
