Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

  1. Two up!published at 14:48 BST 26 September

    DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm 2UP (12)

Wow! That's an absolute dagger from Tyrrell Hatton as he lands a bomb from 20 feet to double the lead for Europe in this crucial top match.

Europe are well ahead in two and behind in one so this one could be the decider in the session to see if Europe can take a lead.

  2. Solid halfpublished at 14:46 BST 26 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (10)

Solid par for the European pair here that only gives Collin Morikawa an outside chance with a long birdie putt and as you'd expect the odds are well against him.

It does indeed come up short so Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy just ensure there's no charge from the USA here and they stay four up.

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (8)

That will have looked SO good in the air from Viktor Hovland. But it's a foot shy of the green and settles in the fringe.

A hole-able chip for Robert MacIntyre coming up.

Patrick Cantlay fires a conservative approach to 15 feet. Unlikely birdie putt for Xander Schauffele coming up.

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (10)

No bother for Matt Fitzpatrick as he sinks the three-foot putt to halve the hole.

Europe inch closer to that first point.

  5. Postpublished at 14:42 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (10)

Russell Henley doesn't commit to the long putt and he leaves it five feet short for Scottie Scheffler - and he sinks it.

Ludvig Aberg completely misjudges the break of the green. The ball doesn't turn left at all but sits just three feet from the hole.

  6. Postpublished at 14:40 BST 26 September

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (8)

Xander Schauffele smacks one down the middle on the ninth.

Robert MacIntyre steps up and unleashes his own rocket, clearing the bunker at 310 yards and putting his partner in prime spot.

The top and bottom matches are as tight as you like. Middle two look safe for Europe.

The stand behind the 17th tee probably holds around a couple of hundred people. It’s packed. More in hope than expectation?

  8. Postpublished at 14:38 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (10)

Russell Henley's drive leaves Scottie Scheffler 155 yards to the hole with Europe further in front but in the rough to the right of the fairway.

Scheffler finds the green but 33 feet separates the ball and the hole.

Matt Fitzpatrick continues his fine form and he drops the ball 16 feet from the hole.

  9. Red back on scoreboardpublished at 14:35 BST 26 September

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (8)

The par-three eighth and it's a putting contest in the bottom match.

Both pairs are 16 feet away and it's Robert MacIntyre v Xander Schauffele with the wand in their hands.

Schauffele is a seriously good putter. Or rather, he used to be. Hasn't been so far in 2025.

But just when his country seriously needed him, he pours that in the front door.

Big moment - US go back ahead instantly.

  10. 'Can be no more gimmes'published at 14:34 BST 26 September

    DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm 1UP

You can see what kind of match this has turned into.

There can be no more gimmes now that we’re making the swing into the back nine.

That felt like a big moment on the 11th as Tyrrell Hatton had a mudball that saw his approach come up well short.

Bryson DeChambeau had 15 feet to draw level, and maybe pump some energy into the entire USA side out on the course (and the crowd!) but he can't convert and in the end makes Justin Thomas knock in a four footer just for the half.

They seem a bit flat still this top pair.

  12. Postpublished at 14:31 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (9)

Matt Fitzpatrick deals with the 57-foot putt well, allowing team-mate Ludvig Aberg the chance to hole it. America follow suit and the hole is halved.

    Europe won't mind that!

  13. USA pull one backpublished at 14:29 BST 26 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 4UP (9)

Well, it's been one-way traffic on that front nine but at least Collin Morikawa and Harris English manage to get their first hole of the day on the board to reduce the gap.

It's still a four-hole lead for this star European team though.

  14. It’s all gone quiet over herepublished at 14:28 BST 26 September

    Peter Scrivener
BBC Sport senior journalist at Bethpage

Fans are still flooding onto the course, checking out the big screens as they head to favoured spots. It’s not making for pretty reading. It’s feeling very subdued out here.

    Cantlay/Schauffele A/S Hovland/MacIntyre (7)

Robert MacIntyre can't convert for the three.

So gives Patrick Cantlay a chance to stay one up.

He's not the sort to get ruffled by much, is Cantlay. As we know.

But he misses! Europe win the seventh and that's the last bit of red wiped off the scoreboard.

  18. Postpublished at 14:25 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 4UP (9)

Russell Henley goes from the middle of the fairway and he gives Scottie Scheffler a decent putting chance on the green.

Now for Ludvig Aberg on this long par four. He also finds the green but leaves Matt Fitzpatrick a very long putt.

  19. Postpublished at 14:24 BST 26 September

    1UP Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (6)

Very nicely done by Xander Schauffele. A long bunker shot, the hardest shot in golf, and he clipped that off the top of the sand to eight feet.

Patrick Cantlay will likely need that to stay one up. If Europe misses their putt for three.

  20. Stats say...published at 14:24 BST 26 September

According to Data Golf, a statistical golf website which crunches all kinds of numbers, Collin Morikawa and Harris English ranked as the 132nd best pairing for this United States team - out of 132...

Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy ranked as the third best combination for Europe.

And up to now you have to say the stats were right.
