Europe take three-point lead on opening day of Ryder Cup

  1. Great escapepublished at 13:25 BST 26 September

    1UP DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm (5)

Bryson DeChambeau looks a bit cross when it's decided he has to play first, but he responds brilliantly with an approach that hits the green and settles just short, while Jon Rahm is in all sorts of bother.

But Rahm has those Spanish hands and despite being on a big downslope, in thick grass and with giggling American fans surrounding him, he produces an amazing escape to match DeChambeau's effort. Maybe even a spot closer.

  2. Best friends lead in match fourpublished at 13:23 BST 26 September

    1 Up Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (2)

Viktor Hovland could only make four.

So the door was left open for Patrick Cantlay and he makes no mistake to put the US up in the bottom match.

These two are best friends but haven't performed well as a team. Today would be a good time to put down a marker.

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 1UP (4)

Here's Scottie Scheffler on the fifth fairway. He's a long way back but it's no bother for the world number one as he drops it straight on the green for Russell Henley to go at.

Matt Fitzpatrick goes one better than Scheffler and leaves the ball a few feet from the hole.

Fitzpatrick has started this match in fine fashion!

    Cantlay/Schauffele A/S Hovland/MacIntyre (1)

Viktor Hovland puts Robert MacIntyre in a good position off the tee and the Scot hits a fine approach... but too much spin means it drags back into the fringe.

Hovland will likely putt that though.

Xander Schauffele is more cute with his approach and it spins back to pin high - the best shot we've seen on the second hole today.

    Another chance for the US.

  5. Solid from Rorypublished at 13:18 BST 26 September

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 1UP (3)

A loose chip from Tommy Fleetwood leaves Rory McIlroy seven feet to rescue the half, but the Grand Slam winner knocks it in perfectly to keep the lead.

I've always had McIlroy down as a somewhat streaky putter but his consistency has really improved in recent years.

It's tough to get a rhythm putting in foursomes as you may not have one for a few holes but then have to drain something like this - but Rory looks locked in today to me.

  6. Postpublished at 13:17 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 1UP (4)

Tee shots at the fifth. Russell Henley isn't the longest hitter in the world but he's efficient and he shows it there by nudging the ball into the middle of the fairway for Scottie Scheffler.

  8. Troublepublished at 13:15 BST 26 September

    1UP DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm (5)

Tyrrell Hatton with a bad pull off the sixth tee that's gone miles left and off into some sort of long grass wasteland.

American fans race into the jungle to try and find the ball, hopefully just to look and not touch, and they'll form a corden now which Jon Rahm will have to go and play from.

    This will not be easy...

Two hours ago, the New Yorkers were dancing in the dark to Springsteen and now they’re going to fill their hungry hearts.

The first tee grandstand empties as the fans head out onto the course to follow the four groups. Or off for breakfast.

Earlier I said beats and bass was a substitute for coffee and bacon. Now the music has stopped, sustenance is needed…

    Henley/Scheffler v Aberg/Fitzpatrick 1UP (4)

Matt Fitzpatrick lines up a putt for eagle. It's a great effort but drifts inches wide of the hole.

A mistake from Russell Henley leaves Ludvig Aberg with an easy putt to give Europe the lead in the match. Of course, he obliges.

  11. Half for Hattonpublished at 13:12 BST 26 September

    1UP DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm (5)

Bryson DeChambeau can't convert a chance for the win from 13 feet, but Jon Rahm has left his partner a tester from four feet and Tyrrell Hatton takes his time - but drains it superbly.

Hatton's become such a solid player over the last couple of years, and he could have a big week here.

  12. All square in bottom matchpublished at 13:09 BST 26 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele A/S Hovland/MacIntyre (1)

Robert MacIntyre nudges his effort hole side. A four for Europe.

But you feel Xander Schauffele will drop this in the front door for a US win.

    No!

Big let-off for Europe. He tried to thump that in the back and pulled it. It was almost not a gimme, he hit it so far past. All square after the first.

  13. Postpublished at 13:08 BST 26 September

    Henley/Scheffler A/S Aberg/Fitzpatrick (4)

Ludvig Aberg picks up after a lovely drive from Matt Fitzpatrick and he leaves his team-mate with a great chance to eagle.

Danger for USA as Scottie Scheffler sets up in a bunker. His shot isn't bad but it's advantage Europe in match two.

    English/Morikawa v Fleetwood/McIlroy 1UP (2)

Hole halved in four at the second when neither team could convert from around 16-20 feet away - no fireworks on this one but Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood keep their advantage.

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (12:58 BST)

Great lie but bad angle for Viktor Hovland. He pitches it to 15 feet, but on the lower tier. That looks like a two-putt for Europe.

Now Patrick Cantlay, from the perfect angle. He plays a classy chip and run to eight feet and that is advantage USA on the first.

    1UP DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm (4)

Tyrrell Hatton not happy at all with his approach shot to the fifth, and lets us all know with a few choice expletives. A reminder to not watch Hatton play with your kids.

Could you hit a tee shot under this pressure?

  19. Match four under waypublished at 13:01 BST 26 September

    Cantlay/Schauffele v Hovland/MacIntyre (12:58 BST)

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre steps forward for Europe.

He didn't play a foursomes match in 2023 and is heckled just before he takes the club back but he nudges it down there, into the rough but sitting up nicely.

Xander Schauffele puts his partner in prime position.

This has the feel of a very tight match.

Tyrrell Hatton fails to drain his putt from a mile away on the fourth, so thanks to that stunning Justin Thomas shot the USA remain one up.
