Bryson DeChambeau gets the advantage of silence as he loads up before unleashing a monster of a drive high up and over the trees, cutting the corner of the first and dropping just short of the green.

    Great shot!

    DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm (12:10 BST)

Not quite the best of order from the fans with some whistles and shouts as Jon Rahm was trying to hit his drive, and he's gone wide right off the first tee.

    Bryson DeChambeau up next.

Some wry smiles from Rahm and Hatton as their names get announced to yet more boos.

Rahm it is who will hit the first tee shot of the 45th Ryder Cup. I can feel my heart beating here so how he'll manage to even make contact here is beyond me...

  4. Rory who?published at 12:10 BST 26 September

Rory McIlroy is getting booed without being on the first tee. He’s on the driving range and his face appears a big screen to the right of the first tee.

They’ve been loving him and demanding autographs and selfies all week. It’s now game day.

'Oh Bryson DeChambeau' to the tune of Seven Nation Army starts off - but fizzles out…

… but here come the players and the noise goes up a notch.

  5. Feel the noise!published at 12:09 BST 26 September

    DeChambeau/Thomas v Hatton/Rahm (12:10 BST)

Wow! Some noise on the first tee - huge reception for Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas and a massive chorus of boos for Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.

    Let the Ryder Cup begin!

What a start we've got with four of the most fiery guys around first up today.

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton went 2-0 in foursomes in Rome, and Rahm overall has a perfect 4-0 Ryder Cup record in this format.

Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas form a new partnership, but with Bryson's length off the tee and Thomas' iron play they look a perfect match.

They also love to get the crowd hyped up too. This will be a loud start to the Ryder Cup.

You know that the last away win in the Ryder Cup was 2012, right? And it was an absolute classic. Take a look just ahead of the 2025 edition.

You know what they say about New York, if you can make it there...

Only 37 European players have ever tasted an away victory in the Ryder Cup, can Luke Donald's mem etch their names into golfing immortality this week?

On their side, experience. Donald himself along with Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy helped produce the 'Miracle of Medinah', the greatest golfing comeback ever seen, so can they provide that secret sauce for another?

Against them, a young, hungry American team. Inexperienced, yes, but seemingly more together than ever and with possibly the most ferocious and partizan home crowd we've even seen in the event, powered by those fiery New Yorkers.

Europe triumphed in Rome last time, but this is the true lions den, no golfers will have faced what these 12 men in blue will go through this week.

This is more about strength of character then swing speed, testing your mettle more than Iron play and patience more than putting.

    Bring. It. On

The music has stopped and now we have a new cheerleader.

    It’s Keegan Bradley.

Huge cheers as the US captain - who went to college on Long Island and used to sneak onto play Bethpage Black - strides out on to the first tee.

He cups his ears and demands more noise. The home fans oblige and then launch into boos.

Any guesses why? Yep, here is Luke Donald and his vice-captains.

Still lulls of quiet, though. This sprawling grandstand - stretched across the first tee and 18th green - lacks the ferocity of the horseshoe stand at recent Ryder Cups.

  13. Home field advantage?published at 12:02 BST 26 September

Here are the score on the doors from the previous 10 editions of the Ryder Cup. Not much red on the board there.

Europe have won seven of these last 10, but perhaps more relevant is that eight have been won by the home side. Those two away wins have both been for Europe though...

    • 2023 - Europe 16½ - 11½ US
    • 2021 - US 19 - 9 Europe
    • 2018 - Europe 17½ -10½ US
    • 2016 - US 17 - 11 Europe
    • 2014 - Europe 16½ - 11½ US
    • 2012 - US 13½ - 14½ Europe
    • 2010 - Europe 14½ - 13½ US
    • 2008 - US 16½ - 11½ Europe
    • 2006 - Europe 18½ - 9½ US

  15. Donald's formidable recordpublished at 11:57 BST 26 September

    Luke DonaldImage source, Getty Images

Luke Donald has won every single Ryder Cup he has featured in as a player (2004, 2006, 2010, 2012) and as a captain (2023).

As a player, he also collected 10½ points out of a possible 15 (70%), the best scoring ratio among any European to have taken part in at least three editions of the biennial contest against the United States.

Donald, who is the first repeat skipper for Europe since Bernard Gallacher in the 1990s (1991-95) is also aiming to become the first European captain since Jose María Olazabal in 2012 to win a Ryder Cup on US soil.

  16. Will Bryson bring out the driver?published at 11:56 BST 26 September

    Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport golf news reporter at Bethpage Black

With the MC not able to stir the crowd into song, I know a guy who will get the fans roaring soon enough.

Bryson DeChambeau. Especially if he pulls the driver out.

DeChambeau has been cracking out the big dog on the range and won’t be afraid to launch his opening drive towards the first green if the wind is behind him.

That will be the Ryder Cup equivalent of Oasis starting their comeback sets with Hello. Tone set.

"It's 365 yards, something like that. That's nothing, right? Just a normal long drive shot," he said yesterday.

There isn’t much wind to help him on a still Long Island morning, while overnight rain means the front of the green will be soft and will take the legs out of the ball.

"This is Bryson's arena. If he views himself as a gladiator golfer, this is as good as it gets," Bryson DeChambeau's team-mate Xander Schaffeule said.

DeChambeau - two-time US Open champion, audience-attracting YouTuber and MAGA-loving ally of President Donald Trump - has morphed into a talisman for the American team.

It is a remarkable turnaround for a player who did not make the US team two years in Rome.

  18. Bethpage used to queuespublished at 11:55 BST 26 September

    Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport golf news reporter at Bethpage Black

It isn’t unusual to see golfers gathering at Bethpage in the dark.

This is a municipal course on a New York State Park, meaning members of public can turn up and play.

But, as Bethpage course superintendent Andrew Wilson told me earlier this week, they have to join a queue and be prepared to wait.

Earlier this summer, punters were camping out for 48 hours to get a chance to play the infamous Black course where the stars will battle for the Ryder Cup.

  19. Donald makes mischief?published at 11:55 BST 26 September

    Luke DonaldImage source, Getty Images

Now then, is this a bit of mischief from Europe's captain Luke Donald...?

The Englishman reckons home fans could turn on the United States players if they don't start well because unlike their European counterparts that are being paid to play.

"We all know how high the ticket prices are, and it's going to be an expensive trip out for a family of four. If the US players are getting paid a stipend, or whatever it is, and they aren't performing, the New Yorkers could make them know about it," said the former world number one.

The US players and captain will each receive $500,000 this week - $300,000 of which must be donated to charity. Team Europe will not get a personal financial rewards.

"When I first heard about it, I reached out to all the 12 guys from Rome to see how they felt," Donald said. "Everyone was like: 'We haven't even considered playing for money for that event.'

"We understand what it represents. We have a great purpose and that's really enough for us."
