    If the World Cup throws up goals of a similar standard, it will certainly be worth watching.

    West Bromwich Albion chairman Jeremy Peace hopes the club will significantly improve the way it recruits players this summer after the toughest season he can remember.

    The managerless side finished 17th in the Premier League and parted company with two managers during the season.

    In a statement Peace says, external the previous campaign "underlined the strides we still need to make" in player recruitment and hopes to "de-risk the signing of new players".

    Thomas Bjorn shot a course record 62 on day one of golf's PGA Championship on Thursday. The Dane was flawless at Wentworth and on 10 under, holds a two-shot lead from Ireland's Shane Lowry.

    Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson and Martin Kaymer are all well positioned four shots further back, while Ian Poulter - who went into the tournament suffering muscle spasms - did some thorough warm-up exercises and carded two under.

    Newcastle defender Paul Dummett has received online death threats from Uruguay fans who blame him for the knee injury sustained by Luis Suarez.

    The 22-year-old was sent off for a challenge on Suarez when his side met Liverpool at Anfield on the final day of the season.

    Suarez has undergone surgery and faces a race to be fit for his country's World Cup opener against Costa Rica in Fortaleza on 14 June.

    Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is back in training after undergoing horse-placenta treatment on a hamstring tear as he bids to be ready for Saturday's Champions League final against Real Madrid.

    Costa, 25, suffered the injury during his side's Spanish league title-winning draw with Barcelona last weekend, but both he and midfielder Arda Turan - who has also overcome a knock to train - will fly to Lisbon for the final.

    Nico Roseberg agrees a contract extension of at least two years with Mercedes.

    The 28-year-old, who partners Lewis Hamilton for the German manufacturer, was out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

    Rosberg won the opening race of the season and will be staying put next year, despite comments from Mercedes' chairman Dieter Zetsche which praised Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso earlier this week.

    So Uruguay holds its breath. Luis Suarez emerged from hospital on Thursday to a mass of media and supporters armed with camera phones.

    "Thank you very much for the messages of support, love and encouragement throughout the day," Suarez writes on Facebook. "The strength that my loved ones give me will make me work hard to reach the World Cup. My family and I are very grateful to all of you!!"

    An operation to repair a knee injury causing Suarez "intense pain" will hamper his World Cup preparations, but the Liverpool forward could be fit for the tournament - which starts for Uruguay on 14 June.
