And some other sporting anniversaries from this day...

1954: Warrington and Halifax played in front of rugby league's biggest ever crowd when 102,569 attended their Challenge Cup final replay at Odsal.

1973: Sunderland beat Leeds to win the FA Cup against all odds, Ian Porterfield scoring the only goal of the game and goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery producing a stunning second-half save.

2009: Man United defeated Arsenal 3-1, completing a 4-1 aggregate win, to earn Sir Alex Ferguson's side a place in the Champions League final ... though they were beaten 2-0 by Barcelona.

2014: Mark Selby completed a come-from-behind victory to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 18-14 in the World Snooker Championship final at the Crucible, the first time five-time champion O'Sullivan had lost in the final.

What have these got in common ... Trotsky was exiled from the Soviet Union, Charles Lindbergh was presented with the Medal of Honour for the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic, and British inventor John Logie Baird demonstrated the world's first colour television transmission?

Answer, they all happened in 1928.

As did, on this very day, this.

Legendary Everton striker Dixie Dean - pictured in white - broke the record for the most goals in a season, beating George Camsell's 59.

Dean needed a hat-trick on the final day of the season to better Camsell's mark - and, in a sure sign of greatness, duly struck a treble in the Toffees' 3-3 draw with Arsenal at Goodison Park. Legend.

So, farewell to Jonathan Trott, a man who, for a few years, was one of the best batsman England have had.

The 34-year-old returned to the Test side for the tour of the West Indies, 18 months after leaving the Ashes tour with a stress-related illness, but managed only 72 runs in six innings.

As a result he's announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, saying, with admirable honesty: "This is a tough decision but I don't feel my game is at the level needed to play for England."

The Warwickshire player - who will continue to play county cricket, scored 3,835 runs in 52 Tests - including a century on his debut in the 2009 Ashes decider.

Arsenal moved level on points with second-placed Manchester City and heightened Hull's relegation worries with a superb display at KC Stadium.

The Gunners were sensational in the first half when Alexis Sanchez, twice, and Aaron Ramsey put the Gunners 3-0 ahead.

A Stephen Quinn's header after the break gave Hull hope but they never truly looked like getting back in it.

"One thing we wanted to do in the second half was to make sure it was not one of those ridiculously horrible evenings," said Tigers boss Steve Bruce, whose expression below kind of sums up the night.

Defeat saw Hull slip to fourth-bottom, one point above the relegation zone. They play Burnley on Saturday - talk about a big game.

Bit of breaking news. Warrington have signed former Australian international Kurt Gidley, his NRL club has announced

The 32-year-old Newcastle Knights captain, who won 12 caps for the Kangaroos from 2007-13, will join the Wolves on a 12-month deal at the end of the year, with an option of a second season with the Super League club.

Here's one for the family album (though should that lad really be allowed on the table ... oh go on then, given the occasion we'll let him off this time).

"To beat Shaun in the final tops everything off," said a delighted Bingham. "Twenty years as professional - blood, sweat and tears on the road. Qualifying in places like Prestatyn and Malvern.

"So many family and friends have backed me. It is unbelievable."

    Well done that man.

  8. Who's got no bottle now?published at 08:07 British Summer Time 5 May 2015

Stuart Bingham - who seems an awfully likeable chap - will awake this morning (possibly with a sore head and needing to pop an Alka-Seltzer or two) in the knowledge that he has become the oldest first-time snooker world champion since 1978.

Back then, Ray Reardon won the title aged 45. Bingham, 38, held off Shaun Murphy to win 18-15 in a terrific final at the Crucible.

And afterwards he claimed a remark from fellow player Mark Allen, who claimed Bingham had no bottle, spurred him on to success.

"Since then things have changed," said Bingham, who is £300,000 richer today.

Take a bow Stuart Bingham, the new world snooker champion. Well done Arsenal, on course for a top two finish (though worrying times for Hull). And farewell Jonathan Trott, who has called time on his England career.

More on all three stories coming up.

Now here's a story we didn't expect. According to The Mirror, Chelsea are weighing up a summer move for Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert. Yes, you read that correctly. Jose Mourinho, apparently, sees Lambert as a replacement for Didier Drogba. We'll wait with bated breath to see whether that one happens...

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has risked upsetting his old boss Arsene Wenger by claiming new gaffer Jose Mourinho is "the best" manager around. Well, he was hardly going to say it is Wenger given who's paying his wages, is he?

All cricket in the Daily Telegraph with Jonathan Trott's retirement from the international scene dominating. The batsman - who fought back after his problems on England's Ashes tour in 2013 - has decided to step down after a wretched tour of West Indies, where he scored 72 runs in six innings.

John Carver gets the nod from the Newcastle board to carry on until the end of the season - despite results and his controversial comments about defender Mike Williamson getting deliberately sent off (a claim Williamson denied). There's also a bit on Arsenal's win, and Jonathan Trott's England retirement.
